Hey all, I just did a simple analysis on the day which Apple Pay was announced in the past (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pay#Availability) and listed below are the results:

Mon: 2.3% (1)
Tue: 61.4% (27)
Wed: 22.7% (10)
Thu: 13.6% (6)
Fri: 0.0% (0)

Total: 44 (some announcements covers >1 countries)

Inferring from the past data above and info from @nokia2003, announcement date for Apple Pay in Malaysia could be as follows:
2 Aug 2022
9 Aug 2022

For reference, Apple Pay in these countries/regions were launched in August:
Macau - 6 Aug 2019
Qatar - 17 Aug 2021

Hope these help. Looking forward to AP's launch in Malaysia!!

Did some further analysis on the Week Of The Month (first day of the month as Week 1) of the past release dates and the results are as follows:
Week 1: 6.8% (3)
Week 2: 22.7% (10)
Week 3: 18.2% (8)
Week 4: 34.1% (15)
Week 5: 18.2% (8)

So I guess past data is pointing towards 9 Aug 2022 more than 2 Aug 2022 (if any of these are correct). With that said, this is based on probability from past data.

AP not here yet so people dont know how it works. terminal dont need to have 'AP' category to accept AP. AP is the same as you tapping your CC just that your CC info is digitize into AP thats all there is no additional settings to add or change in existing terminals but people will argue about this anyway to stay relevant including the people saying its coming soon™ just waiting for this and that approval altho its been months already and yet no update.

gonna have to unsubscribe to this topic soon since its just clickbaits now haha

you can use AP on any terminal that accepts CC / DC just that the cards will be oversea cards and not malaysian cards. unless you wanna argue that msia terminal so geng they update the terminal to accept oversea AP before msia even have their own AP????

I know this was a pretty old reply at this point but thought of sharing some info that I have read.

1. "Terminal dont need to have 'AP' category to accept AP."
From what I understand, this is mostly true. Similar to many other countries, Malaysia has a threshold amount for Contactless payment (MYR250) which not require Cardholder Verification (PIN, Signature, etc.). As such, for payments below the threshold amount, physical Apple Pay (AP) transactions should be processed similar to the Contactless Payments we have had for may years now without issue. Based on my experience using AP with UK cards here in convenience stores, it has been the case.

2. "There is no additional settings to add or change in existing terminals"
Further to Point 1, in the case of purchases above the threshold amount, Apple and other wallets such as Google Pay do support a newer Cardholder Verification Method (CVM) called the Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM). From what I have found online, the Card Terminal Machine, Merchant's Acquirer, and Payment Networks (Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX) all have to enable CDCVM in order for the CDCVM flag passed out by AP (or other wallets) to be recognised as a valid CVM.

CDCVM is part of the latest Contactless Specifications published by the major Payment Networks (VCPS, PayPass, ExpressPay). As such, by the word "updating" mentioned by other forumers, I hope that it means the financial institutions in Malaysia is enabling CDCVM throughout the card payment network chain to prepare for a better AP experience.

While there is no explicit "AP" category, I reckon the said term may have been used to refer to CDCVM support.

3. "AP is the same as you tapping your CC just that your CC info is digitize into AP that's all"
Generally, for mobile wallets to "present" a card for payment, there are 2 main methods:
a. Pure Host Card Emulation (HCE); and
b. HCE with Tokenisation

The difference between the two methods would be the use of Tokenisation. Based on Apple's documents, AP do make use of tokenisation which is why the Device Account Number and the Actual Account Number is different. As such, AP from my understanding is more than just digitalising the card (which I interpret as pure HCE; where the device presents the physical card as is).

All in all, I hope that when AP do launch in Malaysia, CDCVM could be ready in places with high transaction value (electronic shops, certain restaurants, etc.) to maximise the use of AP.

Please note that the above are purely based on my understanding and please do perform your own due-diligences before relying on the above information. I am neither a payments expert nor do I work in the payments industry.
