KL/Selangor, will be flying off soon for studies.

Right so hello guys, this will be my first time building a PC. I've been wanting to build my own gaming rig for long enough, and figured I should give it a shot.

My main aim is to be able to comfortably play recent games at high to max settings at 1080p, 60fps. I actually already have a build in mind centered around an i5 7500 and GTX 1060 at my budget.

There is one challenge, however; I'm a student, currently doing A-Levels with final exams in June. If I score, I get to fly off to the UK in September. Between June and September (I finish a levels early June, fly end of September), I have ample time to invest in this hobby. However, building and playing at home is not enough. I'll be away for 4 years, and I've decided I want to build a pc I can bring with me to the UK. On a flight. Crazy, right? But I've done some research. And here's a build I came up with.

CPU: i5 7500 - RM880 (c-zone)
GPU: Asus GTX 1060 Strix 6GB - RM1699 (c-zone)
Mobo: Gigabyte H270N-Wifi - RM629 (viewnet)
Case: Fractal Design Node 202 + Integra 450W PSU - RM669 (c-zone)
RAM: Aegis 2x4GB DDR4 2400 - RM299 (idealtech)
SSD: Samsung EVO 850 250GB - RM479 (viewnet)
HDD: Seagate 2.5” Barracuda 1TB - RM249 (viewnet)

Total RM4904 without peripherals.

However, this is a pretty specific build, with specific needs and I have no peripherals, and since I need portability might as well put them in anyway.

Peripherals

Monitor: AOC E1659FWU usb - RM389 (viewnet)
Keyboard: ASUS Cerberus - RM199 (idealtech)
Speakers: Logitech z120 - RM59 (idealtech)

Total RM647 for peripherals.
Net total RM5551 (without software pulak but let's not go into that here)

Right so the key here is the small Fractal Design Node 202 mini ITX case that can actually fit a standard GPU. I've checked that the asus strix gtx1060 fits in the case by comparing dimensions. The monitor is key as well; I had to find a portable one and saw this nifty one listed in viewnet's price list.

Now while I'm typing this I'm actually wondering if this is the right place to post this. I'll just post here first, cause I still need suggestions and have a multitude of questions:

- I am fully aware that as a beginner, this build is gonna be a nightmare. Problems with cramming things in getting the cabling right is gonna be a challenge, but I feel so excited to tackle this. Anybody have any experience building mini-ITX? Specifically in this node 202 case?

- Should I go with stock CPU cooler? I don't plan to overclock, so stock should be enough right?

- The case comes with an Integra 450W PSU, but I can also opt for a non psu version; I've read things like the psu being shit, having too many cables etc etc. Should I opt to buy a modular sfx psu instead?

- I've read about people preferring to use a nano gpu instead of a fat gpu due to noise and temperature reasons, thoughts on this? I really wanna run the 1060.

- the case can only support 2 2.5 sata drives, so I've decided on 1 SSD and one 2.5" sata hdd. Will I encounter any problems?

- I had a question about the monitor because I was struggling to find a solution for a portable screen; I then found the usb 15.6" AOC monitor from viewnet, so I guess I'm set (what do you think?)

So my plan is; build the rig in june, get a nice full sized monitor and speaker to go along with it to play at home. Come September, I'll get the usb AOC monitor and logitech z120 speakers for transport to UK. I'll load the keyboard, speaker and maybe monitor (still thinking about this) into check in baggage and the precious rig into hand carry.

Am I crazy? Probably. This is all still theory, I might not go through with it (I'm supposed to be studying now dammit), but it's fun to plan now and I thought it'd be nice to share with you guys.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Need all of you guys' wisdom in this.

If I should post this somewhere else, do let me know.

Cheers!

it might be impossible to bring your rig via carry-on as airlines only allow carry-on luggages with max. weight of 7kg per piece, the case (and the bundled PSU) alone is already weighted around 4.5kg
*
Damn, I didn't realize. Thanks man. I just checked out mas and air asia, and they both specify max 7kg. I'd initially avoid checking in the pc... But now, seeing as there's an onboard limit, perhaps dismantle the gpu, psu, ssd and hdd, check those in and carry on just the motherboard and case maybe? Or the other way round?

