i agree... my uni eliminate a lof of students each samester... a fair chance for every one haha
*
that is a stupid, wasteful and inefficient way of training doctors, which is a very expensive process.......a failed student means a wasted place in that cohort......

it only works in msia where there is private for-profit medical schools, whose main reason is to make money, so will take money from any wannabe doctor who wants to give it a try.......after all it's just someone's daddy's money, or scholarship...........dang, that's our tax money!!!

at least imu filters them strictly (21% fails first year), mainly because they cannot play-play.....the pms are strict in their required standards......

lots of med schools are lax, and passes people easily.........that is the issue.....people who has no business studying medicine graduates as doctors......... shocking.gif.......a situation that happens mainly in 3rd world countries.......

if u said it is wasteful... den it is being waste by the student himself... the student are not hardworking enough...that is why the school expel them.

my uni believe that doctors need not to be smart... but hardworking...
so if u not smart enought... i mean not all As in STPM they also accept u..
but minimum requirement is all B la...

yo my school dont pass people easily u kno... if u have attitude problem, they also will expel u...
if u dont perform well in ur presantation... the lecturer will remember that... and u probably in the "to be expel" list...
so it is not easy being in the medical school...
*
i am having serious doubts about this med school........where did you say you are studying again?.....

FIRST AND FOREMOST criteria for selection into med school, in any well managed future doctor training system (ie usually public funded med schools eg uk, oz) is that the candidate MUST be smart......certainly in the top 5% of the cohort........there are no shortage of these students.......top 5% of a msian cohort (150k or so) is 7500 students.......even if say 80% have no interest in medicine or arts stream, that is still 1500 students to choose from........no need to look at those with BBB, which will be in the 85% percentile (ie top 15%).........

incorrect......md is just the way some med schools try to be different..... nothing to do with 4 or 5 years courses......and nothing to do with the american md system.....in msian context there is no difference between the two.....

north american md system is a Graduate programme.......ie ALL med students must have a first degree first.....and is 4 years......

local med schools are all undergraduate programmes and follows the british system, 5 years.....the division between preclinical and clinical has blurred with the intergrated syllabus of most med schools.....clinical exposure begins in the first year....

oz has a mixture of both systems, half being undergraduate entry and 5-6 years, and half postgraduate entry for 4 years.....

indonesia med schools are a mixed bag......form the good to the very bad......and the training level in many are only at slightly better than that of medical assistants in msia........

incorrect again....the british md is a post basic med degree qualification, usually based of research. it is not recognised for practice registration nor as specialist qualification.....therefore complete different from the north american md, which is a basic medical degree equivalent to the mbbs/mbchb......

I repeat, in the context of msian medical education the mbbs and md are the same......

it is interesting to note that graduate entry med school in oz also give the mbbs, although it will be the graduant's 2nd degree......

Wow, is this the attitude of a Melbourbe U student?? Wow, something went wrong in the selection of students man. I thought students in Melbourne U are mostly humble and hardworking bunch, instead of egoistic idiot like you (i personally know a few people from medical course in melbourne U, mostly your seniors, that is if you are really from melbourne U wink.gif )

Well, say all you want about Manipal, UM or other local Us. In the end, all of us will be doctors. And once i obtained MRCP or other specialist degree, I'll be recognized worldwide.

Btw, entering medical course in local Us for non-bumi is even harder than entering melbourne U.<removed>
*
eh........not quite.......

registration to practice in a country depends on the primary qualification.........not the subsequent postgraduate qualifications........

and in uk, the mrcp is an ENTRANCE qualification, ie you are ready to enter into advanced specialist training........at the current moment, to qualify for consultant grade jobs, you need the cst........

So that means i can't work in eg Singapore even though i have obtained MRCP?
*
sorry, i have not been keeping track of who is where.......which uni are you in now?

the only 2 msian med schools recognised by spore at the moment are um and ukm....

for indian schools, they are:

All-India Institute of Medical Sciences

Christian Medical College, Vellore

Armed Forces Medical College, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences

Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Pondicherry University

Lady Hardinge Medical College (New Delhi), University of Delhi

Grant Medical College (Mumbai), Maharashtra University of Health Sciences

St. John's Medical College (Bangalore), Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences

Madras Medical College (Chennai), Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University

as you can see, manipal is not in the list.

