It's hit or miss. Even if you use the Developer Mode hack, not every app can be installed on an add on drive.

Heck, not even all added microsd or usb drive can be detected. It needs to be FAT32 specifically, and even then Chromecast seems to have a hard time detecting some. I've tested various microsd card a few weeks back, and only my 8gb and 16gb card were detected properly. My 32gb one were detected, but failed when trying to format it as an internal storage, and even then it took about 30 minutes before it was even shown in the storage menu

Also as an added bonus, Chromecast will fail to detect your USB Hub if you soft reset it (go to menu->reset) or using the power button. A hard power off is the only option if you are using a USB hub :V

So yeah, the KM2 (or if you don't have Netflix like me, the new KM7 with AV1 decoding) are better in this price range
*
I see, only my kodi app that’s usually consume extra storage. Fortunately database cache/thumbnails is on nas with mysql setup.

Thanks for the extra info on the usb hub, not usually highlighted in other reviews

Gotta say though I’ve rarely download stuff like before since got fiber. Using kodi with certain addon can stream 30-40gb files smoothly just makes playing latest movies a lot easier than before 😅

I am not up to date on tv box now. Appreciate feedback from friends here on tv box vs smart tv. In the past, could not install your apps. Heard now smart tv allows that. What are the major pros and cons now in that 2 systems?

Need to know for my next upgrade.

Thanks.
*
Can’t install apps? It’s android underneath you can sideload anything unlike apple tv

For smart tv, pick android tv platform, not one of those webos by lg/samsung that only limits to built in store apps.

Thanks.

The other concern is OS & firmware update. Some brands stop supporting that after 2-3 years.

Due to apps installation constraints, best to avoid, LG, SS? True that Sony allows free apps?
*
All those brands listed got android tv, just certain tv model got their proprietary tv os. Just be sure to check the specification

As for the update, hard to tell with android defragmentation

Easier to upgrade/buy android tv stick with latest os in the long run compared to smart tv

One thing i do like about smart tv with android tv platform is can get cctv feeds alert/doorbell/alarm natively whenever you’re watching something. With android tv stick, need to change to hdmi input first

Hi guys , how do you connect your android tv box when stay at hotel?
I know can just connect to phone hotspot or bring travel router, but I wanna avoid this and just connect directly.
Firetv stick got some captive portal built in with fire os so you can just login directly but not the same for android tv.

Someone suggested to use puffin tv browser, but nothing pops up for password input. Any other ideas?

Hey guys, has anyone heard or used Walmart's Android TV?
onn. TV Stick and TV Box
TV stick seems to be about rm133 on shopee

Also WTA, i got 2 TVs currently, one old samsung 1080p and sony bravia 4k 2015

samsung tv im using mi box s, but not sure if need to upgrade or not
bravia has built in android tv, but its super laggy nowadays

My use is netflix, youtube, disney+ hbo max and VPN which runs on boot + split tunnel, so i can open disney+ and hbo max without needing to connect to vpn 1st

Both TVs works fine no issues so far, but wondering if I should upgrade the mibox for the samsung tv and maybe buy mecool km2 for the sony TV

Thanks!
*
I'm also using the walmart onn 4k version, fells even faster than fire tv sticks and definitely the mibox s
Mostly using it for kodi, and the usual streaming service
The onn remote utilize hdmi cec and ir to control your devices. It can control the volume my sony receiver, but not able to power on/off which is odd since my fire stick can control both. Still searching how to get it working

How do you configure the split tunnel? Is it by selective device or traffic

Oh that's great to hear. The box seems to cost around RM180 which is much cheaper than mibox s, but curious if its better than kemool km2

Split tunnel i configure via app, my vpn allows me to select what app to only go through VPN, so i set it for Disney+ and HBO MAX, the rest no vpn.
*
Which vpn you're using bro?
It's definitely the cheapest certified tv stick out there if you get directly from walmart with good performance post black friday/cyber monday sales

Im still living in MY tho, so dont think their sales affect us that much  sweat.gif

Nice, easy for the kids or parents so need to toggle each time
Never tried WeVPN yet, works for netflix region change?

i know but the thing is, i dont really like the specs. 1gb ram? 8gb rom? in 2021?  laugh.gif And its not cheap either. Thats why i prefer some other box.
*
8gb storage is the norm since all these manufacturers following google reference or something

Tivo 4k, onn 4k player

Should be sufficient, chipset Amlogic S905Y2 similar to chromecast with google tv.

If you need more internal storage, might need to use otg cable or get mecool ones

I got mibox s too, i do feel like the android stick i mentioned previously faster and snappier than mibox s especially with kodi. Granted it’s old spec but still gets the job done

Yes but now many are complaining on Reddit that the remote constantly unpairing itself

Walmart acknoledged the issue but yet to have any fix up to now

So I am reconsidering it as it is gonna be painful if remote not working
*
Hermm, I never had that issue with remote unpairing itself

Wow what a hobby to pass time during MCO!