Thanks so much for your input man. For psu, I've read that for sfx (specifically for this case) it's either modular corsair or bust. I saw someone recommend against silverstone sfx psu, and I unfortunately cannot find a modular sfx corsair psu on the pricelists. Yeah, I realize now the gpu I was going for is quite overpriced... About the zotac mini, aside from the smaller size and more manageable installation, any drawbacks/compromises from using a mini compared to a full sized 1070? Also, if I use this mini, can I fit a 3.5" sata hdd? And for the monitor, I knew I overlooked something... I guess I got too excited when I saw "usb" cause there's not many portable monitors available in the pricelists from what I can see. My option right now is an Asus mb168b+, and I currently cant find one online that ships to Malaysia. I'm planning to bring a 15.6" laptop with me, use that as a temporary portable monitor maybe? (idk if possible)

QUOTE(richard912 @ Mar 27 2017, 09:35 AM)
Why not consider a gaming notebook instead? It will be portable and mobility will definitely be a plus point for you. Instead of getting speakers, do consider getting a gaming headset as you could have online chats with your family, friends in private when you are abroad. More importantly, don't have to worry about complaints of excessive noise from your neighbors when gaming
*
I forgot to put this in the OP; I'm ruling out gaming laptops for now. I know it's ideal for travelling, but for the performance I want, they're way too expensive. I'm gonna build a pc for home use anyway, so I thought why not make that pc semi-portable; able to move from one permanent location to another (I am not gonna bring it around to classes or on the bus; it'll either stay in my room at home or stay in my room at uni). So yeah, no laptop.

Ah, I actually forgot about headsets. Good call. Might as well invest in a good one and forgo speakers. All I'm thinking is I might want speakers for regular use, as wearing headphones for extended periods of time can wear out my ears/head (if that makes any sense). The home set up will definitely have standard sized speakers. Thanks for the suggestions

For 3.5" HDD, you'll need to use velcro tape if you go for Node 202, Silverstone RVZ02 doesn't need that as it comes with a dedicated slot and mounting screw holes (provided your GPU is short enough, max length is around 200mm, Gigabyte Mini ITX cards qualify for it).

Mini ITX GPU usually comes with a less powerful cooling system, so expect temperature to be slightly higher than normal card, most of the manufacturers reduce the clock speed of the card to overcome overheating issue, so in contrast, you are likely to be few FPS behind the normal card (probably 1 - 3 FPS which is not really that significant after all).

The airflow of Node 202 is pretty bad, I wouldn't recommend fitting a bulky 3.5" HDD inside unless you really need that storage space, external HDD is a better option in this case.
*
QUOTE(lin@lowyat @ Mar 28 2017, 09:56 AM)
If you chosen the casing that FD Node 202 will be the one, just take the one directly with Integra PSU eventho is 450 but is sufficient enough for your 1060.
is a good case, just a lot of people say the airflow not really that good, because inside very cramps..
personal advice, go and buy proc cooler (low profile), if you lazy to measure the height, you can go to pcpartpicker to play around.

For HDD, DO NOT go for 3,5". you only advised to use 2,5" for this case. but your mobo if not mistaken can put m.2 (2280) disk. so total it can cater 3 disk.

Thank you so much for your input friends. However, I have to say, after looking at current gaming laptops and current circumstance, getting a laptop may be the best for me instead of building a pc, since I'll be moving between two countries and won't have the privilege of being able to be with my desktop for a long time. It's quite sad when I discovered today's gaming laptops have come up to speed, because that means I won't be able to build a precious new pc sad.gif it won't be a hobby I'll be doing anymore; instead of picking up parts and putting them together, seeing all my hard work culminate into a beautiful, powerful machine, it'll be just like buying a toy; buy laptop, play it straight. No thrill of pc building, no new hobby to explore, just playing games on an expensive new toy. It really is sad. I have however learnt a lot, and maybe one day will put all this knowledge into good use.

QUOTE(richard912 @ Mar 27 2017, 03:29 PM)
Gaming notebooks come in a myriad of configs and of course, price. It will definitely cost more than desktop, the price paid for portability. Maybe you could take a look at this.
*
That being said, thank you for directing me to this link and ultimately looking at gaming laptops more seriously. I never knew of Nvidia's new pascal architecture and today's laptops being quite decent (although expensive, but as you said, the price paid for portability).

I'm not sad lah, jk only, though I'd love to build a pc, it's not something I can afford (circumstance-wise), and these gaming laptops look really sick. Looking to buy an illegear s5 with kabylake proc and 1070.

