I've seen people who make peanut butter naturally just take raw peanuts, wash and dry them then put it in a food processor and pulse away till creamy. Since it's natural, maybe you need to keep in the fridge and make batches to last for 2 weeks or so I'm not sure how long it can keep, you can research on this. I think some people keep it for 2 months. But it's important you use a food processor and not a blender and also to not over-pulse the nuts or else its oils will come out and you will get separation. You can try with almond for almond butter, cashews etc aswell.

Hi,

My family and relatives likes and eats lot of peanut butter and we use it in lot of things. The problem is that bulk peanut butter like Lady's Choice brand, the kind that comes in 5kg tub/pails is actually not real peanut butter, they call it peanut spread and it has a lot of hydrogenated palm oil or other hydrogenated vegetable oil. This is the same fake stuff that the mamaks use to cheat Indian people like "vegetable ghee" which is actually not ghee made from milk, instead they used the trick which is to hydrogenated the cheapest vegetable oil like palm oil, and make a chemical ghee which is similar to planta and then use colouring to make it look like ghee.

I saw many of the supermarket brands like Lady's Choice, Suzi Wan all use this trick with peanut butter/spread to make more profit, as the peanuts are more expensive than the hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Anyway, because of this I have difficulty finding simple honest peanut butter. End up having to pay like RM20 for 500g like Adam's Peanut Butter or other artisan manufacturer which is all more than RM20 for 500g. So monthly cost is becoming too high.

I would prefer to buy in bulk. Since it can last 6 months. I can consider buying 20kg one shot. I'm hoping you might know where to buy this kind of peanut butter (with no hydrogenated oils) in bulk. Maybe we can group buy if the minimum quantity is higher than 10kg.

Thanks!

Honestly, I think RM20 range for 500g isn't a bad price for natural peanut butter. If you look at the ones with all the additives in store is already RM11-13 for for ladies choice 500g and around RM17 for skippy 500g. Maybe you can contact Adam's Peanut Butter if they ship in carton or try asking around for those artisan homemade peanut butters if they can produce in bulk for u. In Malaysia our choices of natural peanut butter is downright limited, I've done my fair share looking previously few years back for peanut butters without any additives but it's so hard to find especially in Penang or if i managed to find the price is sky high at about RM30-40. Price wise, I don't think you can save much if you want the good stuff but you can definitely find ways to get it in bulk just so you dont need to make peanut butter runs everytime. On a side note, just how much peanut butter does your household go through every month? Sounds like alot.

I contacted Smuckers that makes Adam's Natural Peanut Butter but they said they don't export to Malaysia which is weird because I see it in Jaya Grocers. I asked Smuckers and they said they can't verify so there is a possibility what is sold in Malaysia is actually counterfeit Adam's Peanut Butter with their label or imported without the knowledge of Smuckers Corp!!

I also contacted Jaya Grocers / Trendcell Sdn Bhd and they said they don't distribute Adam's Peanut Butter in carton meaning I can't buy in bulk from them.

I think my family maybe 2-4 tablespoons per person per day. 20g per tablespoon * 3 spoons * 4 person * 30 days = 7.2kg. So 7.2kg per month. Then sometimes friends come so can easily round up to 8kg per month. Yeah, you can see how the more than RM400/month cost starts to affect me.

The other option is Yogood brand (Shyan Trading from Shah Alam). But I'm very suspicious of them. I contacted them and asked if they have verified they do not use hydrogenated palm oil and their email response was "The manufacturer has informed us that they do not use hydrogenated oils in the peanut butter.". I don't see any separation in their peanut butter and the taste sometimes tastes like peanut spread. So I feel suspicious because even their email response is something like, ah, the manufacturer guy told us no hydrogenated oil, so not our problem. But I feel like since the manufacturer doesn't even have their own brand, they aren't someone who can be trusted 100%.

That's quite alot of peanut butter consumption per person to be honest. I mean given that your family also consumes other fat sources in a day i.e oils in prepared food, snacks etc. It's quite unhealthy to overeat on fats so even if you're looking for the best quality it kind of defeats the health reasoning at the end of the day. 1-2 tbsp is fine for average people but 3-4 sounds abit much if you're consuming a regular diet with other fats. One of the ways you can consider is to limit that much intake of peanut butter so your cost isnt sky high just on a peanut butter. On a side note, there's this powdered peanut butter called PB2 which I think isn't available here locally but I believe but you can ship from overseas websites such as iherb, their direct site or something. It doesnt contain any oils because it's powdered form, people mainly use it for baking or adding to drink etc but i've also seen some mix it with liquids and use it as a spread. You can look into this and see if it helps coz i'm not exactly sure how much it costs.
