Hi all,

I am trying understand the common specifications for amplifier and speaker.
Here is the problem, i have a old 4ch amplifier and a Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer but not sure if it can be hook it up.
Understand that manufacturer often claim a higher peak wattage but in fact it misleading.

Sub-woofer specification:
400w RMS/Nominal
800w Peak/Max
4 ohm

Amplifier specification:
1200x4 watt (Printed on the amp)

* Due to the amp was not an well known brand, tried to search on the web but could not find the complete specification.

So here is my questions:
1. The sub-woofer 400w RMS refer to each coil or both coil?
2. Will it damage my DVC if i just connect one of it?
3. Amp 1200x4 Watt mean each channel will support 1200? or divided to 4ch with 300 peak each ch?
4. How can i get the RMS specification for my amplifier? e.g. using multi-meter?

Hope some1 able to enlighten me...

Hi bro, here is my opinion, hopefully its not wrong biggrin.gif

1. 400w rms is total nominal power from the sub, combining both vc..

2. it will damage the amp because of insufficient power.. ideal power output from amp will be 70 to 150 % rms .. so you an calculate how much power ur sub needed..

3.1200 watts is pure lie as no cap ayam amp will have such power.. and for rms, i dont think so it will be even 300watts..

4. Always check the rms, not peak power.. you can do dyno test to find out the rms for each channel but imho, you can buy any reputable brand amp as it will have the specification..

for more info, you can check this link bro

Thank a lot for your replies, but i have further questions if you dn mind biggrin.gif

1. So mean each VC will need at least 200w RMS?

2. Understood that it will damage my amp but what if i have an amp only sufficient power for one VC, can i just temporary use one VC first till i survey for another amp? Will it damage the Subwoofer?

3. That what i think too, let say it just manage to push 10% from 1200w which is 120 watt. So can i say that "1200x4 watt" mean 120w RMS on each channel?

4. Will do, let see i have enough tool for the dyno test. If possible I try not to throw this amp, perhaps hook it up with the rear speaker instead.

Lastly thank for the link, it provide lot of info which it quite useful.

2. Understood that it will damage my amp but what if i have an amp only sufficient power for one VC, can i just temporary use one VC first till i survey for another amp? Will it damage the Subwoofer?  you can use but its not good for the sub, it might damaged the coil because its designed to use both coil, unless its a single coil sub[/COLOR]

3. That what i think too, let say it just manage to push 10% from 1200w which is 120 watt. So can i say that "1200x4 watt" mean 120w RMS on each channel?  usually total rms will be divided to each channel.. so if 120 rms mean each channel will have 30 rms watt..

4. Will do, let see i have enough tool for the dyno test. If possible I try not to throw this amp, perhaps hook it up with the rear speaker instead.  yes definitely.. in general, 4ch amp doesnt have much power compared to 2 ch and mono bro.. thats why most plp use 4 ch for speakers.. some will use 2 ch to get more power for high end speakers due to its higher power rating..

Lastly thank for the link, it provide lot of info which it quite useful. yw bro  smile.gif

Better just buy a new monoblock.. Range of price maybe around 1000++

1. Ur sub is powerful which leads you to buy a better amp
2. Make sure your wiring is thick enough 4awg cable is sufficent
3. Make sure your battery ain't old. Nanti Kong oh!

Since yours is a DVC 4 Ohms sub, you can only drive it on 2 Ohms or 8 Ohms.

8 Ohms ain't practical for an car amplifier thus 2 Ohms is your best option. Either you have an amp that can do 2 Ohms bridged or you get a monoblock that does ~500/600W RMS @ 2 Ohms.

Yup, this is my plan this coming weekend, bridged it at 2 Ohms as i remember mine amp support bridge mode and wiring the DVC in parallel mode.

What amp is that?

I know of very few amps that can do 2 Ohms Bridged.... hmm.gif

REVENGE DIGITAL RV-600.4A
I think is a cap ayam amp as i tried searching the spec online but failed.
But i was told n4 it able to. Let see if i can try to check any way to test using multi meter,

Errrr....to be honest I doubt that it can do 2 Ohms Bridged. wink.gif

It's probably a generic designed amp and most of the 4-Channel amps can't do 2 Ohms bridged.

Like I mentioned earlier, very few amps can go down to 2 Ohms once Bridged.

I hope you don't fry up your sub and the amp at the same time by attempting to do it....just my 2.6 billion opinion tongue.gif

hmm, i heard that if each channel able to suppy 4ohms and if it support bridged, it would be 2 ohms.
Perhaps it only applicable for certain amp.

So izit to say that certain amp after bridged will stay at 4ohms?

Perhaps i try to do more search online for the proper method to get the specification justified.
Anyway appreciate on your feedback.

In most 4-Channel amplifiers - each channel can/might go down to 2 Ohms individually BUT once bridged, it can only do 4 Ohms.
