A 50mm lens is most ideal for potraiture, low light indoor photography where focal length is a lil' bit of a problem but dun have a budget for more expensive lenses. I call that lens a 'beginner's DOF practice lens'. Go get one and play with it for awhile by all means, it's fun

Perhaps u can consider getting the 50mm f1.8, it's a fast prime lens and cheap... If you have the moolah, then by all means go for the f1.4...

Wide angle? perhaps 35mm?

50mm f1.8 is fast if lighting is ok ,when lighting is dark ,with USM focusing is nicer I would say, the only reason I buy Canon 50mm F1.8 ,because its RM290 only and got F1.8 , maybe u should consider 50mm F1.4 USM or 85mm F1.8 USM  if got extra budget

For protection, get only a UV Filter, any brand will do.

lol , UV work fine with me , its cheap and its well protect my lens lah

i also stop using my uv/mc filters. too much hassle. i do suggest u invest in cpl/nd/graduated nds

CPL will decrease the light hitting the sensor if I not mistaken ,so its not a good idea if u mount in on at low light condition ,if u unmount it during low light condition meants when in low light ur lens is not protected.
I believe UV filter still a all rounded protection for lens ,CPL is good if I wanna shoot scenary .
But off coz bc I am rough type of ppl , to avoid unhappyness I buy UV filter to protect ,if ur r very careful type ppl then filter is not needed

Filter price is depend on ur lens filter size as well , Hoya UV Filter 67mm is around RM45 .

Another 2 shops quoted 400D kitset Rm3300 but 350D still RM3100

One of the shop fella said 350D might phase outsoon that's why so cheap.

Now i really think 350D since price is RM800 different...i am keep thinking that 2 extra MP, Antidust, 0.7" bigger LCD worth Rm800 or not...later if 450D come out 400D will end up like 350D one day...like that i better save the $$ for upgrade lens in future, right my friend??
