Merchants do not lose anything if a customer does not use AMEX since the bank chargers are only applied when a transaction is made. Therefore a merchant would not drop amex just because there are less people using it. In fact the merchants are happier if there are less AMEX users since they have to pay less bank chargers. AMEX bank chargers are higher than VISA/MASTER.
