They cannot keep track of the serial number of each unit they installed.Some users might have reported problem and the technician might have changed it.
You return a spoilt unit, they also don't know. They just account what items you return to them. Don't think they power up every item to check if it is working. They just chuck them in a corner.
They just want to make life miserable for us.
