Currently targeting canon S3is, or Olympus 550uz. Just want to take good quality pictures & night shots & moving objects.

canon s3is

pro: 1: Image appears more sharper & detailed compared to olympus 550uz.

2: Macro only 0cm

3: Ultra sonic motor can zoom during movie recording.

4: Made in Japan (correct me if im wrong)

5: Software function more easy

6: USB 2.0 high speed support

7: uses SD cards.

8: cheaper by a few hundred

Cons:1: Only ISO 800 max

2: 12X optical zoom compared to olympus 18X.

3: Heavier than 550uz

4: A bit red eye

5: no wide lens only 36mm.

Olympus 55uz

pros: 1: 18X optical zoom ( i think thats their main selling point.)

2: 15 Frames per sec shooting

3: iso max is 5000

4: Dual image stabilization.

5: 28mm wide lens.

cons: 1: Colour & detail of picture not as good as canon.

2: No optical zoom during movie recording. Can if u turn off sound

3: More EXPENSIVE

4: uses xd-card- more expensive

5: NO usb 2.0 high speed support

6: Made in Indonesia

oh well.. anyway S3is for the win (i think), in terms of prize and quality

H5 for the 3.0" LCD and pretty good quality as well (design is a winner for me as well)

FZ series very competitive as well... (xcept for the noise that's all)

does prosumer have to be megazoom?
why talk bout prosumer everyone only knows megazoom models?
and i wonder if all megazoom owners really fully utilise the complete zoom range.. not saying that megazooms are bad lah, but i personally favours wide angle prosumer more than megazoom as i found wide angle more suitable and practical for normal use.. for wide angle prosumer, my personal favourite will be the canon S80. it's not really a popular model, and i think not many know bout it, but it's small enough to be pocketable, and yet still pack pro features..

Save ur hard earned cash.

If u just wanna shoot, Canon PowerShot A530, A550.
Wan fast flash recycle, IXUS models.
wanna shoot with IS A670IS.
wanna shoot with IS with fast flash recycle, IXUS 70. This is already ~more than 1.5k?

If u wan performance at a low price, Nikon's D40 starts cheap at just over 2k.

Where does that leave a "prosumer"? Expensive and underperforming.

Whats your budget first?
Price can vary from 1300k~2400k

And what are your criteria?
-Pocketable?
-Super-zoom?
-Wide andgle?
-connectivity options? (like external flash, telephoto converter, etc?)

To get things into perspective..

Ur requirement "Just want to take good quality pictures & night shots & moving objects."

Good quality pics - Most compacts do that. Canon's are my fav.

Night shots - U really want a dSLR cos the tiny sensor (in comparison) of a "prosumer" is bad at High ISOs. D40's can shoot at ISO 1600 without much thought and still look great. The only prosumer with a huge sensor is from Sony.

Moving object - Prosumer CANNOT track moving objects. Get a dSLR. only a dSLR can focus fast enough for that. Canon dSR's focus speed is amazing.

So for ur req, a prosumer will not cut it. U'll get 1/3 of what u want, which u can get with a compact. Y waste the extra cash? The only reason to get a prosumer.. is if u really want it O.o (and for some wierd reason u dun wan a dSLR)

Dude, the [18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor] is awesome! (Thats the kit lens). The Canon's kit is not as good though. U dun need another lens unless u have wierd requirements. If u need the zoom, I'd suggest cropping it. Since the image quality on a dSLR is so much better, there really is nothing to worry about.

Also, a D40 will meet all ur requirements. Takes great quality pics, Works OK (worlds better than any compact, prosumers included) for motion, And great low light shots. U win!

Just save a lil more and be happy. Unless u really HAVE to get a camera now. If that was the case, u would have ALREADY bought it and not ask here. =)

The next lens u want is a 18-200mm VR. that costs a bomb. dun worry about it until ur rich. Its still almost imposibble to get (even though its released in 2005). Its that good.

