U can own, but the risk is high, if you lose the gun and it's used in a wrong way, u will be in deep shit. Also u need license to proof that u are capable of using the firearm so you need to pay from time to time, the procedure is troublesome so ppl cannot easily get 1.

Ok ... my bad. It is shotgun, not rifle. Hard to get but still possible especially people in rural area. True. Last time it is a bit easier to apply but now more strict. If your dad want to pass down to you, you can give reason why need to own one the chance is still good. However, if your dad already surrender it and you want to apply new, chance it is 98% rejected especially if you live in city area.
