QUOTE(linkinstreet @ Feb 25 2007, 01:25 AM) BMW reaffirmed their early season pace with Nick Heidfeld at the summit of the timesheets in testing at Bahrain. sauber are in the wc pace?omg cant wait for the first raceThe German was nearly eight tenths of a second ahead of his closest rival Fernando Alonso at the Sakhir circuit on Friday. Heidfeld set the fastest time on Friday morning during qualifying simulation. BMW team-mate Robert Kubica was fifth fastest with both drivers completing full race simulations in the afternoon. "Today was a good day we did a race simulation which went problem free which was very satisfying for us as last time we had some technical problems in the winter runs but today went well and the speeds seemed good," said Heidfeld. "We have three more days of testing here, one tomorrow then two days off and two more days after that. It is the most important test for us and for many I'm sure as it's the last big test before the start of the season. "I'm really excited about the start of the season, it is very special to me the first race and also I enjoy Melbourne and at the moment the car is looking good." McLaren new-boy Lewis Hamilton focused on longer runs to set the MP4-22 up for the Australian Grand Prix. The Brit was fourth fastest. Jenson Button split the two McLaren drivers and was third fastest during an encouraging day for the Honda team. Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was quickest on Thursday and the Brazilian managed the eighth quickest time on Friday. Kimi Raikkonen was sixth. The Scuderia outfit were concentrating on electronic development and both drivers completed 70 laps. The Renault pair of test-driver Nelson Piquet Jr and Heikki Kovalainen completed endurance tests over race distances and worked on general set-up and tyres. They were seventh and tenth respectively. Bahrain day three - McLaren take charge
QUOTE McLaren finished one-two in Sakhir on Saturday as the first leg of Bahrain testing drew to close. World champion Fernando Alonso led the way, but rookie team mate Lewis Hamilton was just a tenth of a second behind. Seven-tenths down on Hamilton were the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, the Scuderia team mates also closely matched. Heikki Kovalainen made the top five for Renault, just ahead of the Hondas of Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button, with David Coulthard next up in eighth after an encouraging outing in the Red Bull RB3. Friday leader Nick Heidfeld dropped down the order after an unscheduled engine change on his BMW Sauber, while at Toro Rosso Scott Speed got his first taste of the new STR2 machine as he awaits final confirmation of his 2007 race seat with the team. Despite several drivers experiencing technical problems, it was a generally productive session, with everyone managing at least 50 laps and six men (Raikkonen, Barrichello, Nelson Piquet Jr, Anthony Davidson, Franck Montagny and Jarno Trulli) completing a century or more. Testing resumes in Bahrain next Tuesday. Unofficial Saturday times from Bahrain: 1. Fernando Alonso, McLaren, 1:30.994 2. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 1:31.094 3. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:31.718 4. Ferrari retained their grip on the Sakhir timesheets on Wednesday as Felipe Massa again set the pace in testing. The Brazilian's time of 1m 30.640s put him half a second clear of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
Massa's team mate Kimi Raikkonen made it two Ferraris in the top three, after he scored the third fastest time of the day. While Raikkonen completed 94 laps in the unmodified version of the F2007, it was left to Massa to take charge of the team's new aerodynamic package. The Brazilian covered 100 laps in total. Both will continue testing duties on Thursday. Second-placed Hamilton was joined on track by McLaren tester Pedro de la Rosa, who clocked the fifth-quickest time, just behind the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella, who focused on handling work, as well as set-up and tyre testing. The Italian's team mate Heikki Kovalainen was sixth. The Finn had to wait until the afternoon for his car to be made track worthy following Tuesday's accident. He covered 29 laps in total, following the obligatory systems checks. "I was pleased to be able to get back out on track this afternoon," explained Kovalainen. "The mechanics have done a fantastic job to repair the car so quickly, and a big thank you to the team for their efforts. It was important to run again today, and I was focused on getting the jobs done we needed to, to minimise the amount of lost time. We got some interesting results this afternoon." Nick Heidfeld was the quickest BMW Sauber in seventh, while team mate Robert Kubica took the second F1.07 to tenth. Although Kubica's running was interrupted by a hydraulic leak in the morning, the pair covered just over 120 laps between them. Both will test again on Thursday, completing the team's final systems checks ahead of next month's Melbourne race. Jenson Button was the eighth-fastest runner for Honda, while Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello finished in 11th slot - just two-thousandths of a second shy of Kubica's time. The most impressive performance of the day, however, was arguably that of Vitantonio Liuzzi, who took the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso to ninth place, comfortably ahead of Red Bull stable mates David Coulthard and Mark Webber, who finished 14th and 15th respectively. With Super Aguri's Takuma Sato finishing 12th, it was left to Toyota team mates Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli to complete the day's line-up in 13th and 16th respectively. Schumacher, who bowed out early from Tuesday's test after suffering back pain, completed 84 laps in the TF107, Trulli 41. While Schumacher reported positive progress, Trulli had a more troubled day, with both gearbox and engine issues costing him track time. "Jarno went through quite a lot of problems and we are not really happy with the reliability record on his car today," confirmed Pascal Vasselon, Toyota's senior general manager (chassis). "Still, despite this lack of running, his programme has been very fruitful. It has been useful in terms of results and they have been interesting." Testing concludes in Bahrain on Thursday. Unofficial Wednesday times from Bahrain: 1. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:30.640 2. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 1:31.178 3. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:31.490 4. Giancarlo Fisichella, Renault, 1:31.967 5. Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren, 1:31.971 6. Heikki Kovalainen, Renault, 1:32.068 7. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 1:32.254 8. Jenson Button, Honda, 1:32.293 9. Vitantonio Liuzzi, Toro Rosso, 1:32.359 10. Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber, 1:32.648 11. Rubens Barrichello, Honda, 1:32.650 12. Takuma Sato, Super Aguri, 1:32.837 13. Ralf Schumacher, Toyota, 1:33.054 14. David Coulthard, Red Bull, 1:33.146 15. kovalainen crash for renault
