Hi folks, general question here.
I've read some threads and many comments around this sub forum about how they lost money, got poor returns on their unit trusts, and telling others to completely avoid UTs. Would it be safe to assume these were people who invested in UTs via agents (who only sold poor funds and/or just follow what their agents say), and not those who carefully studied and DIY their investing like us on FSM? I would think that having FSM where we can study all the funds + proper self learning would avoid such negative results. |

QUOTE(yklooi @ May 16 2020, 11:39 AM) one can also "kena" hit.....even to those who carefully studied and DIY their investing like us on FSM, where we can study all the funds + proper self learning...there is no guaranteed we would avoid negative results. yup of course it is not 100% fail safe, but it seems that others are getting 100% negative results |

QUOTE(WhitE LighteR @ May 16 2020, 11:55 AM) and taxes QUOTE(tadashi987 @ May 16 2020, 12:07 PM) part of but not all, it might include ones who invest less than 1-2 years but already comparing the return rate with EPF annual dividend. Yup, I'm thinking people who got burned in UT are these typessomehow i felt unit trust reputation is bad because: 1) non knowledgeable sales, they dunno, or they don't even care if your monies is invested in the right place 2) investor's vision of horizon is not long enough, it doesn't make sense to compare performance of unit trust fund with EPF dividend in horizon of few months, one or two years. 3) investor themselves dunno what are they investing in, equities? fixed income? mix asset? it involves works of study and research, so the says of "if you dunno what are you investing, might as well just put inside EPF for safe annual 5% isnt it?" it does make sense. |

Hi all, I was just reading another thread here where someone said "unit trust is useless with all the sales charges and management fees" and would rather invest in bonds, ETF, etc.
What are your thoughts on this? |

QUOTE(YoungMan @ Jun 27 2021, 10:16 AM) And what are your thoughts on this? I have a mix of UT, stocks, EPF self contribution and stashaway. I just thought the blanket statement that UTs are "useless" because of the fees was disagreeableTo me it depends on you as an investor to choose which root to go. kabal82, ryse_photo, and 2 others liked this post

General unit trust question, why do different sources report different fund performance figures? Who actually has the "most accurate" data? Example below for Principal Greater China Equity Fund. Attached thumbnail(s) onthefly liked this post

Realised how expensive it is to buy through FSM, wondering if I should make the jump to something like Syfe or something |

I've been looking at expanding/diversifying/adjusting my FSM portfolio and was looking at the following sectors:
1. Europe (TA European Equity Fund) Since this is a feeder fund to european CIS's, it should be pretty alright to go ahead? Fund factsheet 2. Local/ASEAN Small cap (KAF Vision / United ASEAN Discovery Fund) I noticed quite a fair number of the holding stocks are those whose prices have been constantly declining over the years, yet the funds still report good returns over the years. Anyone here holding either of these funds? 3. India (Manulife India Equity Fund) Been reading mixed news/articles about India being the next economy superpower, yet also many uncertainties due to after effects of covid |

QUOTE(pinksapphire @ Feb 28 2022, 04:56 PM) Hey guys, general question here, haven't visited for quite a while. How's FSM doing? Still many staying invested or maybe going in more during these times of uncertainty? How about dividend stocks & robo-ETF?I honestly don't know what to do for investment anymore. It's like, nothing's certain except FD, lol QUOTE(sgh @ Feb 28 2022, 05:27 PM) Now is bear market times. It is good for those who have not experienced before to finally experience it in one whole investment journey. Once out of bear run, hopefully one become a seasoned and veteran investor. Yeah, just only realised today that my UTs had been in decline, some started as early as beginning of 2021 while others around mid-end 2021. |

QUOTE(xander83 @ Mar 27 2022, 10:11 PM) Website. yeah maybe its just maintenance stuffNow then, I was reviewing my portfolio as everyone is hotly discussing China related funds. I realised I have 3 funds which are China-heavy: Principal Greater China Equity Fund: -2.76% to date Principal Asia Pacific Dynamic Income Fund: +12.47% to date Affin Hwang Select Asia (Ex Japan) Opportunity Fund: -4.83% to date I think it would make sense to drop one or two of these funds right? Maybe not now but later when they recover? |

has anyone here used FSM to go into US ETFs?
Yes i know the fees are high but I'm attracted to the idea that I can hold different investment vehicles on one platform |

I got this email today:
Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for investing with FSMOne. We have been informed by Affin Hwang Asset Management Berhad (“AHAM”) that they intent to change the distribution policy of Affin Hwang Select SGD Income Fund (the “Fund”) to allow the Fund to declare income distribution out of its capital. Currently, distribution of income by the Fund can only be made from realised gains or realised income. The proposed change would allow the Fund the ability to distribute income on a quarterly basis in accordance with its distribution policy. While AHAM intend to continue declaring distribution from the Fund’s realised gains and / or income, the ability to declare distribution out of the Fund’s capital would enable the Fund to better meet its objective of providing investors with regular income distributions, even when the Fund has insufficient realised gains and / or income to do so. I'm not very sure but this doesnt sound like a good idea....? |

QUOTE(bcombat @ Aug 5 2022, 07:07 PM) tax auto deducted from dividend payout before distributing to investor? don’t tell me I have to declare this in tax return form. QUOTE(lee82gx @ Aug 5 2022, 08:27 PM) Yes. But when you declare it in return it is to “claim” some back as it is taxed at max rate while you possibly do not belong in that bracket eventually. I think this helps make it clear:In the end, when the public listed company declares a dividend, they need to pay tax first on nett profit and then after you as shareholder get it, you are taxed again. This is why I never favour dividends for growth stocks personally. Whatever MUM says, is just telling u above in a more formal way. Attached thumbnail(s) |
