Hey Guys , I'm from Cheras ...
I have a severe underbite, Since I don't know anything about jaw surgery, I went to an orthodontist for consultation (imperial Dentist In Bangsar) fee for consultation damn mahal.Jilake
The Doctor told me the procedure to undergo a surgery, the estimation price , the only thing that makes me pening is that they need to cooperate with another hospital that can perform the surgery ,because they only can do the pre-surgical Braces (compulsory according to the dentist)

So The Question I wanted to ask:

A) How Much Is the Cost
B) Is It Claimable from Insurance
C) Do I Need To Put On Pre-Surgical Braces (if do, pls Recommend Any Hospital That Can Do Both Surgery And Braces)
D) Which is the best hospital for maxillofacial surgery

Hope Any Experts Or Experienced Patient can help me out

I've known a few who underwent mandibular set back (bilateral saggital split ostetomy), ended up with bigger problems like asymetry etc etc.

Your money would be best spent in Singapore. Dr Winston Tan is the man to go for. I can vouch for him as I've seen him do magic.

I haven't come across anyone like you tho. Do update here.

There's one oral surgeon here where you can see from the
LDP, near Groway, everytime you drive past.

Seems to have a good review.

Actually, Maxillofacial surgery is quite common in Malaysia , It just that the patients are too embarrassed to share their situations and experience due to our society mindset still thinks altering our physical appearances are unacceptable even if we have complication in functioning it. They will still think it's solely for the sake of cosmetic even after explaining it (I know I've been through it all)

25th October 2016-Took a consultation from an expert(Prof Nazimi From HUKM Private Sector) in

30th October 2016 -Prof Nazimi Decided to have a join clinic with Klinik Pakar Orthodontics In KL since i need Pre-Braces to align my teeth to avoid complication during surgery & Post-Braces

15th November 2016 - Removed My left wisdom tooth for braces (SAKIT WOI)

18th December 2016 - Removed My right wisdom tooth for braces.(Removed In HUKM Bandar Tun Razak) murah je RM 25 for each teeth, sebab tak ambik medication.

3rd January 2017 - Consultation by the orthodontics, they took my facial X-ray and my teeth impression( the worst 6 minutes of my life) The total cost for the braces is 3k, I deposit 2k first and pay monthly 100 during appointment for tightening it

How serious is your under bite? i had underbite issue, i was told the same as your orthodontist told you. Braces > Surgery > Braces (3 process) was quote around 60k+- all in.
But i did not go for the surgery, only braces but they did remove 2 of my teeth and my wisdom tooth and slowly adjusted (take 5 years to complete my braces) no more underbites issue after my braces..

I just had an orthognathic(double jaw) surgery on the 24th fo sept.

I'm not sure if he's the best or what so, but I highly recommend Prof. Zainal Ariff at UMSC. My recovery went almost as twice as fast as a normal rate. I've already started chewing on my 7th day when it typically takes 2-3 weeks.

Hi may i know if mild underbite can go for surgery? and current im wearing braces right now (but not for surgery purpose) only for teeth alignment as i was told that my jaw could be aligned only with braces and i thought wrong. And im so frustrated about that i wanna go for surgery (eventhough i had spent many on braces)

Since mine is in a private hospital, it cost way more then HUKM, the total cost for my surgery is RM52k, Thankfully, my insurance covers the cost.

The consultation are a bit long since the orthodontist needs to prepare your teeth to get as accurate as possible on the surgery. I wore braces for 15months before my surgery date.

Though, a piece of advice from me. For the surgery, ask your dr, don't rely on blog post or someone on the internet. Cause every surgeon has their own way. Pretty much every post about recovery I've read is very untrue.

1. From what I knew, pain after anesthesia are vary form person to person. But in my personal experience, it is a bit painful right after I woke up. The pain quickly goes away when the nurse gave you pain killer injection.

2. I'm no sure about pricing in general since I wasn't concern about it much. But my total quoted cost is RM52k, for double jaw orthognathic surgery and chin implant surgery.

3. Sometimes, overbite/underbite can be fixed by just braces. In general, I have an overbite and misaligned jaw. of course with misaligned jaw my face is no symmetrical. clicking jaw aren't a 100% sure will go away with orthognathic surgery since that's more of a TMJ problem. In my case, my TMJ problem does get better after surgery but it's still there.

4. I did my surgery on UMSC, like I said on previous comment, If price isn't a problem for you I really recommend Prof. Zainal Ariff. Idk about other doctors.

I'm not really sure about this since my mom handles it. For my surgery, RM40k is covered by a guarantee letter from my mom's workplace. The remaining 12k is covered by prudential insurance.

