Sup guise! Coming to the USA turned me into a roadie. Just got a new bike: 2011 Cannondale CAAD10-5, imho the best aluminum frame one can buy. Total weight: 8.39kg.

But I still have my old 2006 Giant OCR 3

Do u have any tips on choosing a road bike?

http://bicycling.about.com/od/howtoride/a/bike_sizing.htm

I'm 178CM, around 5'11
means I need to choose a frame size 58~60? and inseam length means what?
*
You're probably best on a 56cm. I'm 5'7 and I ride 52cm.

Din saw it, it's a specialised shop in The Gardens Mall, cannot be cheap I guess

I got it used from craigslist for US$950 thumbup.gif Also the seller is a bike shop mechanic lady, so its in very good condition. If I were to buy a new one I'd have to get the 2012 model for $1600 + tax summore. Also Cannondale raised the MSRP by $100 but spec is still pretty much the same.

Can use the money saved to buy aero wheelset icon_idea.gif

I can get special price for this wheelset because they are one of the sponsors for my university team.

Hi there, thanks for replying. So minimum to spend on this sport to start is rm 4k? rclxub.gif  Ya i don't think i be upgrading the bike bcs of budget.. No most of the ppl we know don't believe in outdoor activities. The rather spend the money on those fancy gyms... Would like to know can join cycling group? Bcs i sometimes see group of boys & girls cycling around with their own uniforms are these groups of are they just friends??? Any bro or sis here part of any cycling group???

My Giant OCR3 was RM1800 and it is a thoroughly enjoyable bike. I rode 5000km on it last year and raced it too against people with RM10000+ bikes. I think there is nothing wrong with most entry-level Shimano Sora equipped bikes.

Also don't forget helmet, bib/jersey, shoes, clipless pedal etc...

If you know any clubs nearby, you MUST join one. Group rides are much more fun than riding alone.

Well being honest. To enjoy biking is not to have the most expensive bike or the fastest bike. Its about enjoying the most efficient machine in the world. I only ride a sub500 GTA mountain bike that is swapped with road tires. I ride it to work everyday. Its not a long commute, about 10km perday but i also ride in the rain. And i enjoy it everyday. My schedule hasnt allowed me to participate in any races or jamborees. my bike isnt fast. its not light. but i enjoy every moment when i am on it. and in Shah Alam, i think im the only commuter. And i am sure im having fun for every turn of the peddle.  just my two cents.

Just ride with what we have, you'll get stronger. And once u saved up for that bike you dream for, u'll be super fast!!!
*
Have you tried a road bike though? In the narrowed sense of riding on the road, there is a big difference between an MTB and a road bike, but not as much difference between a RM2000 road bike and a RM4000 road bike. I was talking about the law of diminishing returns you usually see when buying expensive high end stuff.

yup, I even started by buying cheap bikes. But since he's not looking for upgrading, it is suggested to get a 4k start. At least he has the motivation to cycle. And cycling in groups is the best way to compete healthy and compare performance amongst others.
*
It's just that when I was a beginner, it was difficult for me to justify spending RM1500+ on a bicycle. One year and a couple thousand km later, I was thinking of getting RM6000 bikes. I think starting with a cheap bike can give you a better idea of what to look for in a higher end bike when it's time to upgrade. This is however my experience as a poor student though. Can't say I wouldn't buy a RM4000 bike as a beginner if I had the money.

LTDL? wat other races are there?

I'm sure got a few amateur races in Malaysia? I went through Malaysia cycling federation website and they have a calendar with all these National Gran Prix omnium races but I'm not sure what level it's at.

Isn't there some sort of a league in Malaysia where you collect points in weekend races and total them up at the end of season (except the National GP I mentioned)?

Here's what my season looks like:
QUOTE
2012 NCCCC Road Season (as of Jan. 10th)

March 17-18 – Lindenwood University, St. Charles, MO (Joint conference event)
March 24-25 – Tour de Husker, Lincoln, NE (UNL)
March 31-April 1 – Jayhawk Classic, Lawrence, KS (KU)
    April 7-8 – Open (Easter)
April 14-15 – Wildcat Weekend, Manhattan, KS (KSU)
April 21-22 – Hawkeye Weekend, Iowa City, IA (UI)
April 28-29 – Gopher Weekend, Minneapolis, MN (UMTC)
May 4-6 – Collegiate Road Nationals, Ogden, UT

QUOTE(butthead @ Jan 15 2012, 10:39 PM)
aero wheels can be a big set back... are you talking about carbon deep dish aero wheels (40mm and above) or just normal aluminum clincher?

those carbon ones tubular or clincher sets you back 4k - 6k already... there are some reynolds for under RM2k i heard... aluminum clincher will slightly be easier.. mavic cosmics or SRAM S30 series should be under 3k..

entry carbon with full 105 or ultegra / 105 mix should come in from RM7k to 10k... seen Fuji (GH), Colnago (rodalink) in the upper 7k range and BMC and ridley or Blue (KSH) for about RM10k...

as i said.. depends on what wheels you want... full aero carbon sets with high profile in excess of 40mm can be quite expensive...
*
Better get a decent frame with ultegra and roll on stock wheels for a while, then spend good money on >50mm, <1.5kg carbon aero wheelset IMHO. Like for me, I wanted to get an aero wheelset but I'm not sure I can realize its full potential, as aero wheels work best the faster you go. Otherwise its only function is make your bike look pro.

RM4300 negotiable? It says "Front Mech - Microshift", any sifu can share how Microshift works compare to the usual SRAM and Shimano?
*
Same as any other front derailer. The shifters are still SRAM.

This is a Microshift shifter:

haha... those races will already have national and state riders competing.. no chance for people like us la... can't even see their dust after 5KM from start line...

our only events are organized ones for the general public like the OCBC and club organized century, interstate rides...  not really that competitive but more of fun rides...
*
Every year I pay RM180 to USA Cycling for a race license that sorts cyclists according to 5 ability levels, because I'm not going to race if I know I cannot ever get a podium finish.

After a 60km race, would you rather sprint to the finish line for 50th place, or 1st place in Category 5?

i think over here you either train for states or there is no other classifications...at the end of the day... we are in for the fun and not to be competitive...

Thank you for the local's perspective. I don't know anything about road biking in Malaysia before I left, because no bicycle...

anyone can recommend a good Cervelo bike? im looking at S3 coz the aerodynamic design then i saw Boardman also got with their Air model. Which one is more race proven?
*
I personally prefer the R stuff. My friend has an R3. Overall a Cervelo is one I can only wish to own, but they were recently bought over by PON so future quality may be worrisome.
