I find incorporating heavy Kroc Rows and Rack Pulls really helped to improve my grip. I used to not being able to deadlift with overhand grip pass 275lbs. After incorporating those two exercises, Im able to go up to 315lbs for 5 reps without using straps or changing to mixed grip.
Hope this helps. Doing forearm isolation exercises only will not help.