I did my surgery in May 2019 @ HKL (Dr. Lee)
- Surgery was alright
- but the result wasn't satisfying as the surgeon decided to upper jaw alone when it was supposed to be both upper and lower (initial place with surgeon and orthodontist)
- recovery wasn't bad, smooth
- the whole process took me 2 years (including braces and surgery) - since both under Gov.

Post Surgery:
- now im getting breathing difficulties.
- getting nose blocked on side. used to be at night only but lately its getting bad to worse.
- orthodontist suggesting to go for another surgery with diff surgeon (to correct both upper and lower and to fix breathing problem)

Confused:
- if i should go to GH or Private. i
- dont mind private IF it covers everything under medical card and if they can do a proper job

>> Can anyone advice me on this.

Hi mubin,

Seriosuly prudential insurance covered your surgery?,I did ask my insurance agent but why they said prudential can't cover for my surgery.. So sad. I've spent almost RM11k for plate, screw and hospitality. Thats weird..

Today is my 3rd week of post ops, underbite correction. I realise my bracket is falling off and the braces is shaking. However, I can’t open my mouth widely as per normal, Max capacity: 1 finger. Is it advisable to see orthodontist now?

I guess, thats normal. Even when i having my wisdom teeth removal, i can't open my mouth widely. It takes time. You can do jaw exercise.

If you feel insecure about your bracket then shouldn't be a problem see your ortho.

Hi Wawawi,

Your RM11k included pre-surgical preparations like braces/implant? May i know who is your doctor for your surgery?

Thanks.

Depends on your reason. For appearance, I'm not so sure. but for jaw pain or difficulty of eating, then a big YES.

In general, the major difference to me after the surgery is mainly my eating habits. It's much easier to eat nowadays. I can freaking bite a burger now and it actually cuts.

In term of my appearance, yes I do see quite a lot of difference. Since I used to have an overbite and an uneven jaw, my face looks long and I tend to subconsciously smirk a lot(in a bad way). But now I would say my face looks even and normal. My smile looks normal now and I can smile without being paranoid about how I look. Since my surgery, people I'm close with tend to not recognise me at first, but people that I'm not that close with does recognise me.

Recovery can be very diff from person to person, Like 70% of things I found on the internet doesn't occur to me which is why your Dr will always advise you to not read about the surgery on the internet.

Hi,

The Total cost of my surgery is RM 9000 (not inlcuded braces)

I took the first consultation when i first post about this topic and i just had my surgery on 9th October 2019.

I really recommend HUKM though. you can always just book an appointment for the consultation.

Does the price vary from case to case? I'm an expat, it seems to me getting it here in Malaysia is cheaper if not done in private institutions, but im not sure if Malaysian Government have extra charges for foreigners, or if foreigners can actually avail jaw surgery in government hospitals. Also it seems that the hospitals mentioned in this thread are all somewhere near if not on KL itself. Is there any government hospital that does jaw surgery near Penang?

For a foreigner?
You're gonna be placed dead last on the list if you're not an "emergency" case for government institutions even if you get one. Why bother?
Considering with the current pandemic going on, elective treatments are not prioritized.

The term "cheaper" only applies if you're a citizen that is in dire need of surgery to correct the impairment with no or meager means to pay for it. So definitely expect a far different pricing compared to the locals.

-There’s no setbacks at all for me. But keep in mind the results may vary for every patient.

-It took me 8 months to fully recover, total fees including braces is exactly 16k.

- I had the longest numbness on my upper lips but nothing permanent.

-A little Asymmetrical face is quite normal for a human being.

- The screws on your jaw has a high chance of infection if you eat solid foods before fully recover.

Sorry for digging out old thread but currently i'm facing kinda same situation as yours where i have cyst underneath my molars (big tooth) behind which pressure down my wisdom tooth.

Not sure how long it developed d but i first noticed my jaw has this minor bony protrusion (and did not seek for dentist check) and seek for general doc roughly 3 years ago.
The general doc done me X-ray and CT scanning but did not notice any abnormal.

Between these 3 years i also done some oral and tooth checking with x-ray but non of the doc realised sweat.gif

Time forward to last month when i went for dentist to fix my upper molar, the doc (differ with previous) done another round of x-ray & saw there is this big black zone above my left wisdom tooth which now she refer me to gov hospital.

Whole the while i don't really feel anything actually.
But this week starting to like feel minor pain or some weird feeling - not sure is it due to stress
Next week will back to GH and consult again for surgeric appointment.

May i know that how you find out yours and was it big?
My case seems to be big and GH doc says my jaw has weakened and might facing fracture during operation. i might also need to remove two of my molars in order to access the cyst as well as wisdom tooth below it.