![]() LONDON, England -- Renault rookie Heikki Kovalainen has escaped unhurt after a 200kph crash in Formula One testing in Bahrain. The 25-year-old Finn, who clambered out of the car after smashing heavily into the barriers at the desert circuit, said he had "got caught out" on turn seven during the morning session. "All the safety systems worked perfectly so I am fine, but there is quite a lot of damage to the car and I may not be able to start running again until tomorrow afternoon," Kovalainen said in the team's end of day report. "That will delay our programme, which is frustrating, but the focus now is on working with the team to get the car ready as soon as possible. "We are already in a good position after running for three days last week, but there are still some important preparations to be completed before we get to Melbourne." Bahrain is hosting the final official test before the season kicks off in Australia on March 18. Kovalainen has replaced Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso, who has moved to McLaren, in the Renault line-up alongside Italian Giancarlo Fisichella. Toyota's Ralf Schumacher also sat out the afternoon after bouncing over a kerb and hurting his back. French test driver Franck Montagny stood in but the team expected the German to resume testing on Wednesday. Ferrari set the pace, with Brazilian Felipe Massa and Finland's Kimi Raikkonen both completing race distances. Massa lapped with a best time of 1:31.260, Raikkonen 1:31.590. Alonso was third quickest in 1:31.851. BMW Sauber's Polish driver Robert Kubica was fourth. "There are still some problems that are annoying us so we have to find some compromise between reliability and performance before the start of the season," circuit organisers quoted Kubica as saying. "This test is crucial to us but unfortunately the problems are still there," he added. "We have had these problems for quite a long time so the first lot of grands prixs for us will be difficult." |

Ferrari finish testing as favourites
The last major pre-season test drew to a close in Bahrain on Thursday, with Ferrari once again dominating the timesheets, leaving the Italian team hotly tipped to win the opening race in Australia in just over a fortnight's time. For the third day in a row Felipe Massa was the man to beat, the Brazilian the only driver to dip below the 1m 30s mark around the Sakhir circuit, after clocking a best time of 1m 29.989s. Massa tested in the morning only, running 45 laps in an F2007 fitted with Ferrari's latest aero package. Team mate Kimi Raikkonen continued work on the package in afternoon, the Finn totalling 77 laps as he finished fourth fastest. Splitting the Ferraris were the Renaults of Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella in second and third respectively. Kovalainen covered 61 laps in the R27, as he spent the day fine-tuning set-up for April's Bahrain Grand Prix. Fisichella practised race weekend procedures, but was forced to curtail his running early due to a mechanical problem. World champion Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, finished just shy of Raikkonen in fifth place for McLaren. Alonso was joined by test driver Pedro de la Rosa, who clocked the seventh-fastest time. The pair continued the team's preparatory work for Melbourne, which included aero tests and set-up programmes. Rubens Barrichello completed the top six, while Honda team mate Jenson Button finished down in 14th. By far the busiest man on track was Scott Speed, who put in 125 laps in the Toro Rosso STR2. It was another good outing for the Italian team as they finished the session in eighth place. "Every day, more and more parts have arrived here from the factory, which have helped us to improve reliability and performance," said Laurent Mekies, Toro Rosso's chief engineer. "It really kept our guys busy and they worked very hard. Looking at today's performance especially it is clear we are working in the right direction, even if there is a lot to do." Just eight-hundredths of a second slower than Speed was Red Bull stable mate David Coulthard, while Mark Webber in the second RB3 was 11th. Both Webber and Coulthard completed several long runs, and covered a total of 150 laps. "The test has not been trouble free and a few elements still need fixing, but we have made some progress," commented Christian Horner, Red Bull's team principal. "Next week, we will run at Magny-Cours for two days when, as planned, the RB3 will run with the new aerodynamic package that will be used in the first race in Melbourne." Nick Heidfeld was the quickest BMW Sauber driver in tenth, with Robert Kubica finishing 12th in the second F1.07. The pair wrapped up the team's winter programme, carrying out aero tests and set-up evaluations. "We were able to confirm the cooling system and to test the tyre characteristics in high track temperatures and test the entire car under conditions which will be similar to those we expect for the first three races," explained Willy Rampf, BMW Sauber's technical director. "By being careful to prepare in every detail we hope to be able to show the same reliability in Melbourne as well." Ralf Schumacher and test driver Franck Montagny were both in action for Toyota's final day in Bahrain. While Schumacher set the 13th-fastest time, Montagny ended the session 15th. Completing the Thursday line-up was Super Aguri's Takuma Sato in 16th. Sato covered 53 laps as he focused on aero tests and set-up work for Melbourne in the Japanese team's interim car. The 2007 Super Aguri is set to be launched on March 12. With testing in Bahrain complete, the teams will return to their bases and prepare to depart for Melbourne and the Australian Grand Prix on March 18. Unofficial Thursday times from Bahrain: 1. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:29.989 2. Heikki Kovalainen, Renault, 1:30.384 3. Giancarlo Fisichella, Renault, 1:30.498 4. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:30.534 5. Fernando Alonso, McLaren, 1:30.564 6. Rubens Barrichello, Honda, 1:31.067 7. Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren, 1:31.354 8. Scott Speed, Toro Rosso, 1:31.500 9. David Coulthard, Red Bull, 1:31.589 10. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 1:31.720 11.
