Today I learned: The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter had razor-sharp wings

user posted image

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter's trapezoid wing was so thin and sharp, especially near the wingtip, that protective guards were put in place before ground maintenance operations to prevent ground crew from hitting it and injuring themselves.  laugh.gif

wow! never knew that. sure the wing loading would be tremendous

The USAF never had that much to begin with, according to wiki USAF started with 81 C-5 planes in 1968. All later variants of C-5s are descended from retrofitting these original 81 planes. No new C-5 airframes have been produced since.

After crashes and write-offs and general decommissioning of older planes over the years, they have as of 2015, 57 planes left in service and are planning to reduce this to 52 by 2017.

they're upgrading to C5M. i read in Combat Aircraft and Air Forces Monthly the everyone loves them much more than the original A or B series. A lot of grunts from those CF6 enginess. All in all, better performance while using less fuel.

More modern avionics and computers make it easier to fly. Also, 'less fuel' is a relative term. A fully fueled C-5 carries so much fuel that it can used by an average car to circumnavigate the earth 31 times.

hahahaha.. of course it's compared to older A and B series la. hahaha

I'd say M1 Abrams have not shown all of its weaknesses yet, as for the last 20-25 years the US military have only trashed 3rd world militaries instead of peer or near-peer adversaries with equal or better technology and equipment. All of their wars since have been a cakewalk (Panama, Iraq part 1 & 2, Afghanistan) and allowed less than gruelling tests for the Abrams short of full-scale warfare.

for a country with big budgets, they can afford to feed their abrams with avgas. the rest must make do with diesel only. deswai european tanks are drinking diesel + easy on maintenance. any guy who repairs truck engines can also repairs tank engines.

"Poland has considered to buy a $3.5 billion Polish-made Black Hawk helicopters after the country scrapped plans to buy 50 French-made military helicopters from Airbus Helicopters.
Polish Special Forces would be able to begin training with the Black Hawks later this year, Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz was quoted as saying various media Monday.
The modernization of Poland's army became paramount two years ago when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, making Central and Eastern Europe anxious, Macierewicz said.
Leaders with the nationalistic ruling Law and Justice party said, the deal with Airbus didn't serve the nation's best interests. A preliminary deal with Airbus had been sealed by the previous, pro-European ruling party, Civic Platform. Law and Justice, which won elections a year ago,
They had been skeptical of it, but carried out talks for many months before announcing that the two sides couldn't agree on an offset deal, which was a major condition for the purchase.
In an offset agreement, the seller of a product or service agrees to invest in sectors or goods on the buyer's side, as a way of compensating or enhancing the value of the deal. Offset deals usually accompany large deals in the military industry.
The offers made by Airbus Helicopters failed to properly secure Poland's economic and security interests. Earlier Polish officials had hinted the value of the offset should approximately suit the value of the purchase and should help develop the nation's defense industry."

I could smell that from far away when they said Airbus deal is off

oh. ASG = Abu Sayyaf Group sweat.gif We need those helis, LMS and MMEA's new OPVs to deal with these asshats.

But we shouldn't forget that ATM is an insurance policy against the most unlikely event, and a relatively modest investment in ATGMs is simply being prudent... kind of like SG style brows.gif brows.gif

1. RPG-7 has very low effective range.
2. RPG cages is standard issue now.
3. Challenger 2s in Iraq took 10, 20, even 40 RPG hits in one case without catastrophic damage. Our neighbours are equipped with Leopard 2s.

RPGs are brilliant to use as a squad weapon and will do well against thin-skinned APCs and infantry in urban/enclosed terrain, and yes even against tanks if fired from directly above. But the ATGM coverage for our infantry is lacking - IIRC all we have is a total of 24 to 36 Vamtacs/G-wagons for Metis ATGMs. Assuming standard 6 launchers each, that's only 4 to 6 infantry battalions equipped to fight tanks, along with Para's Eryx/Carl Gustav and Armour's 8 to 18 (not sure) Baktar Shikans. That is assuming the Metis are all still operational.

It may have been 'just enough' then. Its not 'just enough' now. Another 60 ATGMs and ~8 rounds each - how much is that? Usd 300k each? Usd 18 million? Compared to the rest of the budget its not that much for a little peace of mind...
*
i believe we're talking about those pilaks aka ASG... them got no armor, no APC, only on foot. even their small boats can be spammed with RPG, regardless of lack of range.