I am from Manipal.
So even after i have obtained MRCP, i can't work in Singapore?
*
i thought so........you are from manipal.......

not in the recognised list, which means you cannot register with the smc and practice....

however, there are special provisions for doctors who are world leaders in their area, where special consideration can be given.

that is the problem, many medical students (and prospective students and their parents) are not aware of the very strict conditions for registration to practice, particularly in the 1st world countries.

the reason is pretty simple........unlike these 1st world countries which chooses their med students very carefully, most 3rd world countries (including msia) have a defective med education system.....and hence there is no consistency in the quality and the teaching in many med schools.......

there is a back door though in some 1st world countries......you can sit for qualifying exams, and if you prove yourself sufficiently competent, you can then be registered......this is the case in usa and oz.....

So by obtaining MRCP is still not competent enough for you?
*
eh........not me.......in the case of you specific inquiry, the singapore medical council......

the mrcp is recognised as a specialist qualification, however.......although, like i said, in uk, it is an entrance qualification, and in spore, you still need the fams to be registered as a specialist.......

i am just letting you know the facts.....i didn't invent them.......the respective medical councils did.....

since you only intend to practice in msia, after mrcp, you need to work for 18mths before being gazetted as a general medical specialist......

for subspecialisation, the pathways differ between disciplines, but it usually means another 3-4 years of training.......possibly 1 year of fellowship overseas......(some are research only, so needs no registration, some will be given limited registration to work, tied to a specific hospital only)

for appointment to a private hospital, they usually now requires at least 5 years post mrcp.........

So let's say if i want to work overseas, i have to first passed the respective licensing exam right? Just wondering.
*
yes........if you primary qualification is not recogised in that country........

no need, if it is recognised.....so zltan from melb u can find a job in spore/oz/nz/uk and just register......

however he will still need to sit for the usmle if he wants to go to work in the us.......usa does NOT recognise any med degree other than their own.........

Looks like every tom d*** and harry is chasing for an MD. Still, I'd suggest STPM/A-Levels. It'll give you more options.

Scared that you can't score enough A's in STPM? Then you don't deserve to study medicine after all.
*
since when has that been a determining factor on who becomes a doctor in msia?

Pardon me, I forgot about the Malaysian constitution. And moolah too.
*
contrary to what may have been oft quoted in the official media, there is nothing in the constitution that specifically mandated the skewed education selection process currently practised in msia.......

moolah, on the other hand, has always been able to buy almost everything.......

Try the following website:
http://www.faimer.org/orgs.html
*
the entry on msia is obviously wrong......the link is to the mma.......and it was stated as voluntary registration......

the correct body is the mmc, the link of which should be http://www.mmc.gov.my/v1/.........

and registration is mandatory....

they only reason why these med school will take in students, is they want your money.....and they don't particularly care how the product will be, since none will ever stay back to work and treat russian people.........the spectrum of students taken in is wide, from the very good to the very poor.......and it is widely known that pass marks can be easily arranged in exams......and they take in people from spm, which is really a no no........

Actually my counsin has pretty good results and she can afford to go to AUS/ UK. I guess AUS/ UK would be a much better choice then?
*
even if you have the rm1mil or so required, it is very difficult to get into oz med schools, due to the few places available for international students (half the med schools are graduate programme)(>ter98 needed)........it is easier to get into british or irish med schools, as there are a lot more places available (AAB will get you into lower tier med schools).........

the reason why these countries are so strict in the selection process is because a substantial portion of these students stay back, and settle in these countries, and thus they are actually training doctors for their own use, but financied by the students themselves.........

that is why people choose to go elsewhere like russia, india, indon etc......easier to get in......

Specialists in HTAA where I am currently posted at always condemns russian and ukrainian grads regardless wtr they were JPA scholars or self sponsored. So be ready to be the target of prejudice when u start working.. Personally I dont think its fair cause one of the houseman I know who graduated in Russia said that they were not allowed to do any procedures and only got to do very limited amount pf practice on their physical examinations which is why they are less competent as compared to their peers.. The specialists all just jump into the conclusion that they are of bad quality..Kesian..
*
less competent means bad quality........no?

poor training also means bad quality.......

sometimes, it gets so bad, it's almost like being a medical school all over again, having to teach these 'doctors' from scratch......things they should have learnt in the early years of med school........that is just NOT acceptable......they are supposed to provide service, NOT get retrained after the med school failed their job.......
