So, I currently have a Toshiba N300 4TB 7200rpm 3.5" internal HDD to store all my media and I'm looking to purchase another 2TB or 3TB drive just to do a backup for all my camera pictures from my travels, etc.

The 2TB or 3TBH HDD is purely for storage purposes and I hope it would be really quiet, perhaps 5400rpm instead of 720rpm? I'm looking at all sorts, WD Blue/Red, Toshiba P300 or something from Seagate?

no reliable HDD brand as far as i know, you wanna see the pile of my dead WD and Tosbiba hdd?
My friends has pile of dead Seagate hdd too. lol

External or internal depends on your preference, external are portable and only support USB 3, internal HDD are faster and can setup as RAID 1 for redundancy.

Setup RAID 1 with 2 identical HDD, your file copied to the RAID hdd will be mirrored to second hdd, automatically.
always make more than 1 copy of your important files.

Based on your comment on RAID 1, should I be using RAID 1 for my setup?

I have a 4TB HDD containing various files (1.1TB) but the the folder containing all the pictures of family/friends/travels (around 0.7TB) is the one I would like to have a "mirror copy" in another HDD just in case that 4TB HDD dies.

Maybe I should just manually copy paste the files
