hey folks,

I basically own a samsung monitor, wireless mouse and a usb keyboard with atlec lansing speakers. I am now coming to a cross road thinking of what decision to make.

Option 1:
Getting mac mini with 8GB ram and utilize my existing hardware and make into a mac computer. I will use for entertainment purpose for most of the time. But just wonder how if i wanna edit videos with imovie, not sure if mac mini can handle my usage or not? Also heard that i need to use thunderbolt monitor for better mac experience. Not sure if that is true?

Option 2:
Use the money to build a rim with window pc (i5, with ssd and geforce 1050 maybe?) for some work such as video editing, light gaming, etc.

Then buy an ipad for entertainment. rclxms.gif

I used to own an ipad mini and due to lack of upgrade, i already sold it off. Now im giving a choice, i dont want to use that on wrong decision.

Folks' advise is highly appreciated! tongue.gif

Option 2

But why buy an ipad? The desktop u dont use for entertainment?

Or u mean u want ipad for entertainment AND PORTABILITY?

IF u want to get ipad for portability, why isnt getting an ipad in option 1 bro?

Actually i wanted the imovie for easy video editing purpose. Not sure if we are getting aligned. My entertainment also include photo editing plus video editing. With mac computer it is easy for me. With windows, there are a lot of software available but they aren't free. Hence, in my option 2, i'm getting ipad to compromise that biggrin.gif

option 1 basically covers mac experience (imovie, photo editing) and it is portable too (provided the place has a monitor with hdmi). But then i think it is not for light gaming. sweat.gif

Why not both?

Solution: Hackintosh( Dual Boot Windows 10 - Mac OSX)

My Hackintosh at 1 year. Has it been worth it?

So with option 2, u getting an ipad to edit simple videos and photos issit?

If yes then its a good idea..i would still opt for option 2..it covers all ur needs..just that my suggestion is dont buy the ipad immediately, get the pc, test out the softwares, if puas then just use the pc and save money rather than buying the ipad..if tak puas then only get the ipad

A pc with 1050 is good enough for gaming with medium settings dy..u can do any graphics demanding gaming with mac mini lol

Yeah. This should solve your dilemma. Haha. Something like that. Basically, you just take your normal PC rig. Partition the hard disk and install MacOS on it. So when you boot it up you have the option to boot into Windows or MacOS.
However, installing it not that straightforward. I'm planning to try it out soon with my PC. biggrin.gif

Mac Mini can handle all your basic needs.

If u plan to do video editing, please add more RAM. My 2012 i7 Mac Mini has 16GB RAM.

TS, do you mind if I tumpang your thread to ask you Mac experts input?

For Mac mini, is the base 4G RAM with 500HDD good enough for normal computer tasks - email, surfing, office word and PP? no games or editing

some recommend must have 8G and/ or get SSD but these push it out of budget as base unit at RM 2099 is within my budget. Thank you

I dont mind.

I think this i could answer you cuz i did a bit of research on it. It is sufficient for daily use. But then i suggest to upgrade to SSD and 8gb ram at least. Right now the newest mac mini is almost impossible to customize after purchase as apple has limit it. If you want to have future upgrade. Afraid that you have to search for the older 2011/2012 mac mini. biggrin.gif

Nope.

If 2012, have built-in HDMI port.

For Thunderbolt port, u need Mini DVI with active support. Most adapters sold outside only offer passive support.

Very kind of you and thank you for reply. The RAM I could stretch budget as it costs RM460 online but the SSD is fusion drive a whopping 1K over.

Any suggestions for cheaper SSD alternative or must be via online store only?

Mac Mini 2012 quad cores are popular because they're significantly better than the existing mac minis which are dual core. The non server version also boost a dedicated graphics card.

But take in mind that OS X Sierra is already only support Mac Mini 2010 and above. Buying an old mac means you may be stuck at one OS sooner or later.

If its no biggie to you, by all means.

One thing worth mentioning about Mac mini late 2012 and later is they have Bluetooth 4.0 LE.
It means you can use the handoff and Continuity function between iOS devices and MacOS devices.
And it is the last model that allows you to upgrade your RAM easily (RAM is soldered in the later version of mini)...

If I were to buy a mini, I'd definitely choose this Late 2012 mini...