Thank you for everything lovely people, and with that, I am moving over to the laptop recommendation thread over at special interest > mobile computing icon_rolleyes.gif

Go for GTX1050Ti instead (your PSU can support it, the card itself is very power efficient), Gigabyte has few GTX1050Ti models priced under RM 800 according to Idealtech's price list.
Intel Core i5 7400/7500 - around RM 800/900
Basic H110 mobo - around RM 250
8GB DDR4 Value RAM - around RM 250
Zotac/Palit GTX1060 6GB (no overpriced Asus/EVGA etc.) - around RM 1300
1TB HDD (no SSD to save cost) - around RM 220
An entry level 500W PSU like FSP Hexa or Corsair VS series - around RM 200
Casing - around RM 200

Total up will be around 3.2k.
*
Thank you!

Okay, to be more specific: I want to play games smoothly at high-utra settings at 1080p 60fps (witcher 3, mass effect series, skyrim, fallout, gta 5, da: inquisition). I've seen benchmarks and by looking at what is mostly recommended here, I've decided on a build centered around a gtx 1060 6gb. One question I have is, for this exact purpose, is an oc rig necesary? K processor and z270 mobo, or is a locked processor + mobo just fine?

Whatever the answer to the above is, how about an rm4k build that can comfortably play games as specified above with upgradeability in mind?

60 FPS is hard to guarantee as there is always a scene that can cause FPS to drop (like massive clash, too many objects to render etc.), if your 60 FPS means in average then it is possible most of the time  nod.gif

OC doesn't bring significant performance improvement in gaming (little to none in general), absolutely no point to get a K CPU unless you have a lot of budget to spare.

For rig with 4k budget, you can consider adding an SSD to the build and upgrade the i5 to i7 to eliminate (or reduce) any kind of CPU bottleneck when you run a CPU demanding title.
*
ayy thanks so much for the help man

what do you think of this build?

i5 7500 - 849 (idealtech)
msi gtx 1060 6gb oc - 1299 (viewnet)
msi h110m pro-vd plus - 269 (viewnet)
kingston d4 pc21333 2x8gb - 508 (254 x 2 - compuzone)
samsung 850 evo 250gb - 482 (compuzone)
wd blue 1tb - 210 (compuzone)
corsair vs 550w - 248 (compuzone)
corsair carbide 100r case - 250 (viewnet)

Total: 4115

as you can see I used the extra money to put in ssd and additional 8gb ram. should I have instead upgraded the other parts like mobo or psu? let me know what you think.

Hi, can anyone help me confirm that the Avexir Core DDR4 2400mhz 2x8gb ram listed on viewnet's and jayacom's pricelist for 499 is in fact 2 sticks of 8gb ram with led? 499 seems a bit too low

Ah yes, I have seen that they updated the pricelist recently. Jayacom still shows 499, do I take that as a misprint and just regard the ram kit to cost 599 when budgeting? That's a more reasonable price for it, no?

Hi all,

I'm still working on my new build. I have written up this "basic" combination of parts for my purpose above:

Ryzen 5 1600 - 1039
MSI B350M Mortar - 480
G. Skill Ripjaws V 2800Mhz 8GB - 313
WD Green 120GB - 254
Gigabyte RX 580 8GB Aorus - 1439
Tecware F3 - 124
Cooler Master VS550 - 365
LG 24MP68VQ - 583
Total - 4597

Let's say I want to cukupkan the cost to 5k. I have a few upgrade options in mind:

Option A - Upgrade RAM to 16gb 3200Mhz memory - Corsair Vengeance LED 3200Mhz 2x8GB (647)
Option B - Upgrade case to Fractal Design Mini Define Mini C (385)
Option C - Upgrade PSU to EVGA Supernova G3 550W (499)

I know that ram is easier to upgrade in the future, and case and psu are important parts that should be spent money on and also harder to upgrade later on. However I still can't decide.

I have done the math, and to get to 5k, I can only go with either:

- option A and C (5065)
- or option B and C (4992)

I can also go with A and B but that will give me 5192, a little over budget. I might consider since I would get a much higher quality, better looking case, but still get fast 16gb ram and decent psu.

Simply put: when building this first time pc, should I choose more ram or better case + psu? Ram can upgrade in the future; might be better to futureproof case and psu.

Opinions?
