Buy those 15W40 engine oils in 5L/6L/7L  packing. Top up when necessary.
For example, Rimula R4X (5L), BHP Trans Super (7L), Mobil Delvac MX (5L) etc.

will it hurt the engine by using slghtly thinner oil such as 15w40?

What's your car mileage and what car are you driving ? If your car mileage is not too high top overhaul will solve oil consumption problem but if it's too high mileage sometimes need to do full overhaul.

Engine wear already happen. No point u use more expensive or better oil. It is waste of money. You will keep burning those 10-15/40 oils no matter how expensive it is. Its either u keep using the current 20/50 and live with it being under powered or go for overhaul. White smoke usually means piston rings are done already.
