Hi Mr Farmer,
I've actually started planting berangan some 2 years+ back. I bought about 30+ seedlings from those guys in Tambunan but unfortunately stop doing my farm after my 2nd child came out and I still wonder if i bought the right banana (those bananas ripe green) I started again with palm oil in kudat (small scale). But now nothing to do since it's harvesting time there. Can't find a soul to open up new area. lol btw, my farm is in Penampang. just about an acre for me to excercise. Now started clearing and planting ginger. Gonna do inter-cropping in Kudat as well in between young palm and rubber tree.... ginger also.. hopefully some of you guys can share a thing or two about planting ginger. i'm planting normal ginger and also the red ginger which i never know it existed until my mother bought some to be planted This post has been edited by poks: Feb 26 2013, 07:50 AM |

Well, that's a good lesson for us.
anyway, if you manage to get the actual cavendish sucker do share.. my interest is still in. as for the inter cropping, the palm and rubber trees are still young (around 9 months - 1 year trees) & going to test ginger after paddy harvesting season is over. i'm at the mercy of cost and the only option for me to clear land is by man power only. yes. kudat is nice. but a lot of undeveloped land due to poverty. all the young guys move to city but never drop their sweat to grow anything on their big family land |

QUOTE(Michael J. @ Mar 15 2013, 02:09 AM) As for Cavendish, yea, lots of process required to market the fella. This variety rarely ever does turn yellow on its own, unless almost rotten. It also doesn't ripe evenly, even after exposure to farnesene or carbide. You will need a cold room to achieve even ripening. But export market is very good. In Australia, they sell for about AUD$3.50 a kg off-peak (roughly RM13.00 here). Will do an experiment on my next batch of cavendish. |

Again, thank you Michael. i've been reading and found out that you can actually use apple as ripening agent. will do experiment next as that is the only option atm. btw, this is one of the Cavendish i manage to save after 2 years holiday. not as good as mr Farmer's. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

btw, i appreciate it if anyone can identify this banana. i was debating with my mom on ripening agent for cavendish when she mentioned bout this banana. i went to the place and took some suckers for transplanting in my farm. it is way taller than 'pisang rebus' but the fruit arrangement is as of cavendish's. anyway, it's the tallest banana i've ever saw. my mom said, on a very good tree there are a lot of fruit bunches and the fruit is bigger than the cavendish. she called 'pisang berangan' and it's that tall. for sure it's at least 12 feet or more high. hope someone can give some idea to this poor farmer » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(Michael J. @ Mar 29 2013, 08:51 AM) A very good Good Friday to all. i've been reading a lot about this banana.. hopefully it is gros michel.poks: This may interest some to know: One of the most popular variety of Gros Michel actually originated from Malaysia. This was the primary eating variety around the world, till Panama Disease wiped out large-scale planting in the early 20th century. The modern Cavendish varieties were then used to replace the Gros Michel. If indeed this is a Gros Michel, then you are one lucky fella, poks. A lot of people are looking for this banana variety: From what others said, the banana fruit sure match of those gros michel but i have not seen one. tommorow i'll be going to hunt another place where they said such banana exist (just beside my kampung) and hopefully will find a better brunch. btw, any other method to ripen cavendish naturally/for small scale production? tq |

MJ:
Thanks. Banana is my first successful plant. The only thing is that i have cavendish in large amount of +- 30 trees which i can't sell yellow. Have to do some experiment on ripening. As for the others, they are just normal except for the recent tall banana and red banana. looking to propagate them I'm still looking for more variety as collection. btw, found some interesting ways to propagate; 1. http://www.ina.or.id/knoma-hpsp/fruit/HPSP...nana-Manual.pdf 2. http://www.cialca.org/files/files/extensio...ion_english.pdf 3. http://www.apcoab.org/uploads/files/1298295339pub_banana.pdf Mr Farmer, i actually never seen people sell this reds in big quantity. might be a chance to open up the market This post has been edited by poks: Apr 2 2013, 08:57 AM |

QUOTE(ParaOpticaL @ Apr 2 2013, 09:17 AM) the similar effect can noticed from the banana trees. out of my 400 banana trees i have less than 5 trees that toppled with this method in my farm. Btw, have you experience any disease outbreak on your bananas? I would like to know any mitigation steps you implement to prevent diseases. to date, i only experienced root borer problems and considering planting marigold as natural agent. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Mr Para & Mr Farmer,
Thanks. I'm practising the same as Mr Farmer. Cut, dissect the affected tree & dig the crom if necessary. currently 2 tree were cut down due to this weevils. now testing to propagate some berangan by crom. hopefully some good result. This post has been edited by poks: Apr 8 2013, 08:06 AM |

Hello Mr Para,
Sabah at the moment is at the end of monsoon season. still raining here & there. expanding my farm this month Btw Para, you mentioned before that your farm housed around 200 cavendish. I'm wondering if you know any person who operate any fruit ripening facility. I'll really like to know the cost of setting up small ripening facility. thanks.. |

Mr Para,
Extension mostly on palm oil. Thinking of expanding banana but not really sure which type to go for since cavendish require ripening. Mr Farmer, hope your wife will be ok soon. |

Good to hear that Mr Farmer.
Yes, Berangan & Saba is a good combination. I'm thinking of the same thing. Will be looking on that option while waiting for my other banana to propagate. |

QUOTE(MrFarmer @ Jun 26 2013, 12:21 PM) Visited my farm for a 5 days last week. Farm is in a mess, grass over grown, weather drying up the land. Plants dying........ it's time to switch to new fruit Shall be going back to work on the farm early July. Luckily my guys harvested the pumpkins. The remainder I guess shall not perform as it's drying up due to the weather. As the Papaya is getting smaller.. i can only leave my farm unattended maximum 2 weeks, by that time all the grass are fat.. transplanting some bananas soon... dry season will be a good time. p/s: can put more pictures on the next edition? Btw mr Para, do your banana have been infected with sigatoga? I have a feeling mine is infected but not severe. Hopefully you can share some fungicide brand. |

Thanks for the info Mr Para,
I did ask around but most agriculture shop (which i'm fond with) doesn't specialized in banana. mostly short term crops. Anyway, they proposed to me to try Hexaconazole 5%... will test it this weekend.. |

Mr Para, update: it seems like mancozeb is still the best fungicide. I've switched from hexaconazole after infected leaves count still high. after 1 week, it seems like things are under control. Hopefully end of this week the infected leaves will drop after 2 application in 8 days interval.
