I think unless someone is in the furniture business most wont know about laminates or where to buy it...

I've asked the gents where I bought my furniture from and they advised laminates comes in several form one being the paper laminate (cheap stuff), wood laminate and those plastic laminates.

They also said outside of furniture factories and contractors the stuff is hard to come by for consumers coz its usually sold in bulk to industries.

It's also possible you can try to contact rezzz see my siggy basically he was selling those carbon fiber stickers that you could use as a laminate maybe he can source for the wood grain design you're looking for. Or you could go modern and carbon fiber everything brows.gif

Well since this thread is about furniture and appliance reviews I would like to write a short review on a furniture shop I had the pleasure of patronizing recently its called Grand Teak S/B it's located in a row of shop lots behind Tesco Puchong next to Angel Veterinary.

http://www.grandteak.com/images/product_mis_2_07.gif

The furniture they typically feature is made of hard woods like Mahogany and Teak. In addition to hardwood furniture they also have seagrass furniture and various knick knacks like table lamp shades, wood statues and other misc. ornamental decorations.

I stumbled on them by accident whilst I was surveying the furniture shops along the Puchong stretch of the LDP highway. They are located somewhat far from the main road and tucked away in a bunch of nondescript shops.

I was greeted by their staff Munif who is very attentive and gone to lengths to explain and promote their products. Its great coz you also get to chat and at the same time haggle for price reductions alto several items are already too low for discounts and I agree whistling.gif

I've purchased several pieces furniture from them including this lovely wub.gif Teak 4 Poster King size bed

A 6'ft Mahogany TV Cabinet with 6 Drawers and huge cast iron handles.

user posted image

2 Feng Shui Mirrors

user posted image

The mirrors are a bargain I got them at RM88 a piece and its only RM68 for smaller 60'x70' mirrors.

Visit their website http://www.grandteak.com for pictures of their products.

I recommend you visit their shop coz the pictures don't do justice to the products in real life, their shop also has some one-off pieces not shown online.

BTW they're having a clearance sale till end of this month (March) so if you love rustic wooden furniture or just can't stand the crap furniture from Ikea pay Grand Teak S/B a visit.

PS: jootat try this attachment...

ic ... 2K for a bedroom set to u is consider expensive? hmm .. i can't give any comments though ... coz i also don have any exp. But do u mind to snap some photos so that we can roughly know whether is it worth it ?

Yalor 2K is quite cheap but then he din say what's included... or the materials used!

It's a good idea to measure your rooms first before going out to buy big pieces like wardrobe, bed and dinner tables.

Take your time to learn subtle points of selecting good furniture and how each piece will fit into the room or if it's too big icon_idea.gif

The materials used also determine the quality and price of a particular piece.

There is a big price difference between high density fibre board, ply wood, rubber wood, nyatoh, mahogany, metal etc.

Also there are so many different kinds or fabric, leather, synthetics, and there are also regular glass and tempered glass.

My recent tip is there is 2 different types of marble used to make dinner tables. Treated marble and natural marble... treated being cheaper (depends) and looks very attractive and natural depends on each piece no two are the same.

But if you chip away the surface of treated marble the colour is different. I've seen a very reddish marble table but chip the surface underneath its actually white and natural marble if chipped the colour is consistent underneath you can polish natural marble and its good as new! thumbup.gif

Tempered is heat treated glasses, basically they heat the glass under high temperature to strengthen it so it's not fragile and easily breakable! Your car windshield is made of similar stuff!

Its also safer coz when it breaks the pieces is small and not as sharp or likely to cut as regular non-tempered glass!

Taken from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toughened_glass

Toughened glass or tempered glass is a type of glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter into small fragments when broken.

Toughened glass is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations, such as in microwavable see-through cookware. Other forms of tempered glass are Borosilicate glass for baking by Pyrex and Arcuisine, ceramic-glass dinnerware by Corelle and Arcopal and bakeware and stovetop pots by Arcoflam. Within the home, tempered glass can be found in display case windows, shower doors, glass patio doors, glass dinnerware and drinking glasses. In commercial structures, tempered glass is used for unframed assemblies such as frameless doors, structurally loaded applications and any that would be dangerous in the case of a human impact.

anybody heard bout Heng Lee Electrical @ Bandar Puteri Puchong...their price seems cheaper than those senq. Hows their reputation?
*
Are they the shop on the same row as Standard Chartered bank...

