My father thinking of getting a special car he always wanted but could never afford when it was new. One is a 2008 BMW X5 (3000cc) and the other is Mercedes CLS (3500cc) 2008 model. His daily car for work is a Toyota Prius which is 6 years old. No way would he consider VW because of their problems. Which is a better choice: The Mercedes CLS350 or BMW X5?

If your father has a driver the Merz will be better. If your father going to drive then BMW is better.

use the existing daily car for weekend is the best!
1) no need to worry about used car, faulty part like auto tranny or engine can burn a real big hole in ur bank a/c
2) do u know roadtax 3000cc how much? save it , insurance also save it
3) no parking space issue

don't believe the above! then try get either one. either one is good. Remember to Come back to this thread when u got either one.

I know everyone has a different definition of a weekend car, but those two listed are more like daily driver in the sense that both are actually very practical cars on a day to day basis.

it makes more sense to get something less common, for example an SLK coupe right? weekend cars are meant to be impractical and has a sense of occasion. the X5 and CLS are way too common.

noidea why any of the 2 are even considered 'weekend cars' but between the 2 and only this 2, i just like the CLS350 better

Practical daily drive cars can also be weekend cars. The purpose of not using for your daily commute is to reduce fuel and maintenance cost.

a case of "your mileage might vary" but I still stand by the view that a weekend car has to have a sense of occasion. besides, if the fuel and maintenance cost is so much of an issue that to force the car to become a weekend special, then i guess it is not very practical for the person involved to begin with.

You have a very unique theory of owning a car! Reduce fuel?

To me X5. cause you gonna drive if for weekend with family and maybe a trip. A bigger spacious car will be a better choice.
UNLESS your dad is fancy with those sporty thing then CLS.

X5. He already use normal car everyday. Using X5 feel bit diferent.. I also use 3 type of car. Small one, 4x4 & 320i. Those give different feel when u ride...

Prius and CLS both roomy and comfy. Both are not fast either. Maybe your dad can a take look at much more different car category as for weekend car
