just to share some of my experience, after 1 year working in sg.  whistling.gif

food:
hawker food is quite affordable, u can get by ur lunch/dinner with $5
restaurant in mall normally range from ~$8 to any price

transport:
u can get to anywhere in sg by public transport - mrt/bus
so no problem with transport actually. just that u need to plan ur time well
if u stay near to ur office , then thats good and u can save alot in transportation.

accommodation:
a common room here (1pax) include utilities&internet normally rental range from $400-$700 for hdb
if condo around $800-1000+
some include aircon which is always good as weather here 80% of the time is hot

misc:
hippie cafe in sg: coffee price around $5-10, big breakfast can range from $10-30+ depending on the area where the cafe is
library in sg: apa book u mau pun ada, can borrow with a small fees
daily necessities: i see some of my fren always go JB to buy shampoo, food, watson, etc. but for me i would not spend the time going out to JB purposely buying shampoo and stuff.
tax: not much rebate like in malaysia
bank: open dbs/posb easiest, as they accept malaysia IC. also most common bank in sg, can find the atm at every corner.
mobile no.: singtel,starhub,m1. imo, starhub is the balance between singtel and m1, m1 is cheap but line not stable, singtel is stable not price higher.
entertainment: in sg, far more expensive than compare in malaysia.

imo: u can save alot $$$ in sg, unless u always go hippie cafe/restaurant, drink alcohol, or go geylang.
*
2 years experience
food: go pasar food court lo, chicken rice 2.5-3, dai chow 3 can get. when I am very tight I try limited $10 a day. Go air con kopitiam sure have to pay 3.x to 5 a plate/bowl

tax here is much lower ba even without deduction for foreigner. if you convert you save even more.

was wondering guys. whats the alternative way to travel to Singapore from places like Subang?
1. Bus - What bus do you think is the safest and best?
2. Train?
3. Hitch?
*
there is bus departing from subang parade (first coach)

aeroline from sunway pyramid

both depart from 1U as well

if rich enough, easiest and fastest should be fireflyz

Hi commtrader, how much is the average return for reit?5%?How to buy REIT yup?Have to open an trading account? Thanks in advance.
*
Choose a broker and open account lo, all major banks has this service but read up their service charges for buying and selling. You will then need a CDP account before you can trade. No cost before you start buying or selling.

Singapore REIT return range from 5% to 9% per annum, of course not guarantee and you better keep an eye on news and their performance.

alternatively can buy Singapore Saving Bond, currently 2+ % per annum with a 10 years bond (Issued by Singapore Gov)

http://www.sgs.gov.sg/savingsbonds.aspx

low rate (1%+) at the start then every year the rate increase but you can withdraw anytime without penalty. IMHO better than FD if you foresee you wont touch your money for years.

hi all, I'm planning to drive in Japan this coming Oct and I'm holding the Malaysian license...

what I wanna ask is, can I get International Driving Permit (IDP) in SG instead of going back to JPJ in Malaysia? probably from Malaysia Embassy just like our passport?
*
Malaysia license, go back malaysia apply (RM150)

here only entertain Singapore license, wana do here ($20) means have to convert to SG license.

you need to do it within a year of coming into Singapore (as employee) else you need to do the full practical. I heard only not sure but that is what everyone is telling me.

i did it dead on one yr anniversary cause my work require me to drive. Leave some buffer because sometimes the center tends to get a little busy and exam slots are fully booked 2-3 weeks out.

i did mine many years after i got my PR, just BTT, nothing else leh...
if you convert yours before your PR, then the license will have expiry date, and needs to be renewed once, after you get your PR.
if you convert yours after your PR, then the license will have no expiry date.

one of my friend who got his license before PR naively thought his license will be automatically extended/converted to become no expiry upon getting PR, and found out waaaaay after the expiry date(3 years after expiry, to be exact). so now he lost both his malaysia license and SG license, need to start all over again.

learn smtg new then, thanks for sharing

sometimes it's also cos rules and procedures change. last time when i had EP there was stuff like P1 P2 Q1 different rank of EP. then somewhere along the line MOM abolished those rank, but it's not like they will broadcast the changes to all previous EP holders icon_idea.gif

similar story with work on IPA, last time memang can work with IPA, but like the other poster has pointed out, now cannot d, must wait for company to apply pass and get notification letter then only can work.

i feel old now biggrin.gif

I am a big fan of mileage cards (if you have a decent level of spending), Example DBS Altitude, Citi PremierMiles, Citi Prestige, etc etc.

Swipe card get points/miles. Transfer miles to KrisFlyer and redeem for biz class / first class tickets.

2 years ago my wife and I flew on SQ Suites to Tokyo. Then later this year we're flying my parents to Melbourne and my parents in law to Seoul (business only though).

any new airline you are trying other than SQ? i have etihad F booked drool.gif

if you believe in it, you will make it work.

i am just another kuli here too but i believe it and started collecting miles since i started working.

believe me, i get this "you so rich" alot from my friends. But you can either fly luxury with a little bit of strategy or do nothing. Life is all about choices.

sorry if this is answered before, but if we convert while we are on SP/EP (not PR yet), are we required to surrender our Malaysian driving license? I saw some feedback that JPJ will ask us to surrender when we request for the report from them
*
by right yes

then when you want to convert back to Msia license need the get another letter from LTA.

Question, how many of you managed to buy a property in Singapore?
lets say I am 25 and I earn RM5k. I can easily afford a 3-bedroom condo even in Klang Valley, and I don't have to pay for my rent. I can also choose to rent out the rooms for investment.

I can't say the same for Singapore though, around $600-1000 will always go into rent, and a single PR is not eligible to buy HDB.  cry.gif and I don't think i can ever afford a private condo in Singapore
*
the upfront cost is the killer, as there is no hanky panky deal like msia with rebate and what not that you can loan 100% of the actual prop value.

buy toto every mon & thurs and pray

QUOTE(mhyug @ Nov 27 2017, 02:57 PM)
hi guys, im on the verge of being offered a Field Technician  position in singapore with a US based company. They are in the oil and gas industry.

so far im unsure what benefits they are willing to offer me. i suppose it might be just the standard ones like medical.(no housing/  transport. its all under me for those)

ive read about the tax there and im not that sure and just have rough gestimation.

if i were to ask for  a basic of 4.5k - 5k, with the intention of at least taking home about 3.5k of salary post expenses + taxes will this be a good figure? or a is it a viable figure

simply put im looking at a rough figure of Rm10k +/- per month to take home so to speak.

is it possible? all replies and help is appreciated. thanks.
*
https://www.rikvin.com/infographics/persona...s-ya-2010-2017/

tax 1,950 for annual income of 60k

Rent a room should be do-able to save 3.5k with 5k.

if you are not fussy with condition and location, $700 is doable

im renting $800 all inclusive new gen HDB, in front of MRT. Room is abit small but sufficient for one person.

meal at pasar food court, 10 per day is still doable lo so 500 a month is quite OK to include some of your nafsu biggrin.gif Unless you work in CBD then no choice.

in case you guys miss it

open DBS multiplier acc, quite gooding interest pay out

Minimum 2k salary + any spending on cc earn you 1.55% p.a. interest for any balance in the multiplier acc.

dont need to switch your salary to multiplier acc, any DBS/POSB acc also counted.

Higher amount / eligible transaction = higher interest
