Today I learned: Indonesians purchased 25 Tu-16 "Badger' bombers way back in the 1960s, in preparation for war with the Netherlands over West Irian

Ever since independence in 1949, Indonsia has always coveted the territory of West Irian. Under president Sukarno, Indonesian military forces continually raided the territory, which was then was still ruled under the Dutch colonial government. This culminated in the breaking off of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In 1961, the Indonesians launched 'Operasi Trikora' to capture West Irian from the dutch authorities. In 1962, Indonesian incursions into the territory in the form of paratroop drops and the naval landings of guerrillas were used to step up the Indonesian Foreign Minister Subandrio's diplomatic confrontation with the Dutch.

Operation Trikora was to unfold in three phases, infiltration, exploitation and consolidation, all under cover of the Indonesian Air Force. The plan called first for the insertion of small bands Indonesian troops by sea and by air drop who would then draw Dutch forces away from areas where the exploitation phase would stage full scale amphibious landings and paratroops operations to seize key locations. The consolidation phase would then expand Indonesian control over the whole of Western New Guinea.

The Indonesian Air Force began to fly attack missions in the area from bases on surrounding islands. Meanwhile amphibious raids by the Indonesian Navy and Marines were intensified.

By the summer of 1962, the Indonesian military had begun planning a large-scale amphibious and air assault against Biak, the Netherlands' main power base in West Irian. This operation would have been known as Operation Jayawijaya ("Victory over colonialism") and would have included a substantial task force of 60 ships including several which had been supplied by Sukarno's Soviet and Eastern Bloc allies, including the heavy cruiser KRI Irian (ex-Ordzhonikidze) along with 16,000 soldiers and Marines. This force was to be commanded by General Suharto (the future president).

To strengthen their hand, Indonesia purchased 26 Soviet Tupolev Tu-16 'Badger' heavy bombers along with a number of KS-1 'Kennel' Anti Ship missiles . These were ordered to sink any Dutch naval vessels trying to resist the planned invasion, especially the light carrier HMNLS Karel Doorman, with its jet-powered Sea Hawk naval fighters, which was identified as a major threat. The Karel Doorman was at that time docked in Frematle, Australia ready to be deployed.

On 15 August 1962, the Netherlands, unwilling and unable to wage a protracted war on the other side of the world, agreed to meet Indonesian officials. They later signed the New York Agreement in which the Netherlands ceded the territory of West Irian to a UN administrative state, with a view of later integration with Indonesia. Due to this agreement, Operation Jayawijaya was called off. Indonesia occupied West Irian in 1963 and renamed in 'Irian Jaya'.

Tu-16 in my hometown Jogja, in an aviation museum. Two KS-1 Komet missiles can be seen on both wings. There are also MiG-21, MiG-19 and dozens of other vintage military aircrafts in the museum.

Rub this giant many times during my multiple visits, gives me a tingling sensation each time I do that. wub.gif

Today I Learned: The Russian 9M113 Konkurs (AT-5 Spandrel) ATGM has an MCLOS backup guidance system

Hmm... Interesting. hmm.gif

Any known western ATGM has this feature?

Don't know....but if Saddam sell all his T-55 and T-72 tanks...trade them with Konkurs in 2003 war. There will be fireworks, with lots of Abrams, Bradleys and Humvees exploding.

tanks become less relevant these days....thanks to Hizbullah

They've been saying that since 1945... still relevant.

Hezbollah has overblown its claims since 2006. In reality only a few Merkavas were damaged by the ATGMs, mainly by side/rear aspects which are known weaknesses anyway. The Israelis are quite satisfied with their performance.

Neither Bradley nor Humvee are intended to go up against ATGMs, but I'm sure the Abrams would have stood up excellently. Konkurs has slightly less penetration than Kornet IINM.
Western ATGM gave up on MCLOS already lol... so 1st gen. Partly it is economy - how many pounds does it add to the ATGM weight for what kind of performance? (MCLOS already shown to be highly inaccurate for the range and speed of ATGMs.)

IINM either the European HOT or UK Swingfire were the last Western ATGMs to have MCLOS backup guidance.
*
Regardless of whether it's overblown or not....The Hizbullah-Israeli 2006 war has started a new trend. I know Abrams can withstand Konkurs on front armor, but mobility kill can still be achieved. Syrian and Yemen conflicts have shown that tanks have become less relevant, I'm not saying that it's completely irrelevant.

Imagine that if in the Battle of Karbala Gap, muricans need to face hundreds of nearly invisible, camouflaged ATGM nests, just what's employed in Syria. The Medina division might as well be disbanded before the war, it's a mere nuisance for US Army.

Ship class is designated by its role, not its size or weight.

A cruiser is designed to be more or less an independent warship with a well-balanced suit of weapons to go on long-range cruises for distant commerce raiding and reconnaissance, hence, a 'cruiser'.

A destroyer is a vessel for defensive escort duties, designed originally to destroy small torpedo boats that target heavier warships like carriers or battleships, hence 'destroyer'.
*
This sounds like WW2 definition, Ticonderoga class is currently used primarily for defensive escort duty, the same applies with Pyotr Veliky battlecruiser. It started with USS Long Beach that was dedicated to escort USS Enterprise....the "nuclear taskforce"

It's justified if Arleigh Burke crews fear a SSN. The subs can hide under the thermal layer and get rigged for silent running. In the meantime, surface ship is noisy, due to its propeller, wake and active sonar. With wire guided still attached, sub operator may order the torpedo to ignore any countermeasure and decoy, keeping it straight to the target, maintaining homing status with the torp's onboard active sonar

It's not even a TNI-AL ship....but just a TNI-AD's LCU. Soon, TNI-AD will get two bigger landing ships. This dispels the myth that Indonesia doesn't have the capability of transporting Leopard 2 to remote islands

We call it doppering....all infantry units from AD, AL and AU, both regulars and elites undergo this. The instructors complete special training to perform this. 330th infantry battalion has dual qualification of being raider and paratroopers.
