Army knew of soldier's support for Islamic State years before arrest

The Army knew Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang had shown support for Islamic State years ago. It even took away his security clearance for a while.

But he stayed in the service, deploying to Afghanistan in 2013.

Then, last weekend, the FBI arrested the 34-year-old on terrorism charges following a yearlong investigation, shortly after Kang declared his loyalty to the terrorist group and exclaimed that he wanted to "kill a bunch of people," according to authorities.

The case highlights the challenges investigators face with protecting the public from a potentially dangerous actor on one hand and gathering sufficient evidence to enable prosecution on the other.

Kang is on record making pro-Islamic State comments and threatening to hurt or kill other service members back in 2011, according to an FBI affidavit filed Monday in federal court.

The Army revoked his security clearance in 2012, but gave it back to him the following year. Last year, the Army called the FBI when it "appeared that Kang was becoming radicalized," the affidavit said.

Retired Army judge and prosecutor Col. Gregory A. Gross said he was perplexed that the Army allowed Kang to remain a soldier even after his favorable comments toward the Islamic State group.

F/A-18F is no longer seriously considered tho. mindef already set its sight on rafale or typhoon

kinda a punch to the gut for the air force but i do agree that we need ISR and MPA more right now. judging from the "we will consider commercial platform" comment, i can say that mindef prolly have ATR-72 in mind

hope the bean counter could consider upgrading the migs tho. not basic overhaul but complete upgrade

Soldiers patrolling S'wak-Kalimantan border tasked to help contain rabies outbreak

SAMARAHAN: Soldiers stationed along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border have been instructed to prevent stray dogs from the neighbouring country to enter the state.

First Malaysian Infantry Division commander Major-General Datuk Stephen Mundaw said the instruction was issued in the wake of rabies outbreak, which has claimed three young lives in the Serian district.

“We have instructed our men deployed at all entry and exit points to assist people from the State Veterinary Services Department to prevent stray dogs from crossing the border into our territory.

“We are also monitoring the jungle areas along the border as we fear that stray dogs from neighbouring country could be the host of the virus.

“We are doing everything that we can to help state authorities contain the virus,” he told reporters when met after the division’s 51st anniversary celebration at the Muara Tuang camp here today.

where to find legacy hornet. even jordan is not going to sell theirs yet until their new planes arrived and fully operational and that could be a good 5,6 years from now.

those hornets from usn stocks are taking even heavier beatings than ours due to metal fatigue associated with operating from an AC. prolly should ask for lease from Typhoon T1 since RAF and luftwaffe had them in storage and even australia is considering to retire their typhoon as well. or go to france and take their credit line offer

Jordanian soldier gets life term for killing 3 US troops

A Jordanian soldier was sentenced Monday to life in prison after being convicted of killing three U.S. military trainers last year, but some said questions lingered about his motive for the shooting at a Jordanian air base.

Jordan has ruled out terrorism in the November shooting in which the convoy of the U.S. Army Green Berets came under fire at the base entrance.

The defendant has said he felt no animosity toward Americans and opened fire because he believed the base was coming under attack.

However, relatives of the slain U.S. troops have described security camera footage that they say shows him shooting for six minutes, reloading and aiming at the Americans, even as they identify themselves as friendly forces

After a “not guilty” plea, the Jordanian soldier, 1st Sgt. Marik al-Tuwayha, was tried by a military court in Jordan’s capital of Amman for the killings of Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Lewellen, 27, of Kirksville, Missouri; Staff Sgt. Kevin J. McEnroe, 30, of Tucson, Arizona; and Staff Sgt. James F. Moriarty, 27, of Kerrville, Texas.

During the monthlong trial, he watched the proceedings silently while standing in a cage in the courtroom.

He did not react Monday when the judge announced the verdict and the maximum possible sentence, life in prison with hard labor. When he was led out of the cage, he said: “I have all the respect for the king, but I was doing my job.”

Chinese Navy spy ship rattles Talisman Sabre war games off Queensland coast

A high-tech Chinese spy ship has been spotted off the Queensland coast monitoring joint military exercises between Australia and the United States, in what Defence officials have described as an "unfriendly" and "provocative" act.

The ABC can reveal the Auxiliary General Intelligence (AGI) vessel from the People's Liberation Army was sighted by the Defence Force in international waters during this month's Talisman Sabre war games.

The Type 815 Dongdiao-class AGI vessel is fitted with advanced communications systems designed to eavesdrop on other militaries.

In a statement to the ABC, Defence confirmed the spy ship had "been operating off the north-east coast of Australia" during the joint military exercises.

"The Chinese vessel has remained outside Australian territorial waters but inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Coral Sea," the department said.

"Exercise Talisman Sabre is currently taking place in the vicinity. The vessel's presence has not detracted from the exercise objectives," it added.

Senior Australian military figures also told the ABC China's actions were provocative and sent an unfriendly message.

"At the moment what we see is a double standard where China picks the areas of the Law of the Sea that it likes and refuses to implement those that it doesn't," Dr Graham argued.

"I think it can only expect that to come back as a message in force from Australia and other countries."

The Defence Department said Australia respects the rights of all states to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters in accordance with international law.

Just days ago the Defence Force hosted a senior Chinese PLA General in Australia on a so-called "goodwill" visit.

During the trip, General Wei Liang "exchanged views on regional security issues" including the territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

100th soldier killed in Marawi day after gov't takes key bridge

The death toll reaches the 3-digit mark a day after troops scored a major triumph in the battlefield. They gain control of Mapandi Bridge.

MARAWI CITY, Philippines – The death of an elite Army soldier early morning on Friday, July 21, brought the military's death toll in Marawi City to 100.

The yet to be named soldier – a fighter of the Army Light Reaction force – was advancing to clear another building in the battle zone when a sniper's bullet killed him, according to a Rappler source privy to the operations on the ground.

"He's our 100th KIA (killed in action)," said the source. The military has not released the number of wounded soldiers.

He also died on the 60th day of the clashes against homegrown terrorist groups that pledged allegiance to the international terrorist network Islamic State (ISIS). A few hundred buildings have yet to be cleared in the battle zone.

Official tally shows 99 government forces have been killed in Marawi. The military waits 24 hours before releasing its latest death toll.

Up to 427 terrorists and 45 civilians have been killed, according to military data. A total of 525 firearms were also recovered.

i've said earlier, Arleigh Burke class is shaped as such that the radar return is smaller than it should've been. Watchkeepers on Crystal might have thought only small fishing boat when the fact that it was Fitzgerald.

even if its look like a small fishing boat its not okay to ram right thru it lar
both dun even see each other as both dun even tried to change their course prior to the collision

mccain otherwise was reported to have steering problem b4 her collision
though this only fuels some rumors about possible hack to her system (though that sounds like a total bs)
