Today I first use the pay wave function on my credit card. While it is convenient, I notice a drawback, for example, if I lost my card without knowing it, someone who picks it up could just buy something opting to pay by the pay wave function even he does not know my PIN number as long as the value of the merchandise is below the capped amount. So i do not actually see it more secure than the signature method which has been phased out though it was claimed signature could be forged.my question is: By using pay wave, is there a way for the cashier to identify the identity of the payee in relation to the identity of the card holder. And for PIN number too, my sibling who sometimes uses my card (I know it's not right but sometimes just want to utilise the features of the card whose quota is still available 😝) do not need to imitate my signature like what was previously done, as long as the PIN number is known and payment will be made as if the card belongs to the person who swaps it ...

FYI, Paywave only can be use RM250 and below transaction, not more than that amount

Mm.. 250/transaction, not per day right?

The logic is pretty simple. We should keep our card as best as we can just as how we would keep our wallet that's full of cash as safe as we can. You see, when you bring cash, say RM500 at any given time and your wallet is stolen, you lose your cash immediately unless you are able to catch the thief and get your belongings back in which happens very very rarely.

Meanwhile, with credit & debit card, you have some sort of security. First of all, the wave function only allows payment RM250 and below without pin. So if you were to lose your card, the max amount the thief would be able to use would be RM250 max. The best part is, if you are quick to aware that your card has been stolen, you should call the bank promptly to block the card. This buys you some time. I believe anyone who steals other people belongings will immediately go as far as they can to avoid being caught hence the time they take could be useful for us to quickly call the bank. Well, let's say your phone was stolen as well, you could always get anyone's help to borrow their phone and make a quick call to the bank to block your card.

It's our perception towards these cards that's important. Of course banks are always finding ways to improve the safety of the cards but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't take any action on our end.

Also, PIN based cards/transaction is definitely more secured than signature based as signature base cards do not have any limit as the pay wave mentioned above and your signature will be behind your card which could take a few minutes for anyone to quickly learn to forge your signature. Furthermore not to mention that majority of merchants previously do not even bother to check/compare the signature on the transaction slip vs the signature behind the card. With PIN, it's near impossible for anyone to guess your PIN especially if they do not have any background about you (sometimes some people tend to use DOB as PIN number).

Thanks mate, this explanation is very thorough

Credit card application for PB Visa Signature was unsuccessful though I fulfil the income requirement. Any suggestion on how to get it approved besides pledging FD? Been applying since early of this year 😔. CCRIS all 0, housing loan below 100k, BT below 10k, like this also don't approve?

I think I read somewhere in the forum that if pay credit card outstanding using cash effective certain date, will be charged? Does anyone know which bank is it or can direct me to the thread? Thank you.

Hi all,
1) may I know pledge FD to apply for credit card must be new funds? If I have a FD in a bank for few years which I had not and will not uplift in the near future, can I ask for that FD to be pledged in return of approval of a credit card instead of pumping new funds?
2) Do I have liberty to ask for the amount to be pledged so that the credit limit will equal what I desire?
3) interest on the FD belongs to me or the bank?
Thanks

Edit: Q3 added.

1) fresh fund is for promo FD. pledging for cc, you only need to place for board rate only, so fresh fund not necessary required.

2) pledged fd amount = credit limit, 1:1

3) interest/profit is yours. it's just normal FD placement. just the FD is tied to cc, so you cannot uplift it until the cc is canceled.

Thank you. Here are some updates from me too.

1) need to place for 12 months with the branch where one applies the credit card. if existing FD is from other branch, cannot pledge

2) pledged fd amount: credit limit = 1:0.90 dry.gif

3) upon uplifting, funds will only be refunded to customer after 35 days. the FD cert is also to be kept by the bank dry.gif

the above referring to public bank

AND you need to spend a few hundred RM for documents and stamp duty (0.5% of credit facility).

hmm.gif i was informed the stamp duty RM10 only. Was not informed regarding the spend of a few hundred of RM for documents, but if that's the case then I think not worth liao ..

Can we call to bank to temporary block the credit card for transaction, similar to the freeze card under bigpay.

Edit: for "safety" purpose rather than fraud transaction that has taken place

I just gave the same reason to Maybank but they refused to freeze the card, stating that they could only do so if the card was stolen... 😟

If I make a purchase and want to convert to 0% installment over X month, the merchant must be under the bank approved list or can be any merchant?
Bank: Maybank, Public Bank

Hi, may I know the term "overseas spend" refers to physically swiping the credit card overseas or transaction that is paid in foreign currency but done locally? Thanks
