been almost a decade since I looked at PC spec, last build and currently still using i5 4460, 970GT 16GB RAM. Only added a SSD and replaced a PSU since then. Otherwise been moving towards laptops.

but want to get back into gaming, budget around RM9k including monitor (currently Dell 2413). Looking for value so no need top end hardware.

what's the current price range for a mid-high end gaming pc ?

I'm currently still using a self built PC from 2014 ...

i5 4460
970GTX
16GB RAM
500GB SSD + 2TB HDD

replaced the PSU a few years ago and think it might be time to pass this PC to my kids.

currently playing Microsoft Flight Simulator and Counter Strike 2. Honestly surprised at how smoothly everything still runs.

Budget?
*
was asking what I should place my budget haha but not more than RM10k including monitor + keyboard/mouse

QUOTE(babylon52281 @ Nov 6 2023, 03:30 PM)
IMHO
Mid would prolly be in the Rm5-7k+ range, with i5 Ksku or i7 nonK, RTX 4060Ti to 4070Ti, or see AMD equivalents for both

High is around Rm 8-10k, with i7 or i9 Ksku, RTX 4080 to 4090, or see AMD equivalents for both
*
16GB RAM still the norm ? if 4070 = 970 of it's era then I might stick to that. As long as it can play the latest games in high (not ultra high)

thinking of replacing my 10yo desktop (i5, 970, 16gb ram) with a mini ITX casing. Currently playing Isonzo, Civ5, CS2 and Flight Simulator

have eyes on the Fractal Design Terra Mini-ITX , wondering what specs I can squeeze in ? Budget RM10k including the case (Lazada is showing around RM900 for the case). Will be reusing everything else (monitor, kb, mouse, speakers).

Depending on which edition, FS is prolly the most demanding in your list.

Whats your monitor/screen size? Your played resolution (HD or 4K)? Preferred game settings (high or low, with/without RT)? Target FPS?

RM 10k is wonderful but depends on how you play, it can be a waste of money if spec too high which you wont feel. And too high specs can also lead to cooling difficulties in a SFF box.

There is also ITX/SFF recos (from Tristanx & Myway) few pages back which you can start with https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4209269/+23860

current monitor is Dell 2413, 1920 x 1080. Game setting high, never tried RT so probably don't need it. FPS above 30.

I guess the only thing I play that could max things out is Flight Simulator (2020)

you don't need a 900 bucks case

thanks guys, I'm actually coming from a BitFenix Prodigy, which was the case I got when I first built it 10 years or so ago. Problem with cheap case I found that they don't last, the Prodigy leg broke about 5 years in when I pressed the power button. Been using a cheapo generic case since then.

Fancy some prebuilt??

Asus is doin some Nuc, to be launch

Asrock as well

It will save a lot of space

thanks ! the smaller the better ... had a look at Asus laptop line to gauge how much a 4070 build will cost

came out with ROG Strix G614J-IN3121W @ RM9k. Which is actually not bad considering it has a screen+k/b+speakers+battery.

hopefully the NUC will be RM8k or less ?

what's a good pairing for 5070Ti with smaller case ? Open to Micro or Mini ATX.

is 64GB RAM recommended ? Storage looking for 2TB SSD (can be 2 x 1TB). Budget say RM8k ?

Hi LYN members,

I am looking to buy and donate a new laptop to a neighbor's child who is starting university but is financially struggling. I want to get them the most reliable machine possible within my budget.

Recipient: University Student

Budget: RM1,500 and a little extra.

Goal: A reliable, basic machine for study that won't break down easily.

Please share your best value-for-money recommendations. Thank you for helping me make this happen!

probably OT, but why not one of your old laptop / device ? if you're worried about wiping it, just bring to a shop and buy a new SSD to put in and ask the shop to set up for you ... probably ~RM50 for setup + RM200 for SSD ?

also depending on their course, sometimes a tablet is sufficient. the uni should have library / computer lab where most of the "heavy" work can be done if needed.
