Normally. asian made products i.e. china taiwan etc are more expensive in europe. I saw that a couple of years ago in spain.
I guess the rational is the extra transport cost exporting that item there. I assume uk would be the same. try looking for other camera models or other electronic products and compare. Even the handphohnes are more expensive there.
Hope this helps.

People are dslr enthusiast. You have to start from somewhere, right?
clivengu: you should go to basic. propably u saw nice pictures taken using dslr and you want to do it yourself. but hey, what good is a car if the driver is lawyah.
try and learn the basics. Exposure rate, aperture, focal length, ISO rating etc etc. Try to compare with different settings. I do agree very much you need to have a dslr to know and master these settings. However you just go for the kit lense bcos its cheaper. up until u get the hang of it, then you want to buy an L IS USM lense would be fine.
I wish you all the best in your journey

Coorectme if im wrong. Canon Lenses has a few terminology;
1. IS - Optically Stabilised. Means the optics inside your lense moves as u/ur camera vibrates.
2. USM - Ultra Sonic Motor. Means it has autofocus using ulta sonic motor inside ur lense.
3. IS USM - has both
4. No IS No USM - Normally u will need to use a tripod to make the image "stable". Focusing is done manually.
no 4 is cheap. no 1 n 2 is expensive. no 3 is like getting a lense at a price of 1 or 2 camera bodies.
Official Canon price EOS 40D kit II (EF S17-85 IS USM)-MYR 6699.00 Try and look around. u should find better deal.
For dark areas and indoor (without flash or limited flash range) shooting ; bigger aperture = smaller F number (eq. f/1.8) is more suitable. As the bigger the aperture (the smaller the f number), the more light is permited onto ur sensor.
I do agree if you get at least one prime lense with small f number. the f1.8 50mm is at a nice price. if u can afford go for f1.4 50mm usm.
I suggest you wait for Canon Expo. Its just round the corner. 24-25 october 07 in KLCC. Maybe there you can ask the Canon representative for a test drive.
