Current rig:

I5 3450
B75M D3V
12GB Ram
GTX1060 3GB
Lousy CM Elite case..
500W FSP Hexa

Whats the cheapest PSU and motherboard that I can get to run GTX1060 SLI. I got a spare GTX1060 6GB though, will it run well with the 3GB version?

This is purely for bitcoin mining via nice hash.

I didn't realize that.. sad.gif

I remember only 6GB version supports SLI
Goona be tight squeeze with this budget.
*
Ah damn. Didn't know that

QUOTE(terence_nwb @ Jun 2 2017, 08:40 AM)
Bitcoin mining doesn't require GPU to run in SLI/CF mode, they all can run in solo mode and your mobo is able to support 2 GPU (first one will use PCIe x16 slot, another one will use PCIe x1 slot).

So what basically you need to change is PSU  biggrin.gif
*
SLI mining at a faster rate compared to a single card biggrin.gif

But I found out that my 3GB card can't do SLI

GTX1060 cannot do SLI at all, even with the 6GB, that's why I mentioned to run them in solo mode and go for a PSU upgrade only.
*
I get it now. Thanks biggrin.gif

GTX1060 running at PCIE 2.0 1x speed hmm.gif Wonder if mining bit coins will be much slower compared to 16x speed.

Btw bro, any recommendation on the PSU upgrade. 600W should be good to go?

Samsung 970 Evo Plus is kinda overpriced huh? Didn't know about the ADATA SX8200 Pro until you guys mentioned it rclxms.gif

Thinking between Ryzen 7 3700X vs Intel Core i7-9700 for photo editing (Capture One)? Or should I wait for Intel's 10th Gen to arrive?

Looking to upgrade several parts to my current PC but here are my current PC specs:

Intel i5-3450
Gigabyte B75M-D3V
12GB DDR3 RAM
GTX1060
120GB SSD, 1TB WD Black
FSP 500W
Cooler Master Elite 311+

As you can see, my PC is kinda old already but I upgraded the graphics card and Ram over the last few years. However, I'm looking to upgrade the following parts and appreciate suggestions to the following:

Power supply - Budget RM400-600
Requirements: Fully modular 550-650W.
Optional: Fanless mode, RGB

Looking at EVGA Supernova 650G+ or Fractal ION SFX 650G? Or what about PSUs from Corsair or Cooler Master V series?

Casing - Budget RM400-600
Requirements: Quiet, good airflow, side panel is tempered glass, smaller sized like the Fractal Design Define C, good cable management
Optional: Sound dampening material in the case, RGB

Looking at FD Define C tempered glass edition and Bequiet Purebase 500 Window

HDD
Requirement: Reliability, as I need to store all the raw files from my camera.

I noticed Hitachi drives are the most reliable around but it's not locally available, so I'm opting between Toshiba P300 3TB vs WD Red 3TB. Would the WD Red designed for NAS, be suitable to store camera raw files?

Power supply = Get Super Flower or EVGA. Nothing could go wrong.
Case = Fractal Design Meshify C
HDD = I will never recommend Hitachi due to warranty void from the shit compound on their HDD. Not to mention. 2 deaths from this brand within a year. Go for WD Red Pro or 7200rpm based surveillance HDD.
*
Thanks. Regarding the HDD, I noticed the 4TB version for the WD Red Pro is the same price as the WD Black. Both have 5 years of warranty... Which would be better? I'll be more precise with my usage. I'm only storing camera raw files in the HDD which I may or may not access the files. If I do, it might only be a few times a year. So it's mainly just storing them there. Most importantly is the reliability as I do not want the drives to fail in 5-7 years..

Due to the price of the pro version (price of 1 Pro hdd =2 non pro) , I'm considering the option of getting dual 4tb drives (non pro version) and have them store the same files. At least if one drive fails, I still have the other..

I'm looking at getting a new PSU. Initially I thought of getting the EVGA G+ 750W for around RM4XX but I realised that there is no zero rpm mode.

