Mac Mini 2012 quad cores are popular because they're significantly better than the existing mac minis which are dual core. The non server version also boost a dedicated graphics card.

But take in mind that OS X Sierra is already only support Mac Mini 2010 and above. Buying an old mac means you may be stuck at one OS sooner or later.
