Afaik it cannot be a switchblade. Also pandai2 lah yeah, be prepared to have it taken for no reason. By and large if you're not doing anything wrong nothing will happen to you.

Law is subjective.

Basically its up to the police see if they like your face.

survival kit, very useful too. a 13 in 1, can open tin can, and etc etc. in-case of emergency, it's matter of death or life. because laws of Malaysia kind of blur, Malaysia Act. because i saw a news, peoples caught by police after 6pm carry a similar kind of survival kit at road check confused.gif

Been carrying swiss army knife in my pocket for many years, so far nothing. Of course cannot bring to certain area that prohibit knife/sharp object.

Switchblade I believe is illegal.

legal until police cari pasal with you...
my friend have those mini key chain swiss army knife drove in backlane that was one way as he didnt know. then kena police stop and say he was drunk and ask for kopi money... bising bising, then 1 sargent came over ask to check car for weapons and drugs.

Ended up went to balai do alcohol test which nothing detected but kena tahan whole sunday cause got sharp weapon. End up pay Rm500 to settle and he walk free after that, or wait till Monday go court. Maybe kena kelentong by sargent for RM500.

Not just swiss army knife, what about foldable knife (4" blade, 8" full), machete or axe?

People do carry these around for convenience.

Dunno about foldable knives, but machetes and axes are ok as long as one can justify the presence of such tools. I carry them in my trucks all the time. One of the routes I travel has the occasional landslide which brings some earth and small trees onto the road. Once at a police roadblock, I was asked "Kenapa simpan parang dlm kereta?", I politely told the cop that it was in case of minor tree blockages dan aku tak nak berjanggut tunggu JKR datang potong pokok. The cop smiled and waved me on. A friend of mine who also travels the same route sarcastically told the cops at the roadblock, "Kalau takde parang, u mau I pakai gigi ke?". He related the incident to me about a week after his visit to the balai. biggrin.gif The way we explain ourselves is rather important.