Since alucard89 mentioned his unit is fine I might still go for ONN box

Mainly those who complained said it could be resolved by placing an icebag onto the box so most probably it was due to chip overheat or hardward issue by batch
Bro mind to help me the following?

1. How long have you been using this ONN ATV box and how many hours do you stream typically?
2. General review, mainly on the cons that you had faced

Thanks in advance! rclxm9.gif
*
Got it since dec last year
Usually just open it up whenever new movies out or for my weekly tv shows
But lately just open it up for my son didi n friends video playlist

So far all good, just 1 minor issue to control the power for my really old sony sound system. I can control the volume just fine but not powering it on/off which is something firetv 4k and tivo 4k can do just fine.

Other not support dolby atmos/vision, it can pretty much play anything you throw at it. Technicallly the hardware can support but something about them not paying extra for those and keep the price low

if you’re in the mood for tweaking the box (root etc), there’s a dedicated thread at xda

https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unoffici...evices.4313743/

Storage not really an issue if you just use the usual streaming service. If you use kodi and add some custom skins and streaming addon, might need to do some regular housekeeping to clear the cache or logs

Thanks for the info bro!

My usage will be on Disney+ Hotstar, Youtube and miracast for TVB drama only, and maybe Netflix in the future

You tried casting? How was it?

Since Disney+ Hotstar does not support Dolby Atmos so it doesn't matter

On ther emote controlling for other devices I am fine as long as it has no issue controlling the tv box

I am using my unifi remote for my white STB and TV, no other AV devices

Might explore on VPN on the box later on as it would be good for some georestricted youtube videos

And lastly, do you have the link where you bought it?

Thanks again!
*
I don’t really do casting, but no issues
With kodi, pretty much everything is there lol

Surfshark is pretty good choice, can select apps that goes thru vpn connection so others still on msian ip

From walmart site, use forwarder like buyandship.
If too much trouble like your orders getting cancelled then better just order from shopee

btw, try add this for your ambient tv back light, I’m just missing the power supply to get this up and running 😅

Thanks for the feedback

linkinstreet alucard89

After a little digging I came to this article

Apparently the fix for ther emote unpairing itself issue was released

https://9to5google.com/2021/09/11/walmart-o...te-august-2021/

Security Patch Level Update (August 2021)
Upgrade of Remote Control Unit (RCU) FW v1.44
Fix for the system hang issue
Fix for the RCU disconnect issue
Fix for auto language change issue
Fix for Wi-Fi WPA2 connection issue

I am pretty much convinced that this will be a good buy

Will just get it from Shopee because with forwarder and who knows got taxed later it might come to the same amount plus warranty

Next after getting the box will be research on kodi thumbup.gif
*
Oh that issue was already fixed by the time i bought it

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask
Recently I just bought the Xiaomi TV. It is the Xiaomi OS version
And I sideloaded a few apps for movies. End up it keep lagging and buffering. Anyone know what the issue ?
Been tested for YouTube, it is smooth and no issue , shouldn't be my internet
Else I will get a TV box.
Thanks
*
Your streaming apps sources are questionable unless it’s from legit ones, you could have 1gbps and still buffering

Hi guys, just got a new android tv to replace my plasma.
Gotta ask about storage expension, my philips 65PUT7906 only has usb 2.0 port it seems. I’m wondering if i add external storage to install apps etc.
Would it affect the system like making it slower in the long run or anything else to expect

u got many apps for android tv?
nah... most of the apps except game need large space
of coz nobody complaints bigger storage.

the only thing i think used up alot of space is the game, rom or media content {download netflix?)....
or actualy media files which u can host it in some file server.
how about router usb for media server?
*
Just for kodi, the library file cache gets bigger over time since always scraping movies & tv shows that i grabbed

well that suck...
no longer t... or very seldom ever since using netflix n iqiyi nowadays
previously t, i steam it to memory and never write to disk

fyi usb2 hv around 40MBps read speed barely enuf for 4k.
but based on my experience, it will lag coz the actual read speed may varied.
if u want better performance for usb2, i recommend you use h265.
lower bitrate and file size.
*
No, I’m not using usb to stream the file, just from my nas
I’m just curious about expanding the android tv storage with usb and if slows down app perfomance like kodi bound to have lots of movies/fanart from library scraping

alucard89 Does your Onn remote need to be paired almost everytime you launch the box after like turning it off overnight

And how about connecting to wifi?

Mine after a night off, 50% of the time it will ask for remote pairing and wifi is not connected, but the wifi issue can be solved by toggling wifi on / off
*
Nope, just the first initial setup
Maybe try updating to latest firmware

Tivo 4k for that dolby vision/atmos support
Onn 4k if you don’t really care for those