Currently looking at the Corsair RM750/750x/750i or the HX750w for RM5XX? hmm.gif

Budget is around RM500-600 so might as well get the highest wattage possible even though my system is only consuming less than 500W. Currently with a i5-3450 + GTX1060 3GB and a 500W PSU but will upgrade to probably a Ryzen 4000 series CPU (RM1.3-1.5k ish) and a beefier GPU maybe.

You wouldn't go wrong with the Corsair RM/HX models. They are very good units. Personally using RM750x and very happy with its performance.

QUOTE(lolzcalvin @ Jan 15 2020, 10:36 AM)
probably get the RM/RMi one, because gold PSUs in reality has only about 1-2% less efficient than platinum PSUs. really makes no difference.
i'd suggest you to get RM850x (2018 ver)/RM850 (2019 ver) though.
*
Thanks. Just wondering how do u know which is 2018 or 2019 version?

I'm currently looking at one RM750i on lazada which is surprisingly cheaper than the RM750x

https://s.lazada.com.my/s.Zyijn

There was one review on the RM750i from tomshardware which mentioned the PSU only has one EPS connector. Don't understand what this means? Is it referring to a lack of a second cable or there is no second EPS port on the PSU itself?

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/977798...or-old-version/

the review for RM750i is old, isn't it? around 2015.
because for RM750i, it only comes with one CPU connector a.k.a. EPS connector. usually old PSU only come with 1.
some motherboard requires 2 of these connectors so that the CPU is ready for a stable overclock. my motherboard requires 2 EPS connectors.
some PSUs circumvent the problem of redesigning by just adding a some sort of splitter connector for EPS so that the 8-pin CPU socket from the PSU will supply power to 2 8 pin EPS connector and I doubt it's as stable as having dedicated 2 8-pin CPU sockets from the PSU itself.

usually, newer PSUs or high power PSUs will have 2 dedicated sockets for CPU power connection. go and check out RM750x, 2018 version if you insist on needing only 750w, and RM850x 2018 ver if you want to get a 850w one.  the dimension should be the same as newer RM850x.
*
Thanks bro icon_rolleyes.gif

I think I'm going to check out some physical shops for the RM750x/RM850x and hopefully there would be a pic of the psu on the box to ascertain whether it's the new or old version biggrin.gif

SATA power splitter X3 - RM15 with change

Or you can go bigger but 8 or more HDD cases is becoming hard to find.
*
Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm also considering using some components from my existing old pc (bought in 2012) for the NAS PC below. Would they be good enough?

Reusable parts:
CPU: i5-3450 quad core
Mobo: Gigabyte B75M D3V with 1 x SATA 6Gb/s connector and 5 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors
RAM: 16GB DDR3
PSU: FSP Hexa 500W

Looking to buy:
1) HDD
2) Case

Yes. You have to use Windows software though. Under Storage spaces.

Right now. I can only see Fractal Design Define R6 and R7 on sale for 6 or more HDD case. I happen to have Cooler Master Centurion 5 II collecting dust. Can fit 5 HDD. Can covert 5.25" bays for additional HDDs.

And this thing if you can find it in stock.

Thanks. Why only windows though?

I'm thinking of using either Freenas or unraided on the DIY NAS setup. I think it's not recommended to use Windows for NAS right?

Im actually using a fractal R6 right now haha. I think I'll start with 4 bays first and see how it develops. In the future all I need is to get another casing for more HDDs only right?

Is it worthwhile waiting for PCIE 5.0 and DDR5 memory next year to build a PC system also given that AM4 socket will also be replaced soon.

Aiming for the PC to last 7-9 years until the next major upgrade.

Budget let's say around RM5k +-
Usage: Nothing intensive for now but might be more in the future. Currently the usual browsing, light gaming but may play AAA titles in the future like Harry Potter, occasional picture editing, watching youtube, etc. I'm currently using a 1080p monitor but will very likely upgrade to a 1440p or 4k monitor in the future.

Parts to purchase: CPU, motherboard, SSD, Ram, Windows 11.
Parts to reuse: GTX1060 3GB, Corsair HX750 PSU, Fractal Define R6 casing

Any comments on the build below? Prices from shopee preferred/mall. Do let me know if you can find cheaper prices.

CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X - RM1887
Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS - RM1698
SSD: Kingston KC3000 2TB SSD PCEI 4.0 speed - RM825
RAM: Kingston Fury RGB 16GBX2 - RM719
Windows 11 - RM479

Total: RM5,608

Some comments:
CPU: I read that RAW picture editing may benefit from higher clock speed.
Motherboard: I would prefer to have PCIE 5.0 express slot and M2 SSD 5.0 speed for future proofing. I plan to use the PC for 8-10 years. I also read about USB 4.0 support which can be found in ASUS' motherboard. I think this may be useful for charging the phone or data transfer?

There is a cheaper Asus B650E-F Gaming WIFI, around RM200 cheaper than the X670E but I lose USB4.0 support. Is this something I could look into as I think the RGB is aesthetically nice haha.

Years down the road, I may learn how to OC if I find the PC getting slow.

Questions:
1) Which platform changes socket less frequently? I would hate it that if I want to get a better CPU, I have to get a new motherboard as well due to the change in socket.
2) How good are the built in wifi for motherboard these days? Or a PCIE Wifi is still recommended? I'm looking at the ASUS AX58BT
3) Would it be cheaper to purchase a Windows 10 and get a free upgrade (if any) to W11 instead of buying W11?
4) USB 4.0 useful to have?

8-10 years... No one is future proof on socket. AMD will have better second hand CPUs. Maybe Intel could make another Sandy Bridge and leave AMD in the dust again.
I don't use wifi, no idea.
Windows? Shopee is only a few bucks.
USB 4.0 will cost a bomb for now....
*
Thanks.

My idea to get a good motherboard is to "future proof" for 8-10 years as I have a bad experience with my current setup. My current mobo doesn't even have a M2 slot and it only has 2 ram slots lol. So I want to get a good mobo so that it is quite upgradeable in future. My current setup is an 11 year old PC.... Intel i5-3450 and a Giga B75M D3V mobo, Samsung 840 Pro 120GB SATA SSD. GPU, PSU and RAM I have upgraded over the years..

The ASUS TUF x670E costs RM1.7k and let's say getting a cheaper B650 board will save me a couple of hundreds which isn't even worth it.

My thinking is get the best mobo and CPU I can afford as it is not easily upgradeable plus I'm just a casual user haha.

QUOTE(chocobo7779 @ Jan 23 2023, 10:31 AM)
For the same price as the CPU it might be better to go for the non-X model, probably cheaper and easier too cool (and if you need more performance there's always the PBO option)

Don't bother with PCIe Gen 5 for now as there are no hardware (or workloads) that even properly utilize PCIe Gen 4, let alone Gen 5, and Gen 5 drives are very expensive for now, along with the fact that even the 4090 only takes a small amount of performance loss with PCIe 2.0 x16 at 4K icon_idea.gif
If that's the case then AM5 might be a good choice due to its socket longevity, but AMD is not obliged to give current 600 series boards the full array of AM5 CPUs (they can always restrict certain CPUs for newer AM5 chipsets, like what nearly happened with Zen 3 on AM4) icon_idea.gif
Considering that most CPUs are practically maxed out from the factory there's very little reason to overclock them anyway unless you like the idea of pumping unreasonable amounts of power onto it sweat.gif
A B650E might not be a bad idea either, but I think the vanilla B650 is an even better choice considering that PCIe 5.0 (or even 4.0) is still at its infancy right now icon_idea.gif
*
Thanks.

So a 7700 with PBO will equal a 7700X in terms of performance?

Does AMD like change socket every 5 years or so? Which means if I want to get a newer CPU 6 years later, it would not be compatible with my AM5 board..

What are your thoughts on the i7-13700K vs 7700 vs 7700K performance 8-10 years down the road? the Intel chip's TDP at max load is like 2x the AMD but I don't benchmark at all, I'm not sure if gaming or RAW picture editing stresses it 100%?

QUOTE(babylon52281 @ Jan 24 2023, 01:00 AM)
RM 5.6k and not even include a GPU? Thats a lot of money for a very poor build. A nonX R7 will perform nearly the same even at OCing, and that Asus mobo is just crazy prices. Get a B650 instead with PCIE 5.0 at SSD interface if you think you will need that speed.
*
I picked an Asus mobo as it has USB4.0 compatibility which I may appreciate in the future haha.

