Successful Brimstone weapon integration flight trials continue for Typhoon

13 Mar 2017

A further series of flight trials of Eurofighter Typhoon with the low-collateral, high precision MBDA Brimstone air-to-surface weapon have been successfully completed at BAE Systems’ site in Warton, Lancashire.

The trials are part of ongoing development work on the Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) package for Typhoon, which will also deliver further sensor and mission system upgrades as part of Project CENTURION  – the programme to ensure a smooth transition of Tornado capabilities on to Typhoon for the Royal Air Force by the end of 2018.

The trials were conducted using the UK Typhoon Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA) 6, and formed part of work to gather air data on the weapon, measure environmental effects and expand the carriage envelope. Firing trials are now scheduled for later this year.

Gripen E on target for debut flight in second quarter

5 March, 2017
By: Craig Hoyle

London: Saab’s Gripen E remains on course to make its flight debut during the second quarter of this year, as the Swedish manufacturer steps up its sales efforts for the new-generation fighter and its earlier C/D-standard variant.

Confirming that lead prototype aircraft 39-8 will get airborne before the end of the second quarter, head of Gripen Jerker Ahlqvist says: “So far, everything is going according to plan, and it looks really promising.” Deliveries of the GE Aviation F414-powered jet will start in 2019 for the Swedish air force, followed by aircraft for export customer Brazil.

Low-speed taxi tests with the Gripen E commenced at Saab’s Linköping production site late last year, and Ahlqvist says the company is currently validating its software in preparation for the first flight. Aircraft 39-8 is currently in ground test, while the second of its eventual three prototypes has entered final assembly.

Bulgaria May Get Saab Jets in Its Biggest Defense Deal in Decades

Bulgaria said it favors Saab AB fighter jets to replace its outdated Soviet-era aircraft in the nation’s biggest defense deal since the end of the Cold war.

The Black Sea country’s interim government approved the results of a tender to purchase at least eight Gripen jets for as much as 1.5 billion lev ($835 million), ranking Sweden’s offer first, Defense Minister Stefan Yanev told reporters Wednesday in Sofia. Bids from Portugal for used F-16s and from Italy for Eurofighter Typhoon planes were ranked second and third. Further negotiations will be held by the new government that takes office next month, Yanev said.

Saab looks toward three critical competitions for near-term Gripen C/D sales

LINKÖPING, Sweden — Saab is eyeing three competitions in Botswana, Bulgaria and Slovakia as key near-term opportunities to sell more of its Gripen C/D fighter jets and re-energize its production line, company officials said Tuesday.

One of those countries, Bulgaria, seems poised to cement a deal to buy eight new-build Gripens to replace its MiG-29s. In April, Bulgarian interim Deputy Prime Minister Stefan Yanev announced that the Saab jet was the preferred option, potentially beating out secondhand F-16s from Portugal and secondhand Eurofighter Typhoons purchased from Italy.

“What happens now is they are forming the new government, so now we are waiting for information on how to proceed,” Richard Smith, Saab’s head of Gripen marketing, told reporters during a May 9 briefing in Linköping, Sweden. Defense News is attending a Saab media trip this week and has accepted hotel and travel accommodations from the company.

Saab reveals Global ambition with updated Swordfish

11 May, 2017 | SOURCE: Flightglobal.com | BY: Craig Hoyle | Stockholm

Revealing the company's updated Swordfish design on 10 May, head of marketing and sales for airborne ISR Emilien Saindon said the heavily adapted business jet – using Bombardier's Global 6000 airframe – would have greater weapons carrying ability than the design announced in February 2016.

Four under-wing pylons will each carry a maximum load of 770kg (1,700lb), he says, enabling the platform to deploy stores including Eurotorp MU90 torpedoes and Saab RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missiles. By using a twin-round pylon on the inboard station, the aircraft will be able to carry six torpedoes, with no need for an internal weapons bay .

For anti-submarine warfare operations, the Global 6000 also gains a magnetic anomaly detection boom and an increased sonobuoy carriage and dispenser fit.

BAE shows first Typhoon for Oman

15 May, 2017 | SOURCE: Flightglobal.com | BY: Craig Hoyle London

Oman will take delivery of its first Eurofighter Typhoon later this year, with BAE Systems having rolled out a lead example for the customer at its Warton final assembly site in Lancashire, the UK.

Signed in December 2012, Oman's Typhoon order is for nine single-seat aircraft and three two-seat examples to support training activities. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows the nation as also having options on a further 12 examples.

BAE also showed Muscat's first new-generation Hawk advanced jet trainer. Eight Mk 166 examples are on order for the Gulf nation's air force, which already operates the single-engined type in the earlier Mk 103 trainer and armed, single-seat Mk 203 variants.

Dassault Aviation sees new deal for its Rafale fighter jet in 2018

Big Story 10 | Sun May 14, 2017 | 6:25pm EDT (Reporting by Mathieu Rosemain; Editing by Nick Zieminski)

French plane-maker Dassault Aviation SA sees a new sale contract for its Rafale fighter jet in 2018, Chief Executive Eric Trappier said in an interview with French regional newspaper Sud-Ouest on Sunday.

"After a contract signed in India, regarding the delivery of 36 Rafale jets, and the order of 24 of these aircraft by Egypt and 24 other by Qatar, we should soon conclude a fourth contract abroad, but it will rather be in 2018," Trappier said in the interview.

