I was considering Mazda3 new car last year but right when I open and saw the leg room at the back I'll not pick this car.
It's because I have a kid and I feel pity to the back passengers to sit in such cramp space.
So really if a family car, Civic is the better choice.
For fun drive Mazda3.
You can't have best of both.
Front passenger seats in Mazda can be push back very far to the rear (at least in Mazda 2 vs. Honda City), hence creating an illusion that rear leg space is almost non-existence. I tried Honda City and the front seat push back is much shorter compared to Mazda 2. I always push back further while driving alone or with front passengers (very laid back style driving), but readjust when there are rear passengers. It's because I have a kid and I feel pity to the back passengers to sit in such cramp space.
