Hi, a question i have been wondering. Let say, back then, 4 years ago, i bought a 2nd hand car at RM 40,000 from a dealer. and, today, i wish to trade in for either brand new car / second hand car. How the trade in price will likely be? my concern is, will they value it worse than trade in first hand car? Since, the vehicle experienced 2 owners.

2nd hand value... not fixed... really down to condition of the car, what the buyer is willing to pay and what the seller is willing to let it go for.....
number of owners.... well too many isnt a good sign cause it could point to a problematic car BUT it really depends on how long each owner kept it and its pattern as well. For example i might not want a car that has been suddenly changing hands frequently recently, but im fine if it wasa car kept for a while by each owner. Sometimes its unavoidable that cars have many owners.

2nd hand car doesn't work like that
its more like this
New (1st owner)
2nd hand (2nd owner)
2nd hand (3rd owner)
2nd hand (4th owner)
here in malaysia, the most important thing regarding the car resale value are the BRAND itself, year or make and condition
40k secondhand Honda & Toyota back in 2015 would definitely have a higher RV compared to 40k Proton, Perodua of 2015

Easiest way to gauge the 'market value' of your car is to pay a visit to either a bank(for loan amount available) or your car insurance company. Whatever figure given by either will be the baseline of what's your car's worth. Applicable to most typical cars in the market with exception to sports car(value is subjective to demand) lol.

Hijacking the topic... is it a normal practice to trade-in different brand car to dealer? Eg. Perodua car trade-in with Proton dealer to buy new Proton car?

Unfortunately I can tell you, they will low ball your car like nobody's business! So don't expect the price they offer will be even close to the normal market value, doesn't really matter much first hand or subsequent owners, that's how used car business wants to make as much money as they can. They can low ball you as much as 30-40% or even more below market price, depending on what car you want to sell. So the key is to just focus on the delta price that you need to top up, as long as you can nego for that delta amount to be reasonable for you then can go ahead with the deal but you also have to bargain hard and don't hesitate to low ball them as well coz used car dealers make a lot of money like that.

Yeah... that is how the industry is making the money ~ no clear guideline of any sort, really willing buyer willing seller basis ~
