Should i get SV35 or Skyhawk ?
I'm currently using it as a secondary partition to store my video files(mostly HD).
I'll use my main system hdd to access this secondary partition to watch video as well.
This is not a NAS and it's my personal desktop pc.

=.= this thread seems rather dead... Just ask a suggestion for Seagate Skyhawk vs sv35 seems like no replies. Not requiring a 24/7 support or instant one since it's a free joint community advice only. But at least an advise at least?

If dead like vhs, then still many people use vhs to store porn because of cheap and big storage unlike ssd. At least you can store many episodes and 1080p somemore. Enough to store 4k ones too. Ssd store a few, low disk space.

It wasn't just seagate. Seems to me western digital was screwing up as well. Their blue and green series seems to be a junk series that have been rma very frequently. After 1 years sharp, it'll die. Some last till 2 years mark and fail very punctually. Nice strategy of western digital to be calculative to make you dump your hdd after 2years.
This seems to be a joint collaboration strategy made by western digital and seagate because Harddisk price fell like dirt cheap. In order to secure their revenue, they made rainbow color and gothic names model with different price range. But nicely, none of the harddisk will ever survive past a legendary 10 years mark. You pay RM100-200 with a bigger space gb, it'll bound to fail after 1-2 years. You pay 200-300 ,it'll fail after 3-4 years. You pay 300-500 , it'll fail after 7 years. The manufacturers such as seagate and western digital knows that nowadays, it's hard for everyone to live without 1 tb. It's a common storage numbers. So in order have free flow of money coming into their company, they design their hdd to die after certain cycle of useage.

You assuming Google uses the same Sata hdd as you do? I believe they uses top notch server built storage that last very long and have very low failure rate. It's business and those storage runs 24/7 around the clock. Normal hdd like ours if used in their server will die in a week or perhaps could not last through 3 days. Yeap it's raid which means wearing up the spin cycle even further more. Besides, I'm unsure if our normal hdd could even fit into Google servers.. It needs to be hot swappable without the need to down the servers. I believe neither ahci nor ide provide such convenience to be hot swappable without booting off windows. Maybe USB but I don't think Google is dumb enough to have USB all over the servers to contain the huge amount of storage space just for the convenience of hot swappable.

I assume that from what you ask, you might have already Google up the answers yourself. But you would like further citations from someone else. I've to say this is close business strategy. If someone is able to lay it out on spreadsheet on your questions, he can be either the new ceo of Google or Google will have to worry about a new competitor. Electric cost I assume you saw the word green and economy energy Google data center. Disk failure rate I believe would be something they won't reveal. If you look closely the hdd, they are not showing what kind of hdd they using. But do you want your business to be full of failing hdd if you operate a Datacenter? Yes we talk about raids that has mirroring and failing one has multiple ones to replace. But I can assure you, the hdd you have on hand is quite different from the one that's provided to Google data centers. They have contracts straight from the manufacturer itself or perhaps indirectly with a distributor. Which has some form of warranty on those hdd. Like dell's hdd warranty for enterprise. I remember is around rm500 annually. The hdd if spoil, Dell will send you a new one directly without rma your current faulty one. I believe is same as what Google operates on. Or something closer. But take note, like what I said, as a manufacturer yourself, do you want to keep warranty those failing hdd? Your company will immediately bankrupt to cover those losses. I might have overlooked the Sata hdd part because I used to seen scsi hdd that looks the same size as Sata. The only difference is the connector. There are other type SAS. I believe most data centers operates on that one.
