Hi,

My family and relatives likes and eats lot of peanut butter and we use it in lot of things. The problem is that bulk peanut butter like Lady's Choice brand, the kind that comes in 5kg tub/pails is actually not real peanut butter, they call it peanut spread and it has a lot of hydrogenated palm oil or other hydrogenated vegetable oil. This is the same fake stuff that the mamaks use to cheat Indian people like "vegetable ghee" which is actually not ghee made from milk, instead they used the trick which is to hydrogenated the cheapest vegetable oil like palm oil, and make a chemical ghee which is similar to planta and then use colouring to make it look like ghee.

I saw many of the supermarket brands like Lady's Choice, Suzi Wan all use this trick with peanut butter/spread to make more profit, as the peanuts are more expensive than the hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Anyway, because of this I have difficulty finding simple honest peanut butter. End up having to pay like RM20 for 500g like Adam's Peanut Butter or other artisan manufacturer which is all more than RM20 for 500g. So monthly cost is becoming too high.

I would prefer to buy in bulk. Since it can last 6 months. I can consider buying 20kg one shot. I'm hoping you might know where to buy this kind of peanut butter (with no hydrogenated oils) in bulk. Maybe we can group buy if the minimum quantity is higher than 10kg.

Thanks for your reply. I know what you mean but all the brands sold at Tesco are the hydrogenated type. You can see here:

Thanks for your reply. But I wonder if you have actually tried it yourself and did you check it is worth it according to your costs. I have and here are the problems:
1. have to buy the peanuts in bulk. That's not cheap and hard to find the source that is consistent in quality. Typically it is RM10/kg.
2. have to clean the peanuts, get rid of stones, rotten peanuts, aflatoxin mold peanuts
3. have to roast the peanuts
4. have to do first level grind to chop the peanuts finely
5. have to do second level grind to get to butter-like stage
6. have to do full melangeur to get actual peanut butter


Steps 2-6 cost a lot of time, power (for roasting evenly), oil, grinder use. In the end the cost is not worth it. That's why I want to buy from a factory in bulk.

Are you making your own peanut butter, not sure because your reply doesn't seem to say? May I ask what price you get for your peanuts and which variety you are using?

Yes, I already understand that. I'm asking where to buy it in bulk. I'm saying instead of buying one 485g bottle, I want to buy a 5kg pail/tub. That is available for the hydrogenated peanut spread but I am looking for the non-hydrogenated type.

Or maybe worst case, can I buy one carton/box of 10 bottles of 485g? I contacted Smuckers that makes Adam's Natural Peanut Butter but they said they don't export to Malaysia which is weird because I see it in Jaya Grocers. I asked Smuckers and they said they can't verify so there is a possibility what is sold in Malaysia is actually counterfeit Peanut Butter with their label or imported without their knowledge!!

I contacted Jaya Grocers / Trendcell Sdn Bhd and they said they don't distribute in carton meaning I can't buy in bulk from them.

So... that's why I ask here. Unfortunately, so far no one has been able to provide practical help.

Anyway I have done my own pb. Get those deshelled peanuts in bulk. It is dirt cheap. Dry fry in a wok or put them in oven. Take off skin by rubbing them in your palm. Heat up enough of oil to cover the peanuts. Put salt sugar to taste. Blend no need to chop. Store them in tight glass jars. I dont out then in fridge cz cold pb is js not my spoon of pb. Eat them relatively fast else oil turns bad. I will be doing some mix peanuts with brazilian nuts.

So far, I never found anything cheaper than RM9.40/kg and that is for Grade A Indian red skin. Naturally, I don't want to buy grade B or China because of the risk of aflatoxin contamination.

I think my family maybe 2-4 tablespoons per person per day. 20g per tablespoon * 3 spoons * 4 person * 30 days = 7.2kg. So 7.2kg per month. Then sometimes friends come so can easily round up to 8kg per month. Yeah, you can see how the more than RM400/month cost starts to affect me.

The other option is Yogood brand (Shyan Trading from Shah Alam). But I'm very suspicious of them. I contacted them and asked if they have verified they do not use hydrogenated palm oil and their email response was "The manufacturer has informed us that they do not use hydrogenated oils in the peanut butter.". I don't see any separation in their peanut butter and the taste sometimes tastes like peanut spread. So I feel suspicious because even their email response is something like, ah, the manufacturer guy told us no hydrogenated oil, so not our problem. But I feel like since the manufacturer doesn't even have their own brand, they aren't someone who can be trusted 100%.

I used to make both peanut butter and almond butter at home. Here's my video from 2013, I used to make almond butter 50% + dark chocolate 50%. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozhqhv2TT-A The problem is the amount of time it takes and the costs. After about 6 months, my Philips blender/grinder HR2161 broke down. So gone RM350 for that.

I considered buying a Premier table top wet grinder which is what a lot of people use for making cacao (melangeur). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYn6hmelKCE But then I gave up as I lost motivation to spend so much time on making nut butters.