"We're notably in talks with Malaysia over 18 aircraft, but also with India over a second contract," the plane-maker's CEO said. "India's needs are enormous. Hence, for its navy, 57 aircraft are considered," he added.

Royal M'sian Navy boat, nine sailors, disappear in waters off Johor

By Hariz Mohd - May 22, 2017 @ 10:42am (New Straits Times)

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) sailors are unaccounted for after their boat went missing during an operation against illegal foreign fishermen, about 29 nautical miles off Tanjung Sedili in Johor on Saturday.

The missing comprise one officer and eight personnel of other ranks, who were part of RMN’s first fast-attack craft (missile) KD Perdana’s boarding team.

A statement released by RMN’s Naval Region 1 Base said the KD Perdana was on a routine patrol, sailing in waters off Tanjung Sedili, when they spotted foreign fishing vessels carrying out illegal activities in Malaysian waters.

A boarding team boat carrying the nine sailors was launched from the KD Perdana to investigate the vessels.

"Before the boat went missing, the boarding team and KD Perdana were in operation to chase out the foreign vessels.

"The last location of the boat, before communications were lost, was about 29 nautical miles off Tanjung Sedili Besar. The weather was fine, with waves at between 1 and 1.5m in height; while winds were reported to be between 20 and 30 kilometres per hour," said the statement.

Following the incident, the KD Perdana tried to search for the boat and its crew, before a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched by the Navy at 7.30pm yesterday.

The SAR involves assets and personnel from the RMN, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Sedili Fishermen Association.

Vessels include the RMN's KD Perkasa, the KD Pendekar, the KD Handalan, the KD Terengganu, the KD Kelantan, two helicopters, MMEA's KM Tegas, the KM Tatau, the KM Pekan and several boats.

The statement added that it is believed that the boarding team could have sought shelter at nearby islands or with fishing vessels in the area.

Boeing sets out upgrade ambitions for Super Hornet, Growler platforms

Gareth Jennings, St Louis - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly (18 May 2017)

The US Navy (USN) may roll-out future upgrades for the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet beyond the Block 3 enhancement currently earmarked, as it looks to maintain the combat aircraft in service for decades to come.

Speaking at the company's St Louis facility in Missouri, Larry Burt, director of Global Sales & Marketing for the Global Strike division, said that, while the USN's focus is currently on the Block 3 upgrade that it set to begin rolling off the production line in 2020, further enhancements are very likely as the USN looks to maintain the combat aircraft in service out into the 2040s.

"When you look at flight plan for the future of the aircraft, there could well be lots of new capabilities added after Block 3. The Block 3 is built around a new processor that is a hundred times more powerful that today's. This processor resides outside of the aircraft's Operational Flight Program [computer], and so is not tied to its five-year software development cycle. It is truly open architecture that allows for plug and play of weapons, sensors, and systems," Burt said.

Providing Electronic Warfare suite for U.S. Special Operations Command C-130s

12 Jul 2017

SOCOM will upgrade the survivability equipment of its AC/MC-130J fleet with the capability to detect, identify, locate, deny, degrade, disrupt, and defeat various threats.

The U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has selected BAE Systems to provide new electronic warfare (EW) systems for its fleet of AC/MC-130J aircraft. BAE Systems will upgrade the aircraft’s survivability equipment with the capability to detect, identify, locate, deny, degrade, disrupt, and defeat various threats that aircrews encounter in hostile and challenging environments.

This final selection follows a competition that included a system design phase and critical technology demonstration. The company received a $67 million contract modification to a competitively awarded contract. This new phase of the program is for the systems integration and installation of the EW systems — all to be conducted over the next 30 months. The contract’s total value, including all options, is expected to exceed $300 million.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will spend 40 million pounds ($52 million) on upgrading the anti-missile defense system of its Typhoon fighter jets, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said on Thursday, after awarding a contract to Italian company Leonardo.

The work will improve Typhoon's Defensive Aids Sub System (DASS) supplied by Leonardo, and the government said it would help the aircraft in missions against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The contract will sustain 65 jobs in Leonardo's site in Luton, 30 miles north of London, and supports a further 41 jobs at BAE Systems in Warton, northwest England.

Boeing completes deliveries of F-15SG jets to Singapore

By: Mike Yeo, July 12, 2017

MELBOURNE, Australia — Boeing has completed the delivery of eight more F-15SG Eagle multirole fighter jets to Singapore, according to data from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA’s website showed that the last of eight F-15SGs on its civil register had its registration canceled in the middle of June, with export being listed the reason for cancellation and its destination listed as Singapore.

These eight F-15SGs on the FAA’s database were first registered in mid-2014 by Boeing. Deliveries of these aircraft began in early 2016, with the first aircraft seen in April at the Republic of Singapore Air Force's training detachment at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

Avionics upgrade to boost French AWACS fleet

31 July, 2017 SOURCE: FlightGlobal.com BY: Craig Hoyle London

An avionics upgrade will enable France's Boeing E-3F airborne warning and control system (AWACS) fleet to remain operationally relevant until at least 2035, the nation's DGA defence procurement agency says.

In operational use since 1992, the French air force's four E-3Fs are to have their analogue cockpits replaced with a digital flight deck featuring five full-colour multifunction displays, DGA says. The modernisation activity also will introduce a digital autopilot capability for the CFM International CFM56-powered type.

The upgrade programme will enable the aircraft to remain compliant with current and emerging air traffic control and navigation requirements, and enable the French air force to reduce its in-cockpit flightcrew from four to three.
