Also keep in mind serverpartdeals rep is good for this, and they even have 2 year warranty whereas other places might not for these kinds of drives or even shorter warranties which is not very reassuring.

If anyone else bought any drives and did the smart test i recommended for seagate for the farm data and u detected its not brand new. i suggest u immediately contact shopee and ask for a refund. Point them to this article as ur reason. If u wait too long, may be harder to get a refund.

Make sure u backup first though

this is what i used

how i install, i used truenas, then pop in the hard drive. then in docker (i use dockge UI to install new docker containers), i then deploy the docker compose for this farm-check docker container app (lots of malware in fake docker pages, so confirm if the one you are using is legit or a fake loaded with malware. do ur own diligence)

then u can go to the shell for that container and run the checks. It was easy and quick.

For myself, i spotted a 4 year already used drive whos farm power on hours did not match despite the seller claiming is brand new (when clearly its not). What i did was, contact shopee and ask for refund with all the proof. And i got my refund.

In a future purchase, i bought a X18 Exos 12tb from a different seller. Price was the same as a seagate 12tb non pro. Difference is, the non pro from amazon is 3 year warranty, whereas the one i bought had 4 year warranty (STORE warranty, NOT seagate. This was CLEARLY stated in the seller page when i bought. so its not like he cheated, everything was upfront). That said i DO NOT know if this new seller will honor a warranty or not.

The PREVIOUS seller, when i ask for warranty because i found out from seagate that the drive did not qualify, so they ask me to ask from the seller. Seller claimed they were doing refund on my behalf. Wait 2 months, nothing. Basically in this case, the scammer was never going to replace drive under warranty, they just waste ur time and pretend as if they r doing something. But they did not expect me to hound them through shopee to finally get my refund.

Thats my experience, so dont fall into the same trap i did sweat.gif


The NEW seller is totally legit because i ran the farm check, it checked out. Power on hours tallied as 0. Meaning brand new. X18 is hardly the newest in the exos line, but for me the important part is its 12tb and is NAS certified for 24/7 and it's power on hours 0 (basically brand new condition unused). The specs also decent despite not being the latest exos. So this was a good buy for me. 4 year warranty even (the normal warranty from seagate is 5 year)


if u dont have a truenas, i suspect u can use some sort of virtual emulation to install truenas and do it from your desktop. Hook up the hard drive to your desktop pc and add it to the VM. There should be guides on youtube how to do this. It's easy as long as you follow the youtube guides. In your bios you need to enable the VM stuff.

is OEM, so warranty is STORE warranty. NOT SEAGATE. Everything seems upfront, its all mentioned in the store.

only thing i am unsure of is whether the store will honor warranty or not. thats the only thing i never tested.

But i can tell u my experience for warranty from a different seller which was a scammer. zero possibility of warranty. When try, they bluff, ended up wasting 1-2 months waiting for nothing.

That said so far curated pc shop seems legit. But i donno where they source their hard drives from. he says pre-order, so i am guessing drop ship?

regardless how he got them, it seems authentic and is brand new power on hours 0 (even after checking farm).

i did a FULL check. Took many days to check the whole drive. It's legit. The test fills the whole hard drive to test it thoroughly to see any issues or not. There were none.

I would rather wager my money on getting used drives on taobao rather than paying a markup to get one from a local seller, who essentially does the same thing.
Edit: For FARM check on Windows PC, do the following:
1. Get Smartmontools and install https://sourceforge.net/projects/smartmonto...rtmontools/7.4/
2. Once installed, you will need to run CMD with admin privileges, with the following command lines smartctl -a /dev/sdX and smartctl -l farm /dev/sdX; X indicates the logical drive alphabet in which you will need to do a smartctl --scan
3. Compare the SMART power on value and the FARM power on value of your drive. If they are not similar, you have a dud.

this part made no sense. Supplier change so what does that have to do with you? if it's store warranty, he should still honor warranty if the drive gone bad. There is a small claims tribunal u can lodge a report, but i honestly would just skip that and just go straight to shopee to get your refund. It's faster and less inconvenience for you.

How long did u have the drive for? mine i had it for like 3-4 (not counting the 2-3 additional months waiting for a rma that never happened) months i got a FULL refund. not partial. i got from shopee, did not bother negotiating with the seller which already was untrustworthy.

best offer? for a warranty u should have gotten to begin with? thats not right sad.gif

i dont know about amazon.com US

but for ebay, i bought a couple HGST ultrastars many years ago. When 1 of the drives went bad, i tried to get warranty but couldn't. reason? warranty covered under different region rolleyes.gif

So before you buy, make sure you can claim warranty malaysia. That is the first thing you need to ask the seller. Let us know cause i also interested hmm.gif

Another thing to be careful especially when buying from western digital, make sure the HDD is a CMR (NOT SMR).

wd red PLUS or Pro is the CMR, not the plain wd red afaik. so be careful and make sure u carefully check



In malaysia i tested seagate purchased from local shopee for original. 2 methods i tested. Either they come and collect from you (they send a huge truck). OR, you drive to their drop off depot to drop it off there yourself. Got a replacement both times doing that. Last time could call support center, now cannot, instead have to use live chat if you got to ask something about your warranty claim case.

