Hello guys,

I have 2 internet subscription: Unifi (100Mbps) & TIME (100Mbps).
Both are using Dlink DIR-850L and both connection is at different place.

What I noticed:
On 2.4GHz WiFi : The connection maxed out at 50Mbps
On 5.0GHz WiFi : The connection can reach max 100Mbps

Why does this happen? Theoretically on 2.4GHz N connection it can reach max speed too.
Do you guys have this problem too? icon_question.gif

Because DIR-850 Wireless N (2.4Ghz) channel wide is only 20mhz and most device wifi adapter inside your device only support 1 stream for wireless N so you'll get at most 50mbps.

Or you can flash it to ddwrt and use 40mhz channel, probably will get 100mbps provided no wifi interference from other device using the 2.4Ghz band. Didn't test personally with dir850, do so at your own risk wink.gif

Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't change to 40MHz only.. It is auto:

Please don't force 2.4GHz wifi to 40MHz. That is simply retarded to do so on a congested environment with everyone now has faster broadband speed & much higher traffic than before. You will get higher throughput during off peak hour but will get worse experience during peak hours and worst case scenario may get to the point of it being unusable for low latency applications (latency fluctuations due to increased retransmission). You can leave it to auto (20/40MHz) so that it can use 40MHz when possible during low traffic off peak hours, but never ever forcing it to 40MHz unless you are in secluded or low density area and you sure you won't interfere much with your neighbour wifi.

The fact remains 2.4GHz band is simply too congested. You have no choice but use 5GHz or other medium if you require higher bandwidth. Don't follow those silly & outdated so called consumer wifi optimisation guides. They might get away with it back then as the wifi frequency band is not as congested and the traffic was way lower than nowadays.

As mentioned by Jio dont bother trying use wider channel on wireless n since Time fiber is usually available in packed condo or flat. With so many other wifi router nearby co sharing the band it better to stick with 20MHz or stick with wireless ac.

Only downside with ac the radius is about half of what n capable of. So f if you want to cover a pretty big house you need more then one ap beside the main router and make sure your end device support ac as well.

Wonder if anybody who upgraded to expensive router
can get 100Mpbs on 2.4ghz

it is illogical,
even when laptop beside router also cannot get 100Mpbs

Blacktubi and the rest already explained pretty much eveything from what i read. You need to understand wireless n is much slower then wireless ac but unfortunately at the same time the wifi radio signal of ac is much smaller. There no way around it but to fork out more for a better ac router.

Forget about believing what is advertised at the box claiming wireless n speed at 300mbps, those are theorical speed inside a lab where there zero interference. You might say get 200+mbps using wireless n at most in real world scenario if both the router and your end device also capable to receive and transmit at 300mbps, which is usually reserved for flagship devices.

Fair enough.
100Mbps wireless throughput is difficult to achieve.

From what I gathered, THEORETICALLY
N300 devices provide about 70Mbps/20MHz mode, 100Mbps/40MHz mode.
None of the above can be achieved in real life.
best is move to an AC class router in 5Ghz

Instead of raw speed for a single user,
If there are a lot of devices or users connecting to wifi,
a router with better traffic control ability works better.

so much for a 100Mbps connection.

U should get an AP. Or buy a new router and use the dir850L as an AP

What devices are you testing with?

For 2.4Ghz, 20Mhz channel width, dual stream. The max I've tested is 70-90mbps in fairly good wifi conditions. In case you're testing with Apple products, this is the max that you'll get at 2.4Ghz, dual stream.

I'm not sure why you're only getting 50mbps. I'd probably guess interference from neighbours.

I don't have a 100mbps connection to test with but at home I can get full 60mbps from my 2.4Ghz wifi, UniFi30x2 and a MacBook Pro.

Hi, 2.4GHz is using wireless N technology which is capable to support up to 70Mbps speed max only.

Consider upgrading to TP-Link Archer C7 or C9.
Easy to get 100Mbps over Wi-Fi.

Only 5GHz is capable of supporting up to 100Mbps speed.
Smartphone without AC cannot achieve that 100Mbps speed only laptop is capable of getting 100Mbps via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
Try changing your channel to 11.

Check is there any same channel is being used by your neighbors.
Same channels may reduce the speed.

D-Link 850l signal and WiFi speed is very weak.

Thanks

hi guys thanks for the reply. Yes, I tested with my iPhone and my laptop.

10 years old laptop:
On 2.4GHz : max 20-30 Mbps
On 5 GHz : max 20-30 Mbps

5 years old laptop:
On 2.4 GHz : 70-90 Mbps
On 5 GHz : 100 Mbps

iPhone 6:
On 2.4 GHz : 50 Mbps
On 5 GHz : 100 Mbps

I have tried many settings combination and it doesn't get any better. Reading from the replies above, I think there is nothing that can be done. Below is the screenshot of the wifi connection at my condo (highlighted in yellow is mine). Anyway, thanks all!

Wah, what 10 yr old laptop got 5Ghz?

My MacBook Pro 2010 gets the same as your 5 yr old. 70-90mbps is the limits of 2.4Ghz dual stream 20Mhz.

iPhone 6 is single stream. At 2.4Ghz, 20Mhz, the speed of 50mbps is excellent already.

So you're actually getting optimum results at 2.4Ghz. There's really nothing to improve for 2.4Ghz.

It is expected.

N150 or N300 is the marketing speed.
N300 too is an aggregation of N150 @ 2.4Ghx + N150 @ 5Ghz

1 Spatial stream/antenna can only support max 72Mbps @ 20 Mhz during the 2.4Ghz mode.

850L is 2 spatial streams, while it at 2.4Ghz and can only support max 144Mbps/40 Mhz or still 72Mbps/20 Mhz max if your receiver only got only 1x1 spatial stream.

But in real life, it is impossible to achieve throughput of 72Mbps per stream.

Anyway, there's exception for some ASUS product for wireless N, due to different modulation used,1 spatial stream can go more than 172Mbps and advertised as N200 per stream, they equip it with 3 stream and called it as N600 and need a special receiver too.

If you are in 100Mbps or higher internet speed in the wide area, you really need multiple wireless AC points.

No to worry wifi speed the most important

Data download speed

If 50mbps - 5.5 to 6 Mb/s (unifi 50mbps)

You try download any file from net. You should get min. 10mb/s

Since they can hardware coded stuffs in this router, they will start to redeploy this router to customers again.

Many still fail to understand as Jio mentioned, if you receiving device is not capable (notebook, phone, etc) obviously the bandwidth is gonna be lesser.

I have DIR850L as well,

The max on 2.4 is 144Mbps
The max on 5Ghz is 6XXMbps

Don't have DIR-850L now. I get 68mbps with DIR-615 & iPhone 6s.

With a Mikrotik hAP AC Lite, for 2.4Ghz, dual stream 20Mhz and single stream, 40Mhz, highest I get is 108-109mbps. I think can go a bit more higher but test limited by Unifi 100mbps.
