When driving a manual car, must we shift gear accordingly? Like from 1 > 2 > 3 >4>5 ??

I have a habit of changing gear as i like for example from 2 i change to 5, hope this wont do any damage icon_question.gif

IMHO, gears are lined up with specific ratio made for the car so yes you are suppose to change from 1>2>3>4>5.

changing from 2>5....hmm.....unless you have enough power and torque.....but that is rather impossible right.....

My car can, but you need to control clutch. I'm driving an Atos by the way. Oh yea of course not start from immediate stop. If I start with 2nd gear, usually I let the car roll a bit then only enter gear and accelerate.

Gear 2 can move the car from static, sometimes Im too lazy to change the gear I move from 3rd gear, with a bit slope to help

Added on January 28, 2007, 10:48 amsometimes i reach 40kmh at gear2, den changed to gear5 for a smooth cruise. My gear 1 and 2 now hard to shift into already, i wonder if this is the cause. Too lazy to changed gear after got used to auto transmission rclxub.gif

unless u wanna shorten the lifespan of ur engine then keep doing tat. by jumping gears ur 'underpowering' the engine, forcing it to move lower than its normal capability. theres a reason y cars r designed with gear ratios

yes,ur car very powerful de flex.gif
hehe..

yeah,
i do it in sequence..
but sometimes in traffic jams,i start from 2,not 1,just to move a bit
(lower rpm = lower fc,i think tongue.gif )

If you're that lazy, might as well drive a auto. yawn.gif

I do NOT jump the sequence when accelerating but i do jump the sequence when decelerating, especially from a high speed.

I do it in sequence. 1-2-3-4-5. But sometime may drop from 5 to 3 or 3 to 1 if the bugger in front brake hard.
Erm, my kelisa is quite sluggish in 4th gear.
Any kelisa user face the same problem here?
I need to drag my 3rd gear over 3k rpm if i want to have a smooth acceleration in my 4th gear. Pretty weird.
I can shift at 2.5k-2.8k rpm from a lower gear to another. But 4th gear is really annoying.
Haha, my old man like to skip 4th gear, Shfiting 3 to 5. But i can't give too much comment.
Later he Fxxx me that I shouldn't comment on his driving skill as he is way experienced than me. (in chinese: He eat salt more than I eat rice)

y u all think only acceleration? actually it;s more than that..

like u high rev second gear till 50km/h, u can change to fifth gear for cruising....not necessary to change to other gears rite? drive with smart......

what makes you think it will damage the engine n gearbox..
every gear is independent with different ratio.

Skipping gear from lower to higher wont do any damage.. provided ur engine has enuf torque to handle it.
Its different when downshifting.. too much speed for the gearbox to handle.. and tear and wear to the clutch if the engine speed is not syncro to the engine speed when the clutch is being release. biggrin.gif

juz my 2 cents