For me I purchased several of my electrical stuff from HomeNet they're on the same row as Citibank... purchased my water heater and ceiling fans from there but be prepared to bargain.

edit: Scratch that I don't think I would recommend Homenet either... sweat.gif one reason was I earlier got an agreement to purchase my appliances they aren't going to charge me the 3% credit card fee.

Later when it comes time to pay the taukeh change him mind... luckily after raising a protest he change back :bleh:

im not sure where it is but from da map in newspaper which advertise mostly on Friday. it's a corner shoplot
*
Yup I know that shop... and the advert you're referring to. Honestly I didn't like going there...

What they advertise is not what you're getting... for example they advertised Zanussi Oven/Hob for RM900 (can't remember exact sum) when we showed up to inquire they told us it's only for 1 unit, the display set...

It's the same with the Aircon's as well all also display set... their advert doesn't mention their sale items is mostly display sets. Go there but be prepared for some disappointment.

I didn't buy anything because I felt they were dishonest shakehead.gif

Well I couldn't be bothered with Cavenzi or Ikea, most furniture nowadays are crap... so easy to damage even sofas that cost RM2k within a week can tear...

I tore my best friend's leather sofa within the first week coz the stitching was badly done if anyone sat on the sofa it would strain the leather. In the end the whole thing tore open. shakehead.gif the look on my friends face icon_question.gif

It's the same with Ikea Grom storage shelves. The joints are easy to snap, I store a box (half empty on purpose) and it breaks.

I can't seem to find any proper forum on user experience or review of electrical appliances in Malaysia...

Coz I was planning on getting a new washing machine and I wanted to know if those really expensive Bosch or Maytag washing machines does the job better than a sub RM1k machine from Panasonic or Samsung?

Anyone care to share their laundry experience, desperately need a washing machine coz my weekly laundry bill cost RM25+ a week excluding family members.

PS: If anyone is interested I've shopped around and asked the price for this model Samsung WA98UA 7.8kg

RRP is RM999
Best Denki RM950
Harvey Norman RM979
HSL RM985 - So stingy RM4 discount onli

where can i find 2nd hand appliances shop in PJ area?
*
Hmmm let me think there is Cash Converters... cant think of any others.

Personally I'm not too keen on second hand appliance, I'm OK with furniture but appliance can be troublesome esp when they breakdown shortly after purchase.

Bits like motor, drum etc could be end of life or difficult to replace IMHO.

sorry if i'm too late, i've just bought Samsung washing machine for my hse, forgot the model but it's 7.5kg, price at RM800++ with 5% discount..  Actually i found it not so good, not because it gave me problems, but sometime during washing, it will generate some knocking sound.. i felt the machine will not last long...(TOUCHWOOD!) btw, it's top load.
*
Thanks for replying I appreciate it. Already purchased a samsung but a much cheaper model...for 7kg its OK no problems so far...

I choose a model without the Nano Silver because I felt it was just marketing or gimmick tongue.gif

The knocking sound check if the machine is level... because the drum when spinning could be hitting the inside of the machine... if its level and there is still sound better get it checked out...

QUOTE(adrianocy @ Feb 21 2008, 01:20 AM)
is it solely branding?
*
Besides brands there are the different types of hobs...

Electric or Gas.
- Depends on your preference... my friend cooks with gas but has an electric stove for backup.
- Gas is cheaper to run I'm told (but I don't have the numbers to prove it)

The number of burners you need (2, 3 or maybe 6)

The cooking stand is important flat for pots and pans or slightly raised for asian woks.
- Check that your pans are stable.

Types of hobs
- Stand alone (cheap)
- built-in (expensive or cheap depending on brand)
- or those that come with ovens.

For built in hobs you must check what materials are used to construct its top:-
- stainless steel
user posted image

- tempered glass
user posted image

- or those plastic covered aluminium types hmm.gif dunno what to call it...

No pics sorry... tongue.gif