Side note: Forget a dSLR if u wanna make videos and dun mind sacrificing the performance.
If u really must have a zoom then the new 55-200mm VR will probably be great.
Again, dun worry about it till ur rich.

just stay with the kit lens for now. it comes "free" with D40 anyway biggrin.gif
spend another few bucks on flash instead. after all you said good quality pictures & night shots & moving objects. you didn't mention big zooms

Olympus SP550 I manage to get it for RM1680 with 1GB Xd card.
Considering this camera support wide angle and also long zoom.
It is recommended if budget might be the constraint.

prosumer + long zoom.. bcoz.. if u stick with 10x. then it gonna be there forever.. unlike the dslr.. u can change the lense..

honestly.. most of the time i'm using half of the zoom that i have.. 12x picture sometimes turn to be unsharp....

12x only use to watch "leng lui" from distance.. kekekek

but.. why not go fz50...(even i use s3is).. got hot shoe.. and also g7 (canon) -(metal body) if u don't mind about long zoom

but for night picture, i reckon dslr though..(d40 or 350d - rm2599)

i heard that Olympus SP-550
the image quality is poor, plus the AF is bad
i still believe that Canon offers the fastest AF (USM) and better sensors
so s3 is still better, no offence here juz giving out my opinions

Personally, I would prefer Fuji S6500 rather than Cannon, cause.
1. have manual zoom and manual focus rings.
2. Lower Noise

since you're going considering Super-zoom....Try Fuji. you might like it. Price is around 1500? Almost like S3IS.

@tongyam,
Hows your FZ20 doing? It was my dream cam previous few years.. until now, I will like the look it it..very 'Ganas'.

ALL fixed lens camera's focus too slowly, Y bother? Get the superior D40 instead! 350D's are also cheap now, but u have to deal with a lousy kit lens and old camera. Fuji does not have less noise, it just has more Noise Reduction. U can Reduce noise with software to get the same results.

MF when a person is running across ur screen to u? good luck getting more than 1 shot in. let alone a clear in focus shot. and good luck with that EVF. Another reason Y real SLRs are superior.

I vote the canon S3is, i tested both camera, The S3 zoom and af is fast and the image quality is very good. And i personally don like the SP550, althogh it got 18x zoom but it take almost more than 1s to auto focus at longest zoom. and the image stablerizer oso not working quite well, image quality not so good and blur if u got shaky hand, high iso are useless with a small sensor, there will be noisy if u set iso more than 400. Some more i think don need too long zoom unless i really wanna spy some "leng lui" tongue.gif

If bufget is allow, go for d40, u can get it ar 2000+ depend on how u bargain. DSLRs are diffrent level in image quality and speed. POISON POISON happy.gif

a few reasons to get prosumer over DSLR would be the lens.

not everyone is into changing lens. the kit lens of a DSLR wouldn't be able to take macro shots as well as a prosumer.

my Fuji S7000 can take better macro shots than my 350D on kit lens. smile.gif simply because the kit lens was not made for macro shots (that's why they have lens for macros).

when comes to zooming, heck my S7000 zooms further than my 350D kit lens as well. haha. so yeah it's all rounder with that lens.

also another thing about prosumer, is that instead of using the viewfinder you can use the LCD to aim your shots. some people just love that, DSLR you don't have that unless you buy that Olympus DSLR. smile.gif

some prosumers like those from panasonic and fuji (not sure about the Canon S3IS) comes with manual-focus lens ring. smile.gif cool feature but i find it drains battery like silly due to it's motorized nature. and usually the prosumer will come with a lot of settings not found on P&S but P&S seem to be offering more feature than before. smile.gif the game is some what closing IMO.

so yeah - that's my take, that's why i'm not selling my prosumer yet because it does have it's flexibility and functions.

even the Canon G7 is a good camera despite it's price being that of a DSLR.

IMO most important is to know what you want and what the camera can do for you.
