In malaysia always feel life is on the line.

Either you would be sharing a room , or taking a whole room to yourself.
Transportation won't be a lot if you're close by to your office.

You need at least 6-7k based on all expenses

Assuming 1k for housing and 1k for food (much less if you cook at home) and remaining ~1.5k for other misc expenses you can save quite a bit.
Most companies will provide housing allowance , and it's a conservative amount that I have mentioned.
Always realize one is easily replaceable with other nationalities who will work harder and for less.
