if u are using JR, just go to JR counter, more easy for u to buy a reserve seat ticketi have experience buying from machine, missing a step end up getting an unreserved seat, then have to stand for 90 mins.

So serious meh? Not all trains right? Some trains like shinkansen or some other train you can pay on the spot. Cant remember the line, but I took express train from Hitachi to Tokyo. I was in a rush I just bought the train ticket. Then I pay for the reserve seat ticket to the conductor.
i dont think this is possible, unless is just only one station, ppl will up and down from different station, unless the conductor with a PDA to check the seat availability, else they wont know if the seat reserve by a customer at next station.
