QUOTE(Prince J @ May 4 2018, 11:46 AM) Hi kyLL We will have a bigger battery for existing / new user to upgrade in June/July 18 but have to sacrifice the 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD space. ONYX's 144Hz IPS upgrade option will be available in June 18. I'm from the UK and will definitely pick one up when they appear here. The UK company PC Specialist offer it here (release is imminent, but not appeared just yet) - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/recoil-ii-15/ - in fact they seem to be the only one's doing it in the UK, but they aren't being as communicative about possible upgrades as you guys. This model - the "Recoil II" - i think is identical to the Onyx (both I think are TongFang GK5CN)...which i'm assuming will mean that i'll also be able to sacrifice the HDD/SSD space for the bigger battery. SO my question is if you know if this mod will be relatively easy to do as a DIY job? And do you know if batteries will have to be TongFang approved or something? It'd be handy to know so that when I buy it I opt out of the HDD in preparation for the new battery. Thanks!

QUOTE(Eiraku @ May 6 2018, 10:22 PM) Woah, hey there man! First I bid you welcome to Lowyat.net, considering how far you travelled from Reddit to here. As for the battery question, I'll tag the resident Illegear reps for you (paging AZIM@ILLEGEAR and Prince J ) so that they can answer your queries for you. But as for a timeframe at least, Prince J has already stated previously that the battery will hit alongside the 144hz screen upgrade, which will be around June-July. Haha Eiraku, thanks! Yes, all the way from Reddit to here, I'm skulking every corner of the iNTerWeBS to learn about the GK5CN before I lay down that cash. The anticipation of getting one is killing me!

QUOTE(Eiraku @ May 6 2018, 10:48 PM) Oh I got your Reddit reply in regards to the "silencer" hack (o-rings on switch stem hack) you posted. Have answered that, but in short, the GK5CN mech keyboard switches are structurally different (we don't use stems), so the hack doesn't apply. BUT, we can use the same principle and try to pad the insides of our caps with something else that fits instead. Maybe vinyl stickers or something. HOWEVER, I'm not sure of how much of the click we'll be able to dampen (because I'm not sure if the source of the click is the mainly the caps hitting the switch, or the switches themselves engaging. I got your Reddit post man, cheers! I wan't sure how the switches were made, but indeed they wouldn't work with those o-rings. You're idea using stickers isn't bad at all though, only way to know is ti try it out =D. I may be doing some lengthy library time over the next few years so the keyboard issue is a hot topic for me! Also, you may know, why is it that the 8850h isn't offered in any of the slimline laptops? It's the same TDP as the 8750h. I know very little about tech things but the only thing that comes to minds is that because the 8750h already runs hot (the Zephyrus GX501 seemed to perform best in Cinebench - perhaps because it has the cooling hinge thing (getting my stats from LTT, for my sins) the 8850h would realistically maybe require better cooling than a slimline could offer..
