They do work on shifts but there is a strict limit on the number of hours they can work at one go. You don't want a tired or sleepy pilot

One thing people haven't mentioned is the effect on family life. I have an uncle who's in the flight crew, he is away for a days at a time. It does affect you if you have family and children so the pay does something to compensate for it.

Finally there's the risk factor that people have mentioned. The pilot is responsible for the whole plane. If the pilot screws up, even if nobody dies etc, he/she could be grounded for life, never to fly again.