The X670E board @RM1.7k is only like RM700 more expensive than a B650 board which IMHO is totally worth it as I am planning to use it 8-10 years down the road..

QUOTE(myway1985 @ Jan 24 2023, 07:30 PM)
1. not a really good option to go amd now as they hv many software with their 1st gen "new" architecture.
2. kingston fury 5200mhz ddr5 i presume the price u get.. with not really beneficial for u as amd heavy demand the ram to achieve high processor clockspeed..
3. home use need window meh??

intel quild u can get like this

3. If not windows, then get linux??

Hey guys, what is the best bang for buck GPU for RM1,000 ish now? Is it the RX6600?

Trying to minimize cost to play Blue protocol. Benchmark at 1080p I got 6,700 points which is only average.

Looking at other people's benchmark score and hardware, seems like it is more gpu intensive than CPU as I saw someone's 1070Ti scored like 11k points running with a i5-3570

Im running a very old PC (Ivi bridge I5-3450 with a GTX1060 3GB) but due to budget constraints I really don't wanna get a new CPU as well as I would need to spend way more for a new mobo, cpu and ram for now.

Yes, RX 6600. Nothing beat it at this price. I would advise you to save money for 12GB cards though. Games like Hogwarts Legacy already eating more than 8GB at 1080p.

U got 2 choices:
Rx 6600 around 1k which is faster than a 3050
Rx 6650 XT around 1.3k (faster than a 3060, also 20++% faster than 6600)

Actually there's a way for budget gamers:
I3 12100f, a MSI Pro B660m Wifi mobo and 16Gb Ddr4 ram. If u shop online, can be found for less than Rm1.3k for all 3.
Optional up to you: Nvme SSD Kingston KC 3000. abt rm243 for 512 gb and Rm349 for 1Gb

assuming u opt for rx 6600, then the whole upgrade will cost u about Rm2.5K - 2.6k incl. 512 gb Ssd.
Btw, if u had upgrade earlier 2 mths ago, the Rx 6600 is Rm999 (u can choose frm Asus, Asrock, Xfx). All these stocks are gone.
*
Thank you both for the replies. Appreciate it smile.gif

I'll go for the RX6600 then or maybe look around for used GPUs if I'm feeling more adventurous.

If the GPU upgrade alone does not suffice, I'll look into getting a new CPU+Mobo+Ram? smile.gif

As we are on this topic, curious if the Ryzen 5 5600 might be better or the i3 12100? Not sure which camp is more value for money for lower budgets, let's say RM1,600 for CPU+MOBO+32GB RAM? Am looking at the Ryzen 5 5600+ Asus B550M board

i3 level 12100 can oso be paired with much cheaper crappy B660 mobos like Giga B660M DS3H or Asrock HDV since even with PL2 unlocked it will only max turbo to 90W. A 12100+B660M mobo+16GB 3200MHZ RAM could be had for <Rm1000.

But with games coming out so highly unoptimised, I wonder how much longer can such a system still suffice.

Guess what, I decided to use back my 40inch 4k monitor again and it does look gorgeous. Didn't use it previously due to space constraint in my new place.

As such, I am looking to play Blue Protocol at 4k if possible and I have decided to try getting a used GPU under RM2k.

1) How is a RTX3080 at RM1.7-1.8k without warranty? Or a RX 6800XT with warranty at 1.8-2k or a RX6900XT at 2.2k no warranty. These are all used units.
2) I saw a used i7-3770 for RM180, would it be able to reduce the bottleneck vs i5-3450? Worth upgrading to it as it only cost RM180..Really, getting a new CPU now have to buy a new motherboard, ram and SSD which easily cost RM1.5K++. rclxub.gif

My current rig:
40inch 4k VA panel display
I5-3450 Ivy bridge
Gigabyte B75m D3V with pcie 3.0
Palit GTX 1060 3GB
16GB DDR3 Ram
120GB SSD
Corsair HX750 PSU
Fractal design R6 casing
