hi all,

i'm seriously thinking of getting the SZ48, but my other options are the FE48 or the Dell XPS M1210. Does anyone have any feedback on these models?

Also, would it be better to get it at PC Fair or should i just head over to Sony Style KLCC?

cheers.

SZ48 is the ultimate mobility and FE48 is a desktop replacement, u cant really compare both unless u have a preference
*
i prefer mobility (i.e. something real small and light). i've been lugging around those Dell Inspiron desktop replacement notebooks for too long. my shoulder is killing me. sweat.gif

deathbringer:
FE = less batt life, SZ = more mobility, long batt life etc. and dell, not sure that one. but the laptop is decent too since the XPS is known to be high in quality.
*
the only difference i noticed between the FE and the SZ is a larger screen and slightly better graphics chipset for the FE. but that thing is huge compared to the SZ.

EDIT: oh yeah, the FE48 is cheaper than the SZ48. just noticed that.

QUOTE(ezinger @ Apr 9 2007, 08:37 PM)
but SZ has by far better design :]

does the XPS has a fingerprint reader?
*
does anyone actually use the fingerprint reader on the SZ?

anyways, thanks to everyone for the feedbacks. btw, should i get it from PC Fair or Sony Style? more freebies at PC Fair???

just wanna ask....when the Geforce Go 8000 series is released, can our laptops (those with Nvidia's Geforce Go 7000 series chipset) be upgraded to the newer chipsets?

That means maximum is 2G dual channel or 1G dual channel? (cause take up 2 ram slot dy)
*
1gb per slot. so with 2 slots filled, it'll be 2gbs, running in dual channel.

i thought we would be able to since newer gfx chipsets come in those mini-pci-e cards...or something like dat. sweat.gif

but HL2 and Quake 4 are running very smoothly on my SZ48. good for a few rounds during meeting breaks. smile.gif

Good to hear that dude...I like gaming too...that's why my target is SZ48 too... But 1 thing I doubted with, is it worth to pay extra RM1000 to get SZ48 instead of SZ44?
*
well...if ur main usage for ur laptop is mainly word processing, checking emails and surfing the net, then the SZ44 or even the SZ43 will do.

but if u like to do a little gaming, then go for the SZ48. the only difference between these SZ models is the processing speed and HDD space. The processing speed makes a big difference especially when gaming. of coz, dun expect it to be on par with desktop performance. i'm already very happy getting at least 60fps on my SZ48, even with HDR and 2x antialiasing turned on in HL2. Warcraft 3 is also very smooth. (good for networking sessions in the office). brows.gif if u want the best in gaming, u can opt for the nice but huge FE series or the ultra expensive AR model, both equiped with Nvidia 7600 chipset.

and remember to get an extra 1gb RAM when u purchase ur SZ. Windows Vista will thank you for it.

Not only those differences... The L2 cache speed for SZ48 is 4MB while the SZ44 or SZ43 is just 2MB only...  I been to Sony Style KLCC n try out among these 3 models... With 1G ram, SZ44 will a bit lag when i try to open programs while the SZ48 have no lag problem at all...smooth n fast... SZ48 provide bigger HDD space, which is 160GB.  When I check on the SZ48 at KLCC, it already use up bout 20GB already...HDD space left only around 135GB...
Furthermore, the SZ48 design is much nicer compare to other 2 SZ series, no matter in terms of LCD or the physical outlook...  That's the main thing that attract me about SZ48...but have to pay extra 1k pula... sweat.gif  sweat.gif

P/S - Add extra 1G of RAM will cost another few hundreds pula...
*
Sony laptops will take up 6-7gb of HDD space for recovery. (it's in a hidden partition). that's why u think that Windows is taking up loads of space. (well...it does...but only 2-3gb). i didn't know about the L2 Cache difference until now. sweat.gif

RAM is not that expensive. do not buy from Sony...they just stick in normal Kingston DDR-2 667mhz SODIMM RAM for u and u get get that at LYP for RM180 i think. Sony sells them for RM250. but it is highly recommended that u have at least 2gb RAM for Vista to run smoothly.

i bought s.t.a.l.k.e.r  collectors edition a few weeks ago and havent installed it lol =P

lol...u sure s.t.a.l.k.e.r. can run on a SZ48? even my desktop is struggling with the framerates. sweat.gif

I was surprised when I saw the percentage of HDD space used on the new SZ48...I wonder why it took up so many spaces de...After read this reply, now I know why dy... Dude, L2 speed really make lot of different la... As I replied b4, 2MB L2 cache on SZ44 n 4MB L2 cache on SZ48 really make diff alot man... The Sony Style promoter told me if I wanna add a 1G ram, he said need around 300++... I was  shocking.gif  shocking.gif
*
i thought all C2D processors have 4MB L2 cache? or maybe that's just for desktops?

RM300+ is crazy money for 1GB DDR-2 SODIMM RAM. i bought mine during PC Fair and enquired about the 1GB stick. the sales dude offered Kingston @ RM210. but i still went and bought it at LYP. only cost RM180.

a new Vaio needs to go through a setup phase b4 u can use it. if u load into Windows immediately after u turn it on the first time, then it's not factory sealed.

deed, why bother with vista upgrade biggrin.gif ... I havent done mine and wouldnt bother lah.

Question for SZ owners, do you set the fan speed to Adaptive? I've been running some heavy number crunching software and found that the adaptive fan is pretty cool in that it adjusts the speed when heavy CPU loading occurs (can see from Task Man)... but I found that after running for 3-4 hours, the bottom left hand corner of the laptop gets pretty warm.... any reason for concern. Should I leave the fan setting at Level 4-5?
*
i set mine to Lvl 5 and it's still quiet...though i'm not sure how it'll affect batt performance.

i think the bottom left houses the HDD...that's why it's hot.

hmm...weird thing happening to my Vaio.

i can't detect any new wifi connections, even though the network icon on my taskbar says that "wireless networks are available". when i click that, the "connect to a network" window appears, but it says "Windows cannot find any network". I can still manage to connect to my previous wifi connections that i have saved up and set to automatcially connect when they r available...but i can't detect/add new ones.

i'm afraid some of the Vista updates from Microsoft have screwed up my wireless. sweat.gif

try reboot again your lappy.
i have this problem before in Vista, but manage to solve it by rebooting and edit the wireless entry.

another way to solve this is, setting up first the wifi connection first by:

Network -> Network and Sharing Centre -> Manage Wireless Network -> Click "Add" , the rest edit yourself.
*
i've restarted it many many times...but it's still the same.

it's really very troublesome, especially when i'm in a hotspot and i can't even detect it.

funny thing is my lappy can still detect the hotspots. it'll display on the taskbar bubble that "wireless networks are available". but when i click the bubble, the "connect to a network" window pops up and it says "windows cannot find any additional networks...and my wireless connection list is empty. unsure.gif

i'm not sure what else to do, but thanks for the help anyway. notworthy.gif
