Hey guys,

I am currently doing research about our neighbouring country UAV procurement and development, have been googling for about 3 days now.

Maybe if you guys can post some related articles here it would be much help for me. Afraid that I might be missing some interesting article.

Also it is quite hard to look for reliable articles eh? Many links that i found are quite biased and unprofessionally written. Quite scare also to quote and put into my project.

The Republic of Singapore Navy's Fearless-class patrol vessel, RSS Independence, while on duty in the South China Sea. The ship was decommissioned on 8 March 2017. (Ministry of Defence, Singapore)

The boat was formally retired on 8 March at Tuas Naval Base in a decommissioning ceremony presided over by RSN chief Rear Admiral Lai Chung Han.

The Fearless class, which has been referred to by the country's ministry of defence as the first warships wholly designed and built in Singapore, has been operational since 1996, and is being progressively retired to make way for the RSN's new Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs).

Independence was launched by then Singapore Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited (currently known as ST Marine) in April 1998. The vessel was mostly deployed for maritime surveillance, patrol, and escort operations while in service with the RSN's 182 Squadron, as part of the Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF).

The 508-tonne, water-jet-propelled platform is powered by two MTU 12V 595 TE90 diesel engines, giving it a top speed on 20 kt and a standard range of 1,800 n miles at 15 kt. Defensive capabilities are provided for by an Oto Melara 76 mm naval gun and 12.7 mm machine guns. A number of vessels in the Fearless class are also armed with a 25 mm gun system.

The name 'RSS Independence' will be handed over to Singapore's first LMV, which is due to be commissioned in mid-2017, along with its operational duties in 182 Squadron.

Light in logistics terms, and actually yes in firepower terms too

Actually that is because US Marines are used as their quick reaction forces, in addition to the 2 airborne divisions. Thats why they also take over armed rescue roles too. They are based on island bases and at sea on board their amphib transports and they train to respond within a matter of days - which the US Army doesn't.

But they are relatively lightly equipped - thats 1 of the reason they can move fast. So they will need to be reinforced by the US Army.

With M1A1 Abrams, new AAV SV and the upcoming USMC ACV Programme (two competitors between the Terrex 2 or BAE ACV) i don't think the USMC is lightly equipped.

Don't forget their air aviation F-35, F-18, Harriers, AH-1Z Vipers & Ospreys etc.

But they have very short logistics tail
Typically rely on Navy, Army and Airforce support
A USMC battalion task force is lighter than, say, a Russian battalion battle group

And compared with US Army divisions, yes its "light"
F-35 will replace Harrier
Compare Viper (USMC) vs Apache (Army)

CMIIW unlike the USMC the US Army doesn't have any fixed wing combat aircraft.

India Unlikely To Buy Additional Rafale Fighter Jets

Our Bureau

Rafale Fighter Jet

India is unlikely to place a follow-on order to purchase twin engine Rafale fighter planes manufactured by French Aerospace Dassault Aviation in spite of the country’s airforce fleet being depleted.

The Indian government signed a contract to purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets in fly-away condition on September 23 for $8.8 billion.

Even though the actual plan was to purchase 126 Rafale jets, it was trimmed because of the high cost of each aircraft and only 36 were bought after negotiations with France, The Hindu Business Line reported Sunday.

As a result, there are hardly any possibilities that the government will place any further orders to buy these expensive planes, officials in the Defence Ministry said.

“Follow on orders for the Rafale are a big question mark. Where is the money going to come from? There are much cheaper options available,” said a senior official.

Currently, IAF has 34 squadrons out of the 42 required to guard the skies. This is the lowest count for the IAF in the last decade. Each squadron consists of 18 aircraft. Apart from this, 11 squadrons consisting of MiG-21s, are looking at retirement, which will pose an additional challenge.

However, sources said the government was now focused on acquiring single-engine fighter jets, the deal size of which is around $12 billion. The frontrunners in this are Saab’s Gripen and Lockheed Martin’s F-16.

Dassault Aviation has already clarified the government that it will not be able to go for full transfer of technology and create an industrial ecosystem by manufacturing the planes here under the ‘Make in India’ programme unless it is given additional orders.