So i would say seagate warranty (for official hdds) are easy and reliable. But if you buy seagate hdd through unofficial channels, seagate will be very dodgy for not wanting to let you claim warranty. e.g. if u buy seagate hdd of shopee, the HDD MAY or MAY not have proper warranty by seagate. So be very very careful who buy from sweat.gif

for western digital warranty not sure i haven't tried. but for seagate it didn't cost me anything to get the replacement when i requested rma. unless u did the drop off yourself then you have to pay the fuel to drive there to do that biggrin.gif

but your issue is whether if buy from amazon us if can claim warranty malaysia. that i dont know since i never tested that before sweat.gif

This is a NON pro seagate ironwolf 12tb. But for home NAS it's good enough. And for the price it's fine. If you try buy something like this on shopee, they go for rm 1.8k or roughly.

Alternative to that i saw a "TOSHIBA
N300 12TB NAS 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive - CMR SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 512 MB Cache - HDWG51CXZSTA" slightly cheaper and has a 512 MB cache. But i dont know how reliable toshiba nas drives are or how well their warranty claim works. Anyone know?

Anyway the seagate amazon seller amazon/seagate is safe for warranty if you believe the comment that confirmed it. Not sure about toshiba and western digital, you have to do your own research.

Having tried seagate exos, i will stick to the seagate ironwolf non pro since it's cheaper than the exos (through legit seller channels. Sure you can get it for same price from sketchy sellers but way too risky when it comes to the condition and warranty so totally not worth it).


hopefully that helped someone. i'm also planning to order more hard drives for myself, so had to do research where to get from for cheapest.

what it boils down to

- sure u get more cache than the seagate for a cheaper price
- but their warranty sux in comparison. i've used seagate, they charge me anything. unless u want to drop off point then u got to pay the fuel to drive there yourself. but their free collection is totally free.
- bad power efficiency
- not mentioned in the review but people mentioned it's louder than seagate.

From experience, certain products do have international warranty coverage on regional areas (ie ASEAN) but having a central location for collection (ie SG or Thai) and you have to pay for shipment to these collection points which can be a bit expensive negating any savings buying from 3rd parties. having used seagate exos before, i'm familiar now with it. Though they say may be cheaper and have a longer 5 year warranty, you have to be very mindful which exos you are getting. The X12 for EXOs is notorious for having high failure rates. I think the X18 is ok since i have that and didn't experience issues or notice any major problems for them on social. But just because they say it's cheap, doesn't mean you will be getting the X18 or newer. For all you know, you'd most likely be getting that X12 (which is bad). so this is the drive i am looking at to purchase ST12000NT001. Because it's cheaper than the 008 non pro ironwolf listed on shopee. And is 5 year vs 3 year warranty. And doesn't seem to have any particular news headline for failure rates mentioned. I guess the one downside is it has a 256MB cache, whereas the WD plus 12tb has the newer 500 MB cache. But i'm mostly interested in capacity size 12tb. As it's a NAS drive for 24/7 operation and it's within my budget. The wd red plus 12tb cost Rm2.2k which is way more than ST12000NT001 sweat.gif

I've owned a couple of seagates before (including those that qualify for local warranty bought from local sources) and they do die within 1-3 years. for rm1.6k in malaysia you can only expect to get a 12tb ironwolf non pro or a wd red plus 12tb.

we probably have to give up buying from amazon since warranty not covered. unless you want to risk your hard drive remains fine while under the warranty duration. i can't take that chance, enough hard drives died in that warranty period sweat.gif

so seems no drop off point for WD in malaysia. Seagate they do (ive been there before myself to confirm).

Shipping for the seagate is local, and they give u the label so cost u nothing for that. put the hard drive in the box u got it from, slap on the printed label, drop off at the nearest post laju office.

for WD seems u have to ship it to vietnam rolleyes.gif and u have to pay for that. How much? i dont know.


the silver lining people claim wd hard drives less chance they go bad/failure rate compared to seagate. dont know if that is true now in 2025 or not.




As for seagate they use to have a call center in india i sus, but that got shut down. It was totally useless to begin with. Now you only can contact them via live chat for rma enquiries. Seagate just fill in the rma form, submit. It shows your rma status there, and you can then also ask live chat for a status update on your rma, and get further clarification whether they come collect or you drop off yourself.
