Most probably by lying on the sides, it trips the tip-over sensor that prevents the engine from running. It's a safety feature that prevents that stops the engine and by extension stops the rear wheel from spinning; preventing another hazard in advent of an accident. Anyway, good to know that you got off the accident without any serious injuries...
