If at any time Malaysia is under threat, I think it would be in Malaysia's interest to secure the straits. The straits do face the most important administrative, industrial and commercial parts of Malaysia. If Malaysia doesn't secure it by whatever means, who will? Wait for some enemy amphibious force to land in Morib?

QUOTE(mcnoodle @ Nov 2 2016, 12:20 PM) Someone earlier posted that Msia no need ally with anyone, so if trouble starts then why should others bother? Ally or not, the straits represent the main shipping route between east and west. If the straits were to be closed or blockaded, a lot of countries will be affected. QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Nov 2 2016, 12:35 PM) And that is why we should find an ally, because in case of anything we may well find ourselves not only being the pelanduk between the gajahs, but also no one willing to be our allies for fear of offending the gajahs I'm not a big fan of the concept of 'alliances'. You're basically like a group of mountain climbers each tied with a rope to the next member. If someone is stupid/incompetent enough to fall, he'll drag the entire group down the cliff. You should have friends, but never have allies. This post has been edited by MilitaryMadness: Nov 2 2016, 12:47 PM

QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Nov 2 2016, 12:49 PM) True, that is how WW1 started after all. However, when you are the weakest one in the group (we probably would be) than it can only ever be in your favour Either way, have to be careful, allies can easily turn into vassals.

QUOTE(Fat & Fluffy @ Nov 2 2016, 01:29 PM) carpet nuclear bomb to form kra canal or pay toll via indon waters Main problem is Indon waters at Sunda straits are shallower and can't support the passage of the largest ships. If someone wants to bypass the Malacca straits, have to go as far as the Lombok straits.

QUOTE(atreyuangel @ Nov 2 2016, 01:38 PM) what hantu jepun.. if by rights all hantu here would be Tall, Caucasian and speak with Australian accent. To many of them lost their lives defending Malaya from Japan when the brits run to regroup in Singapore True, Japanese forces sustained relatively light casualties at the time. Wiki says they have less than 10,000 killed while commonwealth forces had 10x that number killed.

People say the 2007 UN peacekeeping operation in East Timor went very well because the participants are all FPDA members (Australia, Malaysia and NZ) and are familiar with each other's procedures and methods. So no misunderstanding of SOP and military cultures happened.

QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Nov 6 2016, 09:49 PM) Kornet is the best Russian ATGM so I'm not surprised if new production cost is that high* Not sure I believe that infographic, Spike shouldn't be that expensive... it is reputed to be one of the cheapest ATGMs around for its performance. *The problem with reported prices of ATGMs is that the idiot journalists tend to ask only for a single price tag and don't separate the prices of the launch unit and the missile itself A usually quoted price tag for a modern TOW system is $1 million USD for a launcher unit and 10 missiles.

QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Nov 6 2016, 10:25 PM) And Kornet is known to be about the most expensive Russian ATGM, which is why they continued to develop Metis-M. Among infantry-operated ATGM, perhaps. Vehicle-launched missiles are usually far more expensive.

QUOTE(Frozen_Sun @ Nov 6 2016, 10:41 PM) Leopard 2RI were brought using army's LCU 1200DWT to Natuna....so these two 1500 DWT LCUs will be more than capable. Why deploy heavy tanks to distant islands in the middle of the sea? Unless the TNI expects China deploy Marines to land and try take over the island (which isn't the smart thing to do, thus China wouldn't probably try it) this isn't very efficient/useful. A naval/air attack/naval blockade on the islands would be more expected.

QUOTE(Fat & Fluffy @ Nov 6 2016, 10:52 PM) dun get it... just a show of force... natuna being an island will be subjected to naval guns n strikes if prc were to invade, doubt they would send in tanks Haha this is not big gun battleship era anymore la. I doubt 76mm naval guns (1 per ship) will do that much damage. I'm more concerned that if PLAN threaten Natuna any significant TNI-AL reinforcement would practically be forced to pass through the SCS area between Singapore and Sarawak to get there. The area is relatively narrow and it's seems easy to get ambushed there. This post has been edited by MilitaryMadness: Nov 6 2016, 11:03 PM

I kinda half-expected shipbuilders worldwide send their best men to Malaysia to try and get a deal after RMN said they are overhauling the entire fleet. Why is this not yet happened?
