hi everyone.
i'm new to DSLR. Using nikon d40.

how do i focus on everything in the frame?
I mean for instance my friend is standing in front of the mountain for example.
I want to focus on my friend and the mountain as well.

Now, if i auto-focus, i can only focus on my friend, mountain is blur
OR
focus on mountain, my friend is blur.

Please help. i know this should be really simple for u guys.
thank you.

To make life easier, use the auto landscape function...

If not use Av mode, set it to f/8.0 and above. U should be able to get what u want.

hmmm...i'm confused. some of you say use big aperture number. but isn't f/8 or f/11 small? i mean big is like f/36. or is it the other way?

I suppose the misunderstanding is due to the terms used here. Typically, to avoid confusion, I would say:
- LARGE aperture, SMALL f-number (f/1.4)
- SMALL aperture, BIG f-number (f/16)

You must be referring to the 4 standard exposure modes on a Nikon SLR:

M
- Manual, you can control both shutter speed and aperture f-number

S
- Shutter priority, you control the shutter speed, the camera chooses a suitable aperture f-number

A
- Aperture priority, you control the aperture f-number, the camera chooses a suitable shutter speed

P
- Programmed, the camera chooses a suitable shutter speed AND aperture f-number

I prefer to refer to them as bright aperture (f1.4) and dark aperture (f32).

Big number could mean F32 or F/1.4 (whether you like to type the / or not). 1/1.4 > 1/32 but people get confused when 32 > 1.4.

Canon has an A-Dep mode which chooses a dark aperture where every AF point in focus. *runs*

i see...
but should I focus on the person or the mountain?
or use which focus mode?

and if i do focus on the person, the big aperture number will prevent it from 'blurring' the mountain?

what do you guys use to handle this format? my photoshop can't open them.
