You are right. I have never seen anyone actually compare the signature. In fact, there was one time I was charged even though I didn't sign on the credit card slip. The merchant swiped twice thinking that the first one didn't go through as there was no slip coming out from the machine. Second time it did and I signed only on one slip. But it turned out that the first swipe was indeed successful and I was charged twice. Had to reason with the bank how they could release the claim even though there was no signature. Hence, this shows to me that signature is just really a formality.

Just don't know how all these work for US tourists who use their credit cards here or Malaysian tourists who use their credit cards there.
